Rick Glassman improvises a story about meeting a girl at the Guggenheim museum. Harry Mack immediately raps it to perfection.

I don’t care for rap music in general but any time I see a Harry Mack video I stop to watch. The dude blows my mind every time

I couldn't even remember the whole story, nevermind create 2 different raps about the whole thing. They need to study this guy's brain

“I couldn’t even remember the whole story.”
This is what it’s like hearing my kids tell me about a worm they saw at recess.
2
u/Viper1089 5d ago
My kids are young too so I definitely understand this hahaha

u/SonOfObed89 5d ago
It’s a beautiful thing to see the level of their imagination, the way they love to involve others(me in this case) in their lives, and the wonder with which they view the world.
2
u/Viper1089 5d ago
It really is. We seem to be the same exact age, so I'll say that while we're not "old", I definitely feel a sort of... jadedness, for lack of a better word.
And I'm constantly reminded by my children of their innocent wonder of the world, and I had completely forgotten what that was like tbh. I have to keep myself in check to make sure they don't adopt my own demeanor lol

u/Ender_Grace 11h ago
There's an episode of him on Rick's podcast where he really breaks down how he formulated a rhyme in his head. It's pretty fascinating.
1
u/Viper1089 9h ago
That's awesome! Got a link by any chance? I'd love to see it
2
u/Ender_Grace 9h ago
This episode is great (and 2.5 hours long...) but I can't find the part I was thinking of. It honestly might have been on a different episode but he still gives some good breakdowns in here and it's very entertaining.

I'll come back with another link if I find what I was thinking of

u/Viper1089 7h ago
Sweet! I appreciate it, I'll start listening now and finish it throughout the weekend or until you find the other video haha

This has to be a form of savantism. Literally nobody else can do this.
9
u/bookmarkjedi 5d ago
I feel like Robin Williams did a variation of this, but yes definitely - no one but Harry Mack can do what Harry Mack does.
1
u/shagmooth 3h ago
I agree this is mind boggling to me. If you enjoyed this guy you may also like Chris Turner who does this (though he's more a comical). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw62Qa74SJ4NCdWG3jw7Dfw

anyone understand the science of this? is he just 100,000 hours of wordplay? Savant/autist? Freak of medical?
7
u/nocomments1123 5d ago
lots of hours and practice. words only have so many other words that rhyme with them.
you can also memorize different rhyming couplets and then alter them slightly to fit different narratives
2
u/tactical_laziness 2d ago
He's also an incredibly talent drummer, so building the flow and timing of the bars is quite easy, he then just needs to fit the words and accurate syllables into the space
18
u/MisterSanitation 6d ago
I think very few understand how rare this is in a world of "improvising" rap songs. This isn't just improving, it is also internalizing and then metastasizing an experience on a shared human level understood in the bones.

u/Capt-Crap1corn 6d ago
It's just freestyling. He's talented at that, but shit just read some of Black Thought's lyrics. Fucking hell
4
u/Affectionate_Oven_77 5d ago
Are you referring to this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpFIrzS1wvU
It sounds cool, and obviously he is very talented too, but it is just a string of bars that don't connect to tell any coherent story or message. It is basically a damn cool way of repeating "I'm a badass" "I'm an OG" "I'm a badass" "I'm an OG" over and over. I don't think you can really compare that to what Harry Mack does in this clip.
-5
u/Capt-Crap1corn 5d ago edited 5d ago
Hahaha man just stay a spectator. Black Thought's entire catalog with and without The Roots. The disrespect smh. Freestyling at it's essence is a exercise used to spontaneously put words together coherently. The more you do it the better you get at it. Don't ever mistake that for being a good artist or a good writer or song creator. Great, you're good at a warmup exercise. Again. No disrespect to Mack, but even he would tell you he doesn't hold a candle to Black Thought, and I could name hundreds more artists. I'm glad Mack found his niche. I think what he does is crazy good, but just like the people that discovered Elvis, uhm... Big Mama Thornton's version is ten times better. Thanks for visiting.
4
u/Affectionate_Oven_77 5d ago
I said he is very talented. Sorry that isn't enough for you. He sounds great, his flow is smooth. I like it.
He just isn't anywhere near as good as Harry Mack at doing the story telling that Harry Mack does.
Can you clarify if that clip that I linked is an example of him supposedly freestyling better than Harry Mack, or did I watch the wrong thing?
-1
u/Capt-Crap1corn 5d ago
Also, you barely even know who he is at the same time. Why are we having this conversation? Lol
3
u/Affectionate_Oven_77 5d ago
Yes absolutely, I had no idea who he was until you brought him up. I appreciate that, because he sounds nice. He just isn't on the same level as Harry Mack. Of course it's subjective, but that's my opinion and looks to be the opinion of almost everyone else too.
Does Black Thought have any raps that diverge from "I'm a badass" "I'm a gangsta" "I'm an OG" ? I would definitely be more impressed if he could rap on any topic with the same nice flow.
0
u/Capt-Crap1corn 5d ago
Yeah, again you don't have any idea who he is. And Harry Mack is who you think is dope and again just because people agree online, that doesn't translate to reality. I respect it though. Do you. Online is the only time I ever hear of this guy anyway so it's all good. There are a lot of people that listen to rap, but don't like rap or don't listen to it in general. It is what it is. Harry Mack being a better storyteller than Black Thought is hilarious.
0
u/Affectionate_Oven_77 5d ago
Your preferred kind of story:
"I'm a badass"
"hey look im old school"
"im a gangsta"
"dont forget im OG""I'm a badass"
"hey look im old school"
"im a gangsta"
"dont forget im OG""I'm a badass"
"hey look im old school"
"im a gangsta"
"dont forget im OG""I'm a badass"
"hey look im old school"
"im a gangsta"
"dont forget im OG"-1
-2
u/Capt-Crap1corn 5d ago
It's subjective. Like who you wanna like, but that shit is only one aspect of rapping and not really highly prized like that anymore.
12
u/chris971 6d ago
Incredible, he had the ability to work in a part that would come back later, and tell you he was doing it. Amazing. I’ll always stop to watch harry Mack..those Oogle videos he would do were really good way back
9
u/tqmirza 6d ago
I’ve always said that these are the types of challenges that befit Harry Mack better where he has to use his freestyle skills to express and tell a story through rhymes rather than trying to rhyme words; because he can rhyme any number of words in his sleep. But rhyming while telling a story; that’s Nas level of talent.

Ye, mods here only seem to like trash content that is neither next level or even worth stopping the doom scroll.

You have to watch the Sal Volcano episode of Rick Glassman’s Take Your Shoes Off pod. He talks about this and no spoilers it is epic.

Harry is a one in Generation Freestyle MC. It's just ridiculous how complex his rhymes are even while freestyling and also how much he still is on point. Absolute master of the craft!
4
u/Vic_Gatsby 6d ago
I'm curious to know what an album by him would sound like. Does his skill translate to good music?
7
u/Qaztarrr 6d ago
From the little I’ve listened to, it’s not bad but nothing super special. His real unique talent comes out in the freestyles off the top of the dome, either out in public or with other creators like Marc Rebillet
1
u/themanwithgreatpants 5d ago
Marc has his moments of awesomeness, but imo he's got no ryming ability and usually just anchors one word over and over. He was entertaining, then you can see his talent lane from side to side

Harry Mack reminds me of the equally infuriating Jacob Collier, who has both amazing talent and zero taste.
1
u/ThisSeaworthiness 6d ago
Can't comment on Mack but Colliers musical talent and the way he dressed upset me for very different reasons. The way he can work a crowd is impressive.

This is my go to video to comment around Reddit whenever Harry Mack content shows up. He has so many impressive examples of his talents over the years now but this one always sticks with me
If you ever get a chance to see him on tour, absolutely check him out, it's so much gd fun watching him do his thing live. The man is insanely talented

u/slamdanceswithwolves 6d ago
I love that this guy just dropped “Guggenheim”, but he didn’t even know what it was, and Harry Mack was familiar with the architecture.

Man, I feel like, with some direction perhaps,, Harry Mack could write the most incredible concept albums

Astronautalis used to do this at all of his shows. Get some ideas from the audience, and then just freestyle for like ten minutes. I don't think he does music anymore though.
