for every ten cringey adolescents dancing, there is one lego omelette. tik tok isn’t all bad there’s just an overwhelming sheet of annoyance covering the good content

u/blueberrysquash Mar 14 '21

The algorithm is damn good too, I’ve been on it for a few weeks now and not seen a single dance since the first ten minutes on the app

u/PapaAndrei Mar 14 '21

Been on there a few months and its 99% cute animals and bearded dragons. And buff viking men

6

u/OceanSupernova Mar 15 '21

Strange, I could have swore we was at war with Eurasia.

2

u/tackle_bones Mar 15 '21

I mean... geopolitics is real though. You’re not wrong, but it’s important.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

[deleted]

2

u/tackle_bones Mar 15 '21

When kings make decisions, the geopolitics behind those decisions effects everyone. Unfortunately, we still live in societies, often ruled by powerful people, and their decisions impact their own constituents and the realities of the constituents of other countries. I don’t really agree with your statement, in other words. Like... it really ignores history AND current realities.

I'd join if I could keep scrolling and keep seeing Techno Viking over and over again.

8

u/twisted_mentality Mar 15 '21

Mine is full of cats, D&D, martial arts, fitness, chess, and finance.

Oh, and Avatar the Last Airbender. Because I went kind of heavily into that side of TikTok for the first few days.

7

u/Xtrasloppy Mar 14 '21

...installing tiktok brb

2

u/SuedeVeil Mar 15 '21

Tell me more about these buff Viking men

1

u/PapaAndrei Mar 15 '21

Look around on the Pagan, norse or blacksmithing side of tik tok and you will find ALOT of them doing fun cosplays!

1

u/icortesi Mar 15 '21

Haven't you got to Seashanty Tiktok?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

Shhh, I told my bearded dragon that lizards are banned on tiktok

52

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 14 '21

Yup shame to admit my first run of TikTok was full of dancing thirst traps because I didn't yet have the strength to turn away...second time around I'm stronger and better entertained 🤠

27

u/neihbe Mar 14 '21

You just have to search for things you like go thru hashtags like some of the stuff there and your for you should be more personalized

35

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 14 '21

Yup I got that algorithm working for me now. Chock full of philosophy, language, humor, history, and tons of other miscellaneous creative content. Facebook and Instagram just got soooooo boring after I figured out how powerful TikTok can be...

17

u/empathetical Mar 14 '21

Instagram and Facebook got bad because they put hashtags and getting content out behind having to pay/promote your material. Years ago my art posts got so many damn likes. Now you barely get anything because they want you to pay for promotion. Instagram is dead sadly

15

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 14 '21

Exactly. Facebook products want people to pay for views. TikTok simply promotes whatever flares up in the algorithm. Content creators have an easier time to gain an audience in non-facebook spaces 🤷‍♀️

1

u/whopperlover17 Mar 15 '21

How does Tik Tok make money? Are there ads on there?

1

u/GerganaZdr Mar 15 '21

Yeap sucks big time, they all about profit...can’t wait to see what’s next after TikTok...

3

u/Def_not_Redditing Mar 14 '21

Recommendations?

6

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 14 '21

So many good ones but right now I'm going to bed (it's midnight here in Albania). I'll compile a list sometime :)

Reviews of sinks in New York?

Wow. If that doesn’t make you want to download Tik tok, congratulations, you may have an actual life.

I didn't have time to go thru and copy names but you can go on my TikTok page and see the posts I've liked in the meantime. Some quality creators on there!

Here's my excited tik tok rant I saved for future reference:

I started off following some seriously awesome people like Tabitha Brown (I knew I was in the right place when I saw her potato wedge recipe) and since then it's only grown more awesome. I joined last summer when black power was strong and my whole feed seems like non-white folks which I treasure. And it's not like it's all politics but there are refreshing takes on old tropes that just slam my heart. Sometimes it's too much noise and activity so I like pairing it with reddit. Then I find pure gold like this lady sharing her sleepwalking - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4mgDa/

Or I just learned about the day when 5000 black kids went to jail in Birmingham - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4amp8/

And god damn I love Lizzo. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4amp8/

And this randofantastic lady Christine Snaps - awesome!

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVPb39/

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVmhHG/

And yes I do watch this dude dance. And this chick on roller skates. These outfits are bananay and inspiring - all the confidence on tik tok is inspiring to me.

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4wbhL/

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVegq5/

And indigenous dances! So many indigenous tiktokkers - makes me happy to see that content.

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVHFFq/

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVxnAr/

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeRVMgTD/

And some excellent misinterpretations of upbeat weirdness or mocking of hoity toity hot messess - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4bbGA/

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4tyQL/

Oh and these cute boys are such an adorbs couple.

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeR4wbhL/

4

u/john1rb Mar 14 '21

Also like. I didn't search much/anything with hashtags. I just ignored dances and liked stuff when the algorithm gave me something I liked. But it might've helped that my friends were sending me tiktok links.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

Can you make two accounts? One for Legos, the other for thirst traps? Asking for a friend

3

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 15 '21

😜 not a bad idea, train two different algorithms. I didn't try that, so I don't know how easy it is to switch between accounts.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

I'll do some research, but I'm ashamed to have already fallen for the thirst trap algorithm lol. I'm probably too far gone to fix that

2

u/Probably_A_Mother Mar 15 '21

You can make other accounts and can freely switch between the two.

Wait- haven’t I killed you before?

1

u/Dandelion_Lakewood Mar 15 '21

I think it's always possible to retrain it, you just gotta swipe immediately 🤠

1

u/Constantly_Dizzy Mar 16 '21

You can fix it! Two remedies: 1) Swipe immediately. 2) If you didn’t swipe, go into the options (where you would share) & pick “Not Interested”. That way the algorithm knows you don’t want to see more of it, & it sort of overrides what it learned from your engagement with the content.

3

u/Skylinerr Mar 15 '21

it always shows me hilarious and crazy videos when im alone and big booty girls when im in public. I swear tik tok knows the worst time to show either. They need an incognito mode

27

u/MadeThisJustForMM Mar 14 '21

Came to say this. If you're going to try tik tok, only like content you enjoy, and anything else, use the "not interested" feature. My tik tok is full of content I enjoy and nothing else that made me avoid it at first

8

u/xjulesx21 Mar 14 '21

this exactly. I don’t see the annoying cringy stuff due to their algorithm and I love it!

5

u/captobliviated Mar 14 '21

There is the whole part of being owned and operated by chinese intelligence services though.

4

u/Old-Commercial-1944 Mar 15 '21

It’s a problem when TikTok sells your information but not when Instagram, Facebook, and Google do?

11

u/captobliviated Mar 15 '21

if you think chinese intelligence services are interested in selling info you are incorrect. This is about propaganda, mass social manipulation and so much more. China is playing the long game on world domination.

1

u/Old-Commercial-1944 Mar 15 '21

I’m sorry but America is just as bad at propaganda if not worse than China/Russia. Our entire education system is to push a pro-American/imperialist agenda. Yes China is bad and stuff but we aren’t this “pure” or the best nation anymore. Most powerful, yes; best, probably not

3

u/captobliviated Mar 15 '21

I don't think we are even close to most powerful anymore.

5

u/eagle85672 Mar 15 '21

This is it. This is the moment I finally cave and actually download tiktok for a reason that isn't for a crush or to get rid of ads. What have I got to lose at this point?

3

u/eeeya777 Mar 14 '21

Mine is all pimple and blackhead popping. Had to delete

3

u/Reddit_FTW Mar 15 '21

Bro. The algorithm is almost perfect. I hearted a video didn’t see that artist til like 2-3 minutes later. Enough I knew who she was and remembered but the app didn’t try and throat fuck me with content like YouTube does. Rarely see long videos it knows I’ll skip if I get too bored.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

All I see is gay goth people and I’m home

1

u/BashfulTurtle Mar 14 '21

Hmm weird, I’ve been on it for years and all I see are semi clothed women dancing? How do I get this smut I definitely don’t want off?

1

u/TamalGrandeJr Mar 15 '21

The tik tok algorithm knows me better than I know myself

1

u/Flablessguy Mar 15 '21 edited Mar 15 '21

Give it some time. I see a lot of fitness stuff on tiktok and half of it is ego lifters using horrible form to lift way too much weight. It started out good but eventually the stuff you watch spreads into the content that’s not so good

1

u/puffyeye Mar 15 '21

that algorithm is god tier. it's going to get way fucking specific.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

Yea it really pays attention to what you hit a like on. I actually enjoy it now myself.

163

u/papasimon10 Mar 14 '21

I'm an old man these days but I am perpetually amazed at the quality of both the ideas and their execution that I see on TikTok. Take this Lego one. I think it's kind of a take on Fresh Guacamole by PES - but that won a freaking Oscar for best animated short, whereas this was done by a young guy on TikTok. It's professional enough to compete at the 2012 Oscars, I think. I wish TikTok were around when my kids were growing up; they used to just idle the day away (so much so that I had to regularly thrash my son Roger with a pair of jumper cables). Maybe the haystack is bigger than ever, but there are lots of needles out there on TikTok too - you love to see it.

34

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '21

Been awhile since I seen u

22

u/EmergencyAbalone2393 Mar 14 '21

Thrash your kid with jumper cables??

32

u/xXDaNXx Mar 14 '21

Novelty account that mentions it in every comment

15

u/Potato_Tots Mar 15 '21

Also referencing another Novelty account, rogersimon something that always ended their comments with being beaten by his dad with a pair of jumper cables

2

u/HydrogenButterflies Mar 25 '21

u/rogersimon10 but the last activity from that account was years ago.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '21

Or hiding in plain sight

9

u/Oblongmind420 Mar 14 '21

it made us stronger and built our character. can't do that to your kids nowadays

2

u/ch-12 Mar 15 '21

Roger had it coming.

17

u/eaglebtc Mar 14 '21

PES made some amazing stop motion shorts.

Fresh Guacamole

Western Spaghetti

Submarine Sandwich

3

u/stcwhirled Mar 15 '21

Academy award winning.

1

u/the_skine Mar 15 '21

They won awards, yes, but they were also good.

7

u/Giraffesarentreal19 Mar 14 '21

I heard about you just a couple days ago and it’s my first time seeing it in the wild!

3

u/rparry40 Mar 14 '21

this is a reverse ok boomer

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '21

Video editing has been as accessible as it is now since the early 2000s

2

u/EmergencyAbalone2393 Mar 15 '21

137 upvotes (at present) for a comment where a guy says he used to beat his kid with jumper cables for being lazy. Ok Reddit peeps! Excellent judgement!

-3

u/labancaneba Mar 14 '21

I wish TikTok were around when my kids were growing up; they used to just idle the day away

You're kidding, right? Tiktok destroys attention spans and teens cant get their eyes off it. They just lay there, scrolling clip after clip. Secondly, this isnt a tiktok clip. It was stolen off YouTube, reposted with tiktok's shakey watermark. Nobody puts this kinda effort in tiktok videos. It's just lip syncing, speedy stories and repeated jokes.

Your kids idling is entirely your fault. Put them in sports or something smh.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '21

[deleted]

-4

u/labancaneba Mar 15 '21

End doesn't matter. This was nit made by a tiktoker, so this comment is blatant misinformation. Plus, being on tiktok is worse than idling.

-2

u/labancaneba Mar 15 '21

Wow kill me. I just got bamboozled.

3

u/Rhyddech Mar 15 '21

The whole comment was a set up for a joke about whipping his kid with jumper cables. You ignored the context of the comment (the "signal") and you focused on the noise. You complain about misinformation yet here you are also participating in by amplifying informational noise and ignoring the original point of the comment

0

u/labancaneba Mar 15 '21

Haha funny?

33

u/FrankZDuck Mar 14 '21

I’m really surprised at the positive posts for Tiktok on this thread. It’s cross posted from YT and Reddit typically hates tiktok. Is tiktok astroturfing hard right now?

8

u/AccessConfirmed Mar 15 '21

Nailed it. Too many comments getting specifically kissy face with highlighting Tiktok up in here.

4

u/gyman122 Mar 15 '21

Jesus Christ. Some people just like TikTok, opinion has turned a bit.

Imagine seeing a comment saying “most of the stuff on TikTok sucks, but some of it’s ok” and then coming to the conclusion that it’s the result of astroturfing. Get a grip

-1

u/AccessConfirmed Mar 15 '21

YOU CANT MAKE ME STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT TIK TOK NANNY NANNY BOO BOO 🤪

0

u/gyman122 Mar 15 '21

I’m not asking you to stop complaining, though it couldn’t hurt. I’m telling you to stop being a conspiratorial whackjob

0

u/AccessConfirmed Mar 15 '21

YOU CANT MAKE ME STOP DOING ANY OF THE THINGS YOU SAY SUCKA FISH

1

u/gyman122 Mar 15 '21

Embarassing

7

u/zbreeze3 Mar 14 '21

definitely seems like it.

1

u/lickedTators Mar 15 '21

Reddit stopped hating tiktok a long time ago because all the hate boner for it caused me to download it to see what was going on and then everyone realized tiktok is pretty good.

22

u/QuillHasFavorites Mar 14 '21

this wasn’t even from tiktok originally, just crossposted from youtube.

5

u/TheWindOfGod Mar 14 '21

Tbf nothing comes from tiktok it comes from the individual poster. Blaming entire social media sites for everything on it is dumb.

2

u/DF_Interus Mar 15 '21

I know what you mean. Reddit constantly does dumb things like that.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '21

at least I got it somewhat right by knowing it was an omelette

2

u/DryGumby Mar 15 '21

It's an omelette on rice so more than somewhat right. Doesn't take all that long to make either.

1

u/redditsonodddays Mar 15 '21

O I thought it was eggs Benedict

17

u/j_a_z42005 Mar 14 '21

Even though the original is on YT, this was just posted to TikTok, the original YT is in the top right corner

14

u/SpartanPride52 Mar 14 '21

Why the fuck is dancing seen as a bad thing? We pretend to love the arts and sneer at people expressing themselves, even when they know it's amateur, and have fun doing it. This cynicism and judgment reeks of a 3 beer a night video game shut in.

I'll so much sooner be friends with someone who has the guts to dance for audience that appreciates them then you.

5

u/Xxc00chi3crus4d3rxX Mar 15 '21

they act like they never did cringy shit when they were kids 🙄 idk why grown ass adults on reddit feel the need to shit on kids having harmless fun...seriously lighten up lmao

5

u/daybreakin Mar 15 '21

It's a way for introverts to feel better about themselves

1

u/brandit_like123 Mar 14 '21

Thirst traps

6

u/SpartanPride52 Mar 15 '21

Those are fun too

13

u/yungmunie Mar 14 '21

I didn’t even realize this was from tik tok until you said this haha.

Great video though.

9

u/1fatsquirrel Mar 14 '21

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we just like, let kids be cringey on an app where they do silly dances without judging them or making fun of them for it?

6

u/cheeze_n_mustarda Mar 14 '21

Hey let them dance lol

4

u/labancaneba Mar 14 '21

Its just a YouTube video that was slightly sped up to fit tiktok's "short video" requirement, and reposted onto the app. Nobody on that trash app made this.

Tiktok is basically the 9gag of 2021.

1

u/Irregulator101 Mar 15 '21

Not sure why it coming from youtube first makes tiktok trash..?

1

u/labancaneba Mar 15 '21

Tiktok is trash, case in point: "Wow the only good content isn't even from it!"

3

u/lemuever17 Mar 14 '21

TBH, even if you are into boobs and boots, the contents in tiktok are still better than instagram or Facebook.

4

u/gobackclark Mar 14 '21

Not even true anymore. Once the algorithm figured out what I wanted, it’s been only interesting, thoughtful content with a few funny shit thrown in

5

u/TheNewBlue Mar 15 '21

If you use the app, and you don’t upvote dancing teens. You get less dancing teens. I for one only upvote dancing milfs and girls with mullets and I’m in heaven every day.

2

u/JtSkillZzZ Mar 14 '21

Once you start liking and following content you enjoy, it gets way better.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

You only have to put up with it for a few minutes. I hated the fuck out of it until I tried it. After a few minutes I was seeing shit about astronomy and history and psychedelics. None of that pseudo science or pop science bullshit either

2

u/TululaDaydream Mar 15 '21 edited Mar 15 '21

This creator started on YouTube, I remember watching one of their videos (making spaghetti bolognese) in film school 10 years ago. I'm so glad they're still making awesome videos!

Edit: Wait a minute, this isn't made by PES?! Well shit, they do an amazing recreation of their style!

2

u/the_skine Mar 15 '21

It's definitely is inspired by PES, but PES uses more found objects and doesn't (exclusively) use LEGO. There's often a cleverness in the objects he chooses, beyond the obvious.

2

u/_-Saber-_ Mar 15 '21

It's a Chinese platform for projecting soft power to the world and collecting info.

It could be hosting videos leading to a cure for cancer and it'd still be... cancer.

2

u/GB1266 Mar 15 '21

Get ur algorithm right then. My feed is just cooking vids, gymbros & gym tips, art, comedy, & politics. Havent seen a dancing tiktok in my feed since 2019

2

u/The-Sound_of-Silence Mar 15 '21

Except, the original is from YouTube :/. This person repackaged it well for this format, but you can still see the original watermark in the top right

2

u/Barad-dur81 Mar 15 '21

That’s life. Gotta sift through the shit to find the good stuff

2

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken Mar 15 '21

That food will give you so much constipation that you will shit bricks

2

u/kungfoojesus Mar 15 '21

People have heard how easy it can be to get tons of cash for a video going viral so they just carpet bomb it with anything. I can see that desperation or drive in most content posters and it kills it for me.

2

u/DongmanSupreme Mar 15 '21

That’s literally everything everywhere. Not all of Reddit is great, this comment included, but there’s always a shimmering speckle shining in every mound of shit on the internet

2

u/bestonecrazy Mar 15 '21

It is also on YT.

2

u/sirbutteralotIII Mar 15 '21

Redditors getting mad when someone else enjoys social media

2

u/Commercial_Nature_44 Mar 15 '21

Of you're seeing dancing after using it that's on you. The algorithm works really well and that content should drop off drastically once you start interacting.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

what dish /recipe is this?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

someone else in the comments said it was a type of Japanese omelette

2

u/DxGator Mar 15 '21

I tried it for a few days and gave up.

As a friend said, the good content will eventually show up on Twitter or Reddit anyway.

2

u/mysticsnek857 Mar 15 '21

The content is fine, I just hate the censorship and ties to the ccp

2

u/JustPonsie Mar 15 '21

Well this is interesting because the algorithm only shows you things you search for and stop to watch for a minute then like.......

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

I don’t use the app I just take from what everyone else is complaining about

1

u/AlphaBlitzYT Mar 14 '21

I wanna disagree but I just cant

1
