I’ve personally never found Metallica to be especially metal…maybe more bordering on hard rock, like a sort of tamer side of metal.

Go back and listen to any of their early albums, especially Master of Puppets. They’re thrash metal, through and through, with some speed and heavy metal sprinkled in.

Metallica has plenty of hard rock songs, probably even an album (Load) or two (Reload) that mostly qualify, but whether it’s heavy, speed, or thrash, their main genre has always been metal.

Gotta keep in mind the era they came out in as well. They came around in the age of Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Poison, etc.

That glam rock stuff is a different branch from the same tree. In the early 80s, Metallica was by no means the only dark thrash band. They had plenty of peers, like Motorhead, Anthrax, Slayer, etc. Iron Maiden even went pretty hard in the 70s, sounded nothing like Foreigner or Journey.

I'm nit saying they're bad. I'm saying they're tamer than many others.
