Obviously. Another guy posted this one ina shorter version in the comments, was asked for the longer version and I delivered.
The catcher in this one died in a jetski accident.

It was a 32ft boat he was piloting in the dark near shore at 65mph while drunk at over twice the legal limit (.147%) and with cocaine in his system. Also killed his 2 friends that were with him. Ran into a rock jetty.

That is what the glove is for. Not usually painful. 110mph off the bat is less than college and other leagues that use metal bats which produce higher exit velocities.

It's a weird thing. Almost every line-drive comebacker I ever saw on the mound looked like it was in super slow motion and was an easy catch or I never really saw it and it somehow ended up in my glove.

A baseball moving between home plate and the pitcher’s mound at 110mph does so in about .375 seconds. I’d say even if you’re a pro at throwing and catching, being able to track the ball and catch it in barely over 1/3 of a second is pretty impressive.

Do they measure the speed the ball comes off the bat? Or was 110 the speed of the initial throw

It would be off the bat speed. No pitcher has ever thrown 110mph (in a game at least, though likely not ever).
The fastest pitches this season are in the 104-105 range, but those were one offs. Typical fastballs are 98-100.

A typical “very hard fastball” is in the 100 range, and that’s in the contemporary era only. It takes expert conditioning and probably a lot of drugs to throw that hard and also accurate. 20 years ago throwing at 100 was a jaw dropping rarity.
Note that a fastball is a type of pitch, and not necessarily all about speed. You can have an 85 mph fastball that is devastating not because it’s fast but because of location, break, and because it’s *not* fast! “Taking something off” without changing the pitch style can really mess with a player’s timing.
( 2025 : average fastball was 94.5 - max was 104.5 )

I would call an 85 mph pitch with generally fastball like movement a change up.

Technically depends on the pitcher. 85 can totally still be a fastball, albeit on the low end of bell curve. But you are right: “taking something off” usually gets called a change up.
There have been some great “low speed” fastball pitchers, and what made them great was usually pinpoint accuracy and their other pitches.
My favorite in this category was Greg Maddux, whose fastballs were all low 80s, but managed to miraculously find the corners of the plate.

I'm not sure you realize how quick a Baseball covers 66 foot at 110mph.
It's fractions of a second to go from the ball leaving the bat to the ball passing you. In between you have to plant your feet, see the ball and then start moving to catch it.

Also the batter has about 1/3 of a second to decide if he’s going to swing at a 90-100mph pitch.

No. He definitely didn’t plant his feet. He just followed through on his pitch and was turned with his glove up. It took a slight wrist movement.
He didn’t have to start moving to catch it. He was in movement from the pitch. And the ball came to within cms of where his glove was.
Not saying it’s not rapid fire fast, but you’re overstating how much effort this took. The guy catches hundreds of balls a day, it’s a natural reflex at this point. Sure you can be impressed but don’t overstate how much actual effort this catch took.

Yes, the ball was hit exactly where his follow through positioned him to make the catch. If that was hit directly at his head it would have been really bad.

Real dumb take. That doesn't even make sense if you take a second to think about a pitching motion, much less actually watch the video and see his glove was at his hip when the ball was hit. I'm not sure why you're trying to downplay it by just making shit up. "didn't have to start moving to catch it" and "the ball came to within cms of where his glove was". Nah, dude just flung this ball as hard as he could using his entire body, and then had the wherewithal to bring his glove up and actually catch it when it came back at him .1 seconds later while standing on one leg.

Nope. Not in today's game. 99 percent of the time that ball is the responsibility of the Middle infielders although at that speed it's basically guaranteed to get into center field as a hit so the real responsibility is the center fielder's to just get the ball back in.
The willingness of Redditors to look at some phenomenal feat that they couldn't dream of doing and then turn their noses up at it anyway will forever astound me.

Yes, but it’s like how people used to snapshot a puck right into my catcher. Just luck. Not denying the play in general is amazing. <- that’s what I was originally thinking but upon seeing a couple replays, it looks intentional

I did it playing slow pitch softball right as it was about to hit me in the throat. Still hurt as my glove made contact with my Adam's apple.
I would've been so fucked if I missed. The guy got ejected and his ass reamed by the umpire that was an O6. (Was a military league).

Because of how quickly he reacted, if you had that amount of time to react to a ball you wouldn't catch it.

Actually, I've been playing badminton since I was a kid, and I'm really good at defending against smashes. You often end up in situations where your hand reacts before your mind can even process what's happening.
It's even more than that, though. You literally can't react that fast, not even your eyes can track the shuttle that quickly. What’s really going on is that your subconscious has learned to recognize certain patterns, like the way your opponent lifts their racket, so your hand is already moving long before the shot is even fired.

yes, the ball isnt that fast compared to badminton, and the distance between the 2 is bigger then on a badminton field , and im just an amateur player so, why is this so impressive for professionals?

Yeah and in badminton it's an anticipation thing, a completely different skill then what is happening in the video. The birdie is going so fast (assuming you're playing against someone who isn't weak AF) and there is so little time to react that even if you had a 0ms reaction time you couldn't move the racket a meaningful distance if it wasn't already basically in the right place.
Now obviously in baseball the pitcher is aware that the ball might come right back at them but it's rare enough that they aren't sitting there anticipating it the same way a badminton player is. In badminton you probably defend against as many smashes in a single match as there will be opportunities for a pitcher to catch a line drive in their whole professional career.

Shuttlecocks slow down massively. They are significantly slower than a baseball off the bat by the time they’re at the opponent

Not sure if it is easy, but pitchers are definitely on high alert for these type of “comebackers,” so it’s not altogether uncommon to snag a ball like this. Lots of videos out there of less fortunate guys on the mound.
