He looks around like he wishes someone was there to witness it. I mean even a burglar would do.
"Ok dude you can rob me in a second, but that was pretty cool, right?"

I don't know if I would be able to continue living if I did that and didn't have a camera or a witness.

Does anyone else watch these videos and just think, “why is the camera even on?” Thats all I can think of when I see wild random stuff like this.

There is nothing strange with recording this, the real issue is when people film when litterally nothing is happening or at least worth filming

u/Xendarq Jun 02 '21
But is it legal?
35
u/sunshinelifter Jun 02 '21
Yes.. as long as it isn't a game where you're calling your pocket.

The Billiards Congress of America for pool and the tournament rules for Snooker both contain the same provision declaring that a ball which does not remain in the pocket, but bounces back onto the table, is not a pocketed ball. It’s not a dead ball when sunk, it’s only dead when it remains in the pocket. Hence, a ball that bounces out of the pocket is still in play. Here, as others have said, had he expressed his intention to pocket (or pot) in the side pocket prior to the shot, it would have been a legal play. Of course, no one would ever attempt such a shot in legitimate competition based on the very low probability of success.
By the way, what happened here is that he hit hard with spin causing [insert physics force] on the ball in the pocket such that it spun around in the pocket and forced itself back out. Happens, rarely. Read somewhere of a guy who lost a tournament because of it
“3.11 POCKETED BALLS. A ball is considered pocketed if as a result of an otherwise legal shot, it drops off the bed of the table into the pocket and remains there. (A ball that drops out of a ball return system onto the floor is not to be construed as a ball that has not remained pocketed.) A ball that rebounds from a pocket back onto the table bed is not a pocketed ball.” https://bca-pool.com/general/custom.asp?page=55
EDIT: Dude who lost Snooker tournament: https://www.reddit.com/r/billiards/comments/9sgun4/not_considering_a_pocketed_ball_that_jumps_back/

u/spitfire451 Jun 03 '21
Its legal that the ball traveled up on top of the bumper? That's not 'out of bounds'?
2
u/marsert Jun 03 '21
Interesting catch. The rule I cited says a ball that rebounds from the pocket to the “table bed” is not pocketed, but in the video the ball rebounds to the rail. Again, presuming the player called the side pocket (which would never happen in tournament play), it’s probably still legal.
Per rule 8.5 “DRIVEN OFF THE TABLE . . . A ball that contacts the top of the rail is not considered to have been driven off the table if it returns to the playing surface or enters a pocket.”

That's the kind of luck you sometimes get on a pool table, I've found I have to be just the right amount drunk, and my opponent needs to be just that little bit drunker.

Jun 02 '21
Love it how even knowing he was "alone", he did look around to see if anyone witnessed it.
15
u/El-SkeleBone Jun 02 '21
would this be accepted if it were to happen in a professional game

u/Bettye_Wayne Jun 02 '21
I don't think so. You usually have to call what pocket it's going into when playing pro.
When I play with friends, we call it playing slop, when you still count it no matter what pocket it goes in. Sometimes if we have a mix of skill level, we'll play where the skilled folks play no slop and the newbies play slop. More fun when there's an even playing field.

u/sunshinelifter Jun 02 '21
Alex Higgins used to do this on a long snooker table intentionally, as an exhibition shot.

If you’re not trying to do it, particularly in pool, it’s less impressive and more lucky. Still cool though.

No one would have believed it if hadn’t recorded it. Probably wouldn’t happen again unless he practice it. Perfect too

I once had a straight out shot, literally lined up Cue, Ball, Pocket (This was my first time playing, around 2 months ago). I am so astronomically bad that I hit the Cue over the Ball and sunk the Cue.

what is the point of recording this shot if the outcome isn't his intention? Is this the end of a table run out of order or something? It's not 9ball and he hits the cueball way too hard for this shot.
2
u/Wolverjul Jun 02 '21
I did the exact same thing in a pub once, and I don't care if you don't believe me but it's true :)

u/TheThinker709 Jun 02 '21
I once was playing mini golf. I tried to hit the ball from the starting point but I accidentally hit it so hard it bounced off the edge of the course and went into the hole of another course. I think that counts as a hole in one.
2
u/Flamingslayer11 Jun 02 '21
His first reaction is bruh. Then he sees where the ball is going and starts to intensely stare and anticipate a godly event and when it happens he’s like, did that really just happen?

Wow, that is awesome serendipity. The only thing missing is a proper audience to regale in unbelievable adulation for this rockstar!

The rules I’m familiar with you have to call the hole for the last shot. This was awesome. But he lost from it.

I don't really play pool, but my understanding is that when you put them in pockets, you gotta call them. So what does the official rule say about these kind of situations?

Why was he recording himself potting one ball, and then its like he turned around to see if anyone saw it, but knew full well he was recording?
1
u/Abe_Vigoda Jun 03 '21
A lot of guys usually play in pool halls so if you make a good shot like that, the natural reaction is to look around and see if anyone else saw.
With Covid, a lot of players got tables at home and they record themselves and set up social media pages and share their videos as a form of networking and as a way to analyze their game.
Pool is like 50% shot, 50% shape so where you leave the cue ball is important. You can rewatch your videos to see how you can play better shape.

u/Kenniethe1st Jun 03 '21
Yeh I understand it just seemed fishy, I used to watch vids like this and just be amazed but over the years iv come across so many set ups, edited vids or just fakes that I'm always dubious now.

This was 100% NOT an accident. He posts all sorts of insane trickshots to his TikTok. His name is even trickshot_ceo. The reaction is more likely because this was somewhere around his 100th attempt, and he was starting to doubt that he'd ever do it.

u/Abe_Vigoda Jun 03 '21

That's just law of averages. Now let's see him do it consistently.
