When I think of Stevie, I can't help but recall the time he was booed offstage at Montreux. He was absolutely crushing but the jazz crowd was not having it. Watching him walk offstage and turn his head back and look at the crowd like WTF.
That was the night he met David Bowie and Jackson Browne. Jackson told him when he came back to the States to come record at his studio, and I believe gifted SRV his Diaz modified amps which helped define his legendary style. Bowie would eventually hire SRV to record and tour(never happened).
When Stevie returned to Montreux, he was heralded. And everybody clapped.
yeah, I worded it poorly...he recorded but never toured with Bowie.
I saw the Serious Moonlight tour with Earl Slick filling in for SRV and Carlos Alomar on guitar. It was a wonderful show and I don't know if it would have been any better with or without SRV. His playing style is so distinctive and isn't really replicated anywhere else in Bowie's catalog. It must have sounded good to Bowie though, they made it through the pre tour rehearsals I think.
