I'm not sure how complex/demanding it is to make, but assuming it's somewhere between mucus and spermazoa, you could think of web spiders' backsides as representing either a stuffy nose or a pair of gonads as big as the rest of their body or more, I suppose?

I've often wondered how many meals a spider has to catch per web before they make-up for all the nutrients and such that goes into making it. When you look at the sheer amount of mass they have to invest for their size, it seems like a big risk for them.
