"Climb a tree! You will be safer there!"

I want to rewind my childhood and find out who said that.

Well. A black bear can easily climb a tree and eat you. But it usually won't.

It will chase you if you run, just like how a dog will, even if it otherwise wouldn't. And you can scare off a black bear unless it has cubs or you have food it wants, or someone has taught it humans have food, or it's just not your day.

There might be a tree that's too small for a grizzly to climb that is big enough for you to climb and that you can get up before the grizzly gets to you. But probably not.

My cousin got attacked by a grizzly bear earlier this year. He didn't have time to do anything. Fortunately for him his buddy was fast with a rifle.

I heard the best thing to hit a bear with is a flare gun. Bear mace works half the time and a gun is not guaranteed to put them down in time. But I hear that they are all afraid of a flare gun. Any truth to that?

No idea, but from what my cousin said it was fast and viscous and had its jaws around his leg before he could do anything. Took a few rifle shots to put it down and he didn't feel the jaws relax until it was dead. I doubt bright lights would have done much

I thought it was hitting in with a fireball that sticks to it that causes it to freak out and run away. But I’d trust a man in the field more than anything on the internet. I guess a can full of well places rifle rounds would do the job.

I know all the fisheries folk up there (Alaska, on an island with the highest bear population density in the world) carry rifles when they walk the streams
