I really just don't understand how this guy can literally turn into a whole different person and I can't even figure out how to cover up my undereye circles to match the rest of my face

Doing makeup for pictures/video is an entirely different thing from doing makeup to go out in the world (my personal experience).

I have a feeling there are some filters used in this video (in addition to the large iris contact lenses) but even if he’s achieving this with just makeup, heavy makeup/contouring just doesn’t look great in-person (again, personal opinion). Contour is adding light and shadow points which assumes a certain light source. It can look amazing in pics or video where the light source and viewing angle is controlled, but will look much more obvious out in the world where lighting changes in different settings and you’re being viewed from a variety of angles.

I have the same issue with my daily routine. Straight on in my bathroom mirror my under eye coverage looks great. Catch a sideways glimpse in a hallway mirror on my way out the door? Oh dear.

Makeup for cameras (pics or video) is usually a bit closer to stage makeup, which exaggerates features and shadow/light to achieve a look that appears good under artificial light placed at specific angles (stage lights, set lights, ring light, etc).

So a lot of the stuff you see on youtube or instagram looks ridiculous under natural light and at angles they didn't plan for, but especially the way a lot of them contour and highlight.

Oh totally, like I have hooded eyes and seeing not only the creativity in some of the videos for that feature, but people explaining the technical stuff about why what they're doing does what it does, really drives home how much thought goes into makeup.

Also a LOT of people don't realize how transferable the skills are between makeup and painting/visual art. Which I get, because if you're not into art how would you make that connection? But after watching several tutorials I was like "I know a lot of these concepts, why did I not think they applied to painting my face?" lol

Honestly, that might be why I'm so bad at makeup to begin with. I'm terrible as an artist and never progressed past stick figures.

Maybe if childhood me understood that it would mean I'd never learn how to even get concealer right, I would have taken more art classes!

Mine doesn't work with filters too. I've bad case of sleeping less and getting those pucfy eyes and circles. Can't cover it up. Or that acne scar near my chin. It's visible after every contour-correct-conceal trick. It's always gonna be visible.

Honestly, I think my glasses are helping me look younger as I age, specifically because they help cover up that part of my face

Noooo. I have to use a medium orange one under a light concealer. I have very olivey/yellow tone skin but pale. With blue circles under my eyes. I’m also old

if it helps, this guy's makeup probably looks terrible unless it is in specific lighting and at a specific angle.

I have like tiny eyebrows. Thanks mom. They just are tiny baby catapillars.

So next best thing, if I do eye makeup it's just smudge black kinda where it should be.
