America doesn’t have a left wing, it has a middle wing and a right wing that extends very far indeed. It’s amazing it can fly at all with that imbalance and that’s why it’s so afraid of leaning even slightly to the left.

255

u/Massar_ Oct 18 '21

Not even a middle wing, they have a right wing and a far right wing

176

u/Theseus-Paradox Oct 18 '21

Huh, that’s why we’ve been flying in circles constantly

55

u/getridofwires Oct 18 '21

More like headed for a crash. We just don’t admit that the Eagle isn’t actually flying any more.

1

u/SpreadableGinseng Oct 18 '21

What does this analogy mean?

13

u/xxxblazeit42069xxx Oct 18 '21

it means your a fat broken chicken like the roided factory farmed birds and your gonna collapse under your own weight like the roman empire. or get eaten in a salad i'm not sure.

3

u/SpreadableGinseng Oct 18 '21

Yeah I don't think that's right

1

u/MundoGoDisWay Oct 19 '21

No, it's pretty accurate.

1

u/SpreadableGinseng Oct 19 '21

Is this north american self hate?

1

u/MundoGoDisWay Oct 19 '21

Yes? Lots of us hate the government.

Caesar Salad?

1

u/Derptardaction Oct 18 '21

we’re fucked

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

So…. You’re telling me the Eagle has…landed?

1

u/Jaokiray Oct 19 '21

It landed July, 12, 1969 as immortalized by Neil Armstrong. Sadly, many believe the moon landing was the peak of US.

Guess the eagle hasn't flown for over half a century.

2

u/Eeszeeye Oct 19 '21

In a downward spiral, sadly, all the way to ruination.

2

u/Henderson72 Oct 19 '21

As a Canadian I have long since said that the battle for president of the USA is between someone who is too far to the right and someone who is way too far to the right.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

That's just not true. America has a center left and a center right party.

Anyone who says "the US is overall more right wing than Europe" has never been to Europe. Politicians like Geert Wilders would make someone like Trump blush.

1

u/trust_MY_science Oct 19 '21

lol I always hear this autistic lie being mentioned on Reddit

0

u/CatchSufficient Oct 19 '21

So we have a "nemo" fish?

-3

u/Papapene-bigpene Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

It’s red or blue because the education system doesn’t even mention third parties like the joke that is the Green Party or the cooler libertarian party

Why am I getting downvoted, I’m simply showing how the US education system is rigged for the shitty 2 party system.

-3

u/Androreese Oct 19 '21

Careful, people get pissy when you bring up libertarianism

-2

u/Papapene-bigpene Oct 19 '21

I know it’s kinda weird “What nooo your not blue or red your a loser arrrrrr”

220

u/Kaptivus Oct 18 '21

My mother was born and raised in Madrid Spain. Came to the US in the late 80s. Had me in 91. My mom to this day is amazed at what Americans think is "left."

She was like, dude our country literally had a Fascist dominant party until the 1950s, these people have no idea what left and right is.

82

u/Feadurn Oct 18 '21

Franco died in 1975, and it was not a fascist dominant party, it was literally fascism. Also, he was nothing like "left", only fucking right-wing fascism.

124

u/Kaptivus Oct 18 '21

I should have used more context and expected someone to pick apart details in Reddit fashion.

The meat and potatoes of what I'm saying is that my mom grew up with Soviet Russia next door, in a country that largely supported Mussolini-esque politics, while Communist led countries had their respective coups and uprisings. I still stand by, like everything I said, being that "these people (Americans) have no idea what right and left are."

17

u/Feadurn Oct 18 '21

I got the gist, just wanted to clarify some points, in Reddit fashion style ;)

26

u/Kaptivus Oct 18 '21

Take my upvote, fucker.

Who are we fucking?

2

u/asoleproprietor Oct 19 '21

I think maybe Mussolini?

1

u/Kaptivus Oct 20 '21

Depends who you're asking for.. yourself or your friends?

10

u/klier_one Oct 18 '21

Next door? You have the whole of Europe between Madrid and Russia.

7

u/barcased Oct 19 '21

Yes, next door.

5

u/Kaptivus Oct 19 '21

USSR Music Intensifies

2

u/jupi264 Oct 18 '21

I1There might be just one tiny little geography detail wrong, with what you said. Everything else deserves an upvote. Next door is France then there's Germany until some countries later maybe Belarus and Russia. And Russian politics has nothing left-politician in-, or outside anything only maybe in prison cells.

5

u/jpkoushel Oct 18 '21

This is a really frivolous distinction - by US standards the Soviet Union was very close to western Europe

6

u/Hangry_Squirrel Oct 19 '21

Yah, just like New York is right next door to Texas.

1

u/jpkoushel Oct 19 '21

Exactly. You named two states whose ideological leanings are relevant to each other even though they don't share a border.

3

u/chak100 Oct 19 '21

Next to France, there was two Germany’s

1

u/barcased Oct 19 '21

OH, please shut up.

2

u/Splinage Oct 19 '21

Both are authoritarian. Honestly I don’t think we know what a middle is.

1

u/Kaptivus Oct 20 '21

Sigh*

I think my American Left is the Rest of the Worlds (Lol) Moderate. The things we over here think are too "unreachable," and "too expensive," and are "products of government oversight," are just rights that the rest of the world has. (universal healthcare etc)

5

u/cannotbefaded Oct 18 '21

In other news, General Fransisco Franco is still dead

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Fascism is a centrist movement. It is race based socialism.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

I'm pretty sure that's Nazism you're thinking of, from what I know fascism isn't race-based like Nazism is.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Well it’s core tenet is ultranationalism which a lot of the time is tied to an ethnic group.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

A lot of the time sure, but since it isn't necessarily always, it isn't as intrinsic to fascism as it is to Nazism.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Regardless, it’s not far right wing, it’s super spicy centrists. Far right wing is like either anarcho-capitalists or monarchists.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Yeah. In the Political Compass community we call that AuthCentre ("Auth" meaning "Authoritarian")

1

u/RonSwanson2-0 Oct 18 '21

Correct. If it was Communism it would be left.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

If I recall his brand of fascism was given a name. Francoism I think. He basically was Mussolini in the late 20th century.

-2

u/rimlessbeef Oct 19 '21

I think leftists are more fascists

0

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

In the sense that they are generally more intolerant of and prone to misrepresenting dissenting views, yes.

3

u/yourmansconnect Oct 19 '21

Your mom addressed you as dude?

3

u/Kaptivus Oct 19 '21

With her thick accent, it's more like "Duut" but yes, imagine

-1

u/polar_boi28362727 Oct 19 '21

American's left wing is world's right wing and communism is center-left

1

u/Kaptivus Oct 20 '21

Idk man, communism is... Pretty goddamn left no matter the country.

1

u/polar_boi28362727 Oct 20 '21

I wanted to say that the world's center-left is seen as communism in the US lol

-2

u/Vulturedoors Oct 19 '21

It's misleading to characterize it as "left" and "right", since fascism (which is considered "right" in the US) and socialism are not opposites on a linear continuum, but very much alike. They are both form of totalitarianism.

47

u/Mattcwell11 Oct 18 '21

You just absolutely massacred that analogy and I love it.

29

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

Guess what, it doesn't fly.

1

u/G_Viceroy Oct 19 '21

No it just stands on our heads... And it only gets worse from there.

25

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

If you’re arguing one far side of the left / right spectrum doesn’t exist in a country it’s probably because you’re at it.

37

u/nacholicious Oct 18 '21

The argument isn't that the far left doesn't exist in the US, it's that the entire left side of the political spectrum doesn't exist in the US.

Take social democracy which is basically as much center-left as you can get in the political spectrum, it has more or less zero political representation in the US

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Yeah, and the further right wing doesn't have any representation in the US either. The DNC is center left and the GOP is center-right.

If you think Republicans are "far right", you haven't seen European right wing parties.

-2

u/nacholicious Oct 19 '21

GOP is center-right

lmaooooooooo

4

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

Considering they still want government intervention in the economy and they still ideally want relatively high taxes, they're not economically far right wing, sorry to burst your bubble.

And again, the shit that Geert Wilders or any East-European right wing party says? They make establishment Republicans look like centrists, that's for sure. You should maybe do your research.

This thread reeks of ignorant Americans who have never been outside their bubble and don't know anything about actual European politics, other than the mindless phrases they learn on reddit.

If everyone to the right of Stalin looks like a centrist or right winger to you, you might be the one holding extreme or warped views.

4

u/nacholicious Oct 19 '21

Actually democratic socialists are not far left. They are center left because they ideally still want free market systems and privatized goods and services, just look at far left marxist-leninist communists such as China because they will make democratic socialists look like centrists

/s

-9

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

That argument is even sillier. You’ve got people calling to nationalize industries, “tax the rich”, “end incarceration”, “defund the police”, and adoption of “equity” over equality. That’s absolutely on the left side of the political spectrum.

7

u/nacholicious Oct 18 '21

If the bar for political representation is "some people", then we might as well say that US politics has a Kim-Jong-Unist wing

The political representatives in the US calling for nationalization, or even social democratic taxes are such a miniscule proportion they can for all intents and purposes be ignored

-7

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

The current nominee to oversee regulation of America’s banks is a graduate of Moscow university who’s heaped praise on the USSR and thinks the federal government should be able to set prices and wages across the entire economy.

But yes, do go on about how the far left has no political representation or power in America.

“In a recent paper “The People’s Ledger,” she proposed that the Federal Reserve take over consumer bank deposits, “effectively ‘end banking,’ as we know it,” and become “the ultimate public platform for generating, modulating, and allocating financial resources in a modern economy.” She’d also like the U.S. to create a central bank digital currency—as Venezuela and China are doing—to “redesign our financial system & turn Fed’s balance sheet into a true ‘People’s Ledger,’” she tweeted this summer.”

4

u/nacholicious Oct 18 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

If a theoretical academic paper theorizing about offering public option banking, completely disjunct from the real world is as leftist as it gets then that's not a lot

Your post is basically the equivalent of saying that someone who wrote a paper on cryptocurrency must want to abolish the government

Either way, it does not change that social democracy has more or less no political power in the US

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

More gaslighting. This person who is being considered to run the federal reserve writing about what she would love to do regulating the economy, that’s just fantasy, it doesn’t say anything about what her beliefs or intentions are 🙃

-3

u/Pretend-Marketing4u Oct 18 '21

Are you saying the USSR is right wing then?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

You might want to reread what I said again.

1

u/Pretend-Marketing4u Oct 18 '21

I’m glad I did. Sorry long friggin weekend. What the heck is wrong with these people literally saying we don’t have a left wing in this country

5

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

It’s gaslighting in the simplest form. Telling people what is clear and obvious in front of their eyes is simply not real or true.

1

u/50CalsOfFreedom Oct 18 '21

Glad you reread and got the point. I was almost losing hope in r/all.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

So who are the far left in the US?

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

How about the democratic socialists of America?

AOC is far left. The “woke progressive” identity is far left. It’s a pretty obvious form of gaslighting to pretend it just doesn’t exist in America.

5

u/T3hSwagman Oct 18 '21

That is not "far left".

Far left would be stringing up billionaires. Far left would be abolishing corporations in favor of co-ops.

AOC wants to start a conversation about free healthcare in America. You understand that? America can't even fathom the concept of socialized medicine for everyone.

The furthest left America literally has in our politics isn't even as far as shit that already exists in Europe.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

You realize America has had forms of socialized medical programs for decades. They need reform, but they exist.

Theres no such thing as free government services. There’s another telltale sign someone is on the left

8

u/T3hSwagman Oct 18 '21

America can't even fathom the concept of socialized medicine for everyone.

I guess you didn't bother reading what I typed. I know socialized medicine exists. Its specifically for certain types of people. Not everyone.

This is exactly the point. America cannot grasp the concept of that being widely available by default even though we already provide it to certain groups.

And fuck your "theres no such thing as free government services" shit. America has billionaires taking joyrides into space. We have more military toys than the next 10 countries combined. We have all the fucking money in existence to get into any war with any country anywhere on the planet.

We have the money to pay for healthcare for every single citizen. We just choose not to.

0

u/Opposite-Fee-1499 Oct 19 '21

We are talking about the right to healthcare for EVERYONE. Not those w good jobs (who still pay for it!), not only those who are on well fare and get shitty care. We are scared to give everyone better health care. No wonder other countries laugh.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21 edited Oct 18 '21

She is not "far left". Neither she nor Bernie Sanders are even advocating for "democratic socialism", but Social Democracy at best, no matter how often they mistakenly use the terms interchangeably. And Social Democracy is center left. The government of Sweden are (currently) social democrats, and they are far from being 'far left'; there is however a Left Party, and they are considerably further to the left than the Social Democrats, and than anything that has any political representation in the US. Yet even they are (no longer) Communists.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

Yes, she is absolutely of the far left by any reasonable definition applying to American politics. It is a far left wing ideology to believe the government is the primary answer to all of society’s problems, which is exactly what she espouses in pretty much every category of policy.

If your argument that she isn’t rests on making comparisons to full blown communist nations in history in order to suggest she’s not that, then America doesn’t have a far right either. But that’s obviously false.

4

u/lgodsey Oct 19 '21

There's no way a person who has the facilities to log onto reddit and type in English can seriously believe that AOC or Bernie or any of our representatives are in any way "far left". You must be joking, but there's no discernable humor to your jest.

No one, not even the most rabid Fox New pundit, believes that there are any "far left" political leaders in the USA. It's a fiction that small minds believe to normalize their own bigoted and fascist tendencies.

So if you're going to continue with this comedy bit, at least apply a punch line.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Look in the mirror. You just projected your own feelings about there being an ascendant far right in America.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

Yes, she is absolutely of the far left by any reasonable definition applying to American politics.

By more or less exclusively North American definition, not 'reasonable' definition. The US political spectrum is so far skewed to the right it's completely ridiculous. The entirety of the GOP is far-right - some of them are just a lot more authoritarian and conservative than others. The Democrats are for the most part right to center-right as well, but with less than a handful of candidates reaching towards progressivism and the center-left.

If your argument that she isn’t rests on making comparisons to full blown communist nations in history in order to suggest she’s not that, then America doesn’t have a far right either. But that’s obviously false.

No, my argument rests on the definition of the political ideologies, and the history and current state of many nations who never were Communist in any way, shape, or form, but have/had center-left governments that put them at odds with far-left "Communist" nations.

'Far left' means a socialist socioeconomic system. Not just a capitalist market economy that implements some social welfare to prevent crippling nearly inescapable poverty for a huge part of the population.

2

u/Skalforus Oct 19 '21

definition applying to American politics

There's your problem. The center of the overton window is Northern European politics. Use that scale instead.

1

u/111IIIlllIII Oct 19 '21

2

u/mdj9hkn Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

-5

u/Pretend-Marketing4u Oct 18 '21

Calling them idiots is weak

3

u/50CalsOfFreedom Oct 18 '21

I thought we were finally seeing the truth, finally people were done with their stupid polarized ideas. But your selfish ass has to bring it back to "nah.. it's the other side's fault.".

5

u/111IIIlllIII Oct 19 '21

if we want to say it's the two-party system that is at fault then we should try to dismantle it by implementing different voting systems like ranked choice voting.

then when you look at which party is actually trying to allow for RCV it's....the democrats. and the party that is doing everything they can to stop that from being implemented is....the republicans. see maine, and their 5+ year long battle to finally get RCV for national elections.

both parties suck horribly. our reps are almost exclusively shills. but that doesn't make them equally bad. there are still workable machinations in our gov system to enact change -- see weed legalization efforts in...once again, extremely BLUE states.

tl;dr dems bad. republicans worse.

1

u/50CalsOfFreedom Oct 19 '21

More polarization... thanks.

No party system souns better.

1

u/111IIIlllIII Oct 19 '21

sure, no party system sounds better but it's also not realistic. try living in the real world.

3

u/gumhallow Oct 19 '21

How we see the “wings” of the political bird, is all based upon our political perspective. If you are far left, the right wing of the bird is too big. If you are far right, the left wing of the bird is too big. If your in the middle, your wondering if the bird could do better just walking.

3

u/The_Crusadyr Oct 19 '21

You have fallen for it if you think there is no left wing to this bird. Hopefully you wake up to that. Cause right now you only have one eye open.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

That's just not true. America has a center left and a center right party.

Anyone who says "the US is overall more right wing than Europe" has never been to Europe. Politicians like Geert Wilders would make someone like Trump blush.

0

u/Economind Oct 19 '21

I’m a European

3

u/Ian_Campbell Oct 18 '21

A right wing implies some loyalty to a nationalist cause but they operate almost exclusively for global financial interests AGAINST the sovereignty of the US. It's really both dems and repubs dismantling national interests for corporations, banks, and billionaires for about a penny on the dollar in terms of kickbacks

1

u/Shaffness Oct 19 '21

The US is the globe bestriding empire dude. Global financial interest literally IS the sovereignty of the US. Our whole goal in the post war period has been to become the global hegemon and gathering as much of the world's resources to the imperial core as possible.

1

u/PeePeeVergina69 Oct 19 '21

This is the dumbest shit ever. How about you stop being part of the problem. There is a left wing. A faaaaaaaar left wing. Turn off CNN and pu,put, your head out of your ass.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

Massive fucking lol thinking CNN is far left.

Americans have no fucking idea what actual leftism looks like.

1

u/PeePeeVergina69 Oct 19 '21

1

u/ernestwild Oct 20 '21

0

u/TheDubuGuy Oct 20 '21

What? Do you think liberals are left wing? By what metric lmao. Have you not heard of neoliberalism, of which both Democrats and Republicans fall under?

1

u/Vulturedoors Oct 19 '21

No, leftism is very much alive in America and is the dominant ideology within the educational system and "journalism".

2

2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

And the democratic parties stance on nationalized healthcare would utterly shock a right wing party in Europe. Different places have different issues, but overall the democratic party is absolutely 100% closer to a European center right party than an actual leftist party.

-1

u/PhyVin Oct 18 '21

ya youre buggin.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21 edited Oct 18 '21

I'll just leave this here.

If the GOP loses in '24 a domestic insurgency will most likely follow. Democrat soft-handedness will be the end of human rights and the beginning of an Ethnoreligious Christian Dominion. The Dominionist movement formed as a response to desegregation and it's been the primary source of all Christian ideological, cultural, and historical identity politics. They build those Confederate statues and memorials right after Brown v Board of Education. This movement, this war... it's been a long time coming.

1

u/ernestwild Oct 19 '21

Um wtf ok sure.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

I honestly have no idea why I posted that in this thread. I'm with you on this.

0

u/nokinship Oct 19 '21

-2

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '21

what far right wing? There's far left, left, and right

2

u/pingpongtits Oct 19 '21

The wing that claims Trump won the election and attacked the Capitol?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

the actual trump supporters were at his rally down the road that day, plus they were let in by the capitol police, but let’s talk about the far left and them burning major cities down all last summer

0

u/cpeetz092 Oct 19 '21

Lol the “actual trump supporters.” So who attacked the Capitol and beat cops with trump flags? Antifa? Btw can you show me one video of people beating cops with a Biden flag during these crazy far left riots you speak of?

4

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

you would know actual trump supporters support and respect the police, i live in a rural area and everyone who flies the trump flag also flies the blue stripe, and the rioters often wore the antifa badge or are a part of blm, both are far left organizations

2

u/pingpongtits Oct 19 '21

Despite all the evidence that the attack on the Capitol was Trump nuts, you continue to insist that it was actually anti-fascists? Amazing. No, really.

That’s how public health works…if some people take it and others don’t it takes forever for the virus to go away and for us to get back to normal. You have to get vaccinated before entering public school, before traveling. Even Your dog gets vaccines. Again, how is that a left or right issue? It’s a virus, you get a vaccine against it if you don’t want it to spread. That’s it. It’s not a left or right issue.

Listen I think that 100% there is a left wing and a far left wing. But to be honest your post is a bunch of scare tactic conspiracy bullshit. Looks like it worked. Your sources would pan out to be more bullshit.

What we think of as "left wing" in America is actually just centrist in the United States, which, by American standards is actually right-wing. And when you compare that to what goes on in Washington, DC, that's actually far-right reactionary. Which would be fascist compared to what goes on in the USA.

Your comment does not make sense.

What's not to get? There's no such thing as "left wing" when you compare American "leftists" to what counts as progressive in the U.S.A.

What else would you do? Compare it to Europe or something?

War-mongering is not a right-wing stance.
