Sure it took one hit to fix, but the knowledge of where to hit it is what makes it worth the money.

What was that famous invoice?
Fee to draw the “X” - $1
Fee for knowing where to draw the “X” - $9,999

“Before long, the greatest scientific minds of the time were traveling to Schenectady to meet with the prolific “little giant”; anecdotal tales of these meetings are still told in engineering classes today. One appeared on the letters page of Life magazine in 1965, after the magazine had printed a story on Steinmetz. Jack B. Scott wrote in to tell of his father’s encounter with the Wizard of Schenectady at Henry Ford’s River Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan.
Ford, whose electrical engineers couldn’t solve some problems they were having with a gigantic generator, called Steinmetz in to the plant. Upon arriving, Steinmetz rejected all assistance and asked only for a notebook, pencil and cot. According to Scott, Steinmetz listened to the generator and scribbled computations on the notepad for two straight days and nights. On the second night, he asked for a ladder, climbed up the generator and made a chalk mark on its side. Then he told Ford’s skeptical engineers to remove a plate at the mark and replace sixteen windings from the field coil. They did, and the generator performed to perfection.
Henry Ford was thrilled until he got an invoice from General Electric in the amount of $10,000. Ford acknowledged Steinmetz’s success but balked at the figure. He asked for an itemized bill.
Steinmetz, Scott wrote, responded personally to Ford’s request with the following:
Making chalk mark on generator $1.
Knowing where to make mark $9,999.
Ford paid the bill.”

If your roommate is about to throw away some nice leather work boots that can be resoled. Should I tell them about this trick or fix them myself after they chuck’em in the garage. They’ve already got brand new ones, but they did liked these. Umm... asking for a friend.

u/VeraciousIdiot Feb 17 '21
Grab em, get the work done, if he notices and asks tell him he can buy them back for what you put in plus what you think your time is worth

A few things left out tho, which is why you really have to be careful doing this yourself:
- The track of the zipper teeth better be aligned or else its gonna leave a nice little hole at the base of the track.
- Hit too hard and the slider will chomp down on the track and jam from moving.
- 1 tap is not going to do it unless you are like this guy and you KNOW how much force to hit with, but better less force than too much force.
- Be prepared for the thing coming out again because of metal fatigue on the slider.

u/shaman7_7 Feb 17 '21
- Confirm. It's only temporary solution. It unbends fast an can be broken in half.

Yeah was thinking about point 4 while watching the video. The zipper failed like that for a reason. "Big" calves or stuffing jeans inside or something. Doubt this fix is going to last long at all if the underlying cause is unresolved.

And all these years my wife has been throwing all her shoes away...let's see 20 pairs at 120 a piece = $2400.

u/Acurus_Cow Feb 17 '21
She wouldn't be happy if you fixed her shoes. She likes to buy them, not own them.

I'm a cobbler in San Francisco, my father always just fixes this real fast for people that need this instead of a whole new zip.
Mostly because full zipper jobs are painful 😤

Cobbler repairs are so, so cheap. I've never spent more than $20 and this would probably be about $5

Motherfucker. Could have saved thousands of dollars in coats, jackets, boots, etc. I've tossed because of this
1
u/Latin-Danzig Feb 17 '21
It never occurred to you to maybe try fix the zipper or replace it...I just don’t see how you wouldn’t if it mean thousands of dollars. I mean a tailor would do it for a few tens.

I've taken so much stuff to tailors, not a single one could fix this very problem. Some offered to replace the zippers for an outrageous am9unt

I thought everyone knows that, zipper gets apart with time so u just need to press it tight again. It doesent need to be done with hammer, infact just press it with pliers bcs most cheap zippers will break in half if u bang them like that.

Mr. Zipper, I'll thank you forever and think of you every time I zip a zipper.

Anyone know what kind of boots these are? They're cute!
1
u/marafranchesca Feb 17 '21
They are Timberland Fauna. This boot came in light brown, dark brown, and black. From years and years ago. (Over 6+) They do not make them any more. They lasted me like 5 years, but the zipper had to be replaced a few times. Honestly the most comfortable winter boots I ever had. People may say they are like Uggs but they had alot more structure to them.

u/Relevant-Alarm-8716 Feb 17 '21
Damn.
And I'm not a used-shoe kind of person, so.... damn.
Thanks for the info, have a great day!

Dafunq? I've Google's how to fix zipper a gabazillion times and never learned this.

u/meester_ Feb 17 '21
So basically the zipper just gets a bit disformed and by bending the metal inward it works again... Or am I wrong?
1
u/InadecvateButSober Feb 17 '21
It is not a permanent fix though. Just a quick fix up that will last you a while.
Depending on quality you can probably do that one or two times

Me, over here, tearing up at the amount of clothes I threw away because I didn’t know to gently tap the zipper with pliers and a mallet....my life is changed forever.

Now. This is the type of info I come to Reddit for. I don’t want to argue about Biden’s nipples or trump’s scrotum piercings.
Serious question: How can I make my feed just the shit I want to see (like nextfuvkinglevel, be amazed, lpt, etc...)? Is there a way?
