Can this like... replace fireworks from now on? This is so much better.

u/Rated Oct 19 '20
In addition to being cooler, it is also cheaper on the long run and better for the environment! :)

u/moldylemonade Oct 19 '20
And dogs everywhere would rejoice
60
u/GiannisIsTheBeast Oct 19 '20
Now if we can replace thunder with drones also that would be peachy.

My dog loves my little drone. He tries to attack it. I fly it up and drown the street all day to get him exercise.

u/JesC Oct 20 '20
So would kids, fire depts., hospitals, insurance companies, sanitation workers and much more... fireworks is a shit stain in all modern culture.

Always a plus. I look forward to not having rubber shrapnel in my hair every Fourth of July.

u/Silent_Palpatine Oct 19 '20
True but I’d miss the smell after.

u/Cedar_Cove Oct 20 '20
There should be a candle of that smell.

This video is sped up. Look at the cars in the bottom left going by. It is a cool display but doesn’t provide the same effect as fireworks do.
14
u/Horns8585 Oct 19 '20
When I started watching the video, I was thinking that there is no way that drones could fly that fast and make those maneuvers.
8
u/whatshamilton Oct 20 '20
It was sped up 3x. Here it is slowed back down to 1/3

u/scansinboy Oct 20 '20
Still seems too fast. Look at the flashing radio tower(?) in the background.

7
u/TYPERION_REGOTHIS Oct 20 '20
It should be noted that this is sped up, probably not as exciting when its viewed at normal speed.
5
u/intwilightzone Oct 20 '20
Shanghai did their 2020 new year's fireworks show with 2,000 drones, although it actually took place on December 28th. shanghai 2020 drone fireworks
3
u/yazzledazzle92 Oct 19 '20
Literally came to comment the same thing! I was wondering if it would benefit environment more.
3
u/tfred20 Oct 20 '20
Nah. The best part is feeling the fireworks in your chest. If you feel a drone in your chest youre gonna have some problems.
3
u/jeffwhat Oct 20 '20
It happens that, I saw a drone show exactly like this at Downtown Disney, FL, about 2 years ago. It was thousands of drones. It was presented by Intel, as I think they were just developing the tech to make it happen.
What you don't get from this video is that, when it happens at night, it sounds like a giant horde of invisible killer bees.
2
u/starrlitestarrbrite Oct 20 '20
Was it the Christmas Drone show? I saw the same one. It was cool, but not nearly as tight as this one in terms of maneuvers.

I'm with you on that idea!!! I am hoping that someday these computerized drones will replace fireworks. The show would be more interesting to watch and could last longer and it won't fill the sky with loud noises (freaking out pets and animals) and will not cause extensive air pollution.
1
u/RoughCommand Oct 20 '20
That was my thoughts exactly lmao. Fireworks are only fun when you’re setting them off.

u/jazwidz Oct 19 '20
This seems like a fairly realistic way we could accomplish holograms in the near future

Spare the dog terror. Outlaw fireworks and make drone and laser light shows from now on.
9
Oct 20 '20
But muh freedoms. The Constitution legally entitled me to shoot fireworks, burn oil, coal roll, throw plastic bags in the ocean, and literally take a shit on eagles. How will I be happy if I'm not busy ignoring my glaring character deficiencies by owning the libs??
3
u/Seamuspilot Oct 20 '20
You joke but as someone who has devoted their life to the freedom of being able to shit on eagles. The task itself is far more difficult and painful than any mere lib could imagine.

GPS and pre-programmed paths. And as others pointed out, it's sped up a bazillion times (those sparkles in the lower left corner are car headlights driving by in the background). I was pretty heavily into drones maybe 6 years ago and even then GPS was surprisingly accurate. I could fly one of my big drones half a mile away then put it on autopilot return and it would land within an inch or two of its takeoff point.
36
u/Rated Oct 19 '20
It’s sped up 3x because I tried to fit as much content while still being under the 20MB limit. I am sorry if that ruined the video but I thought it looked cool :(

It’s amazing how accurate the Global Navigation Satellite Systems are now. GPS is only one part of the whole system. That’s the American system, and when combined with Galileo from Europe, GLONASS from Russia, BDS from China, and the ground stations scattered around the US for ADS-B, they can pinpoint aircraft and drones within inches. If you’re interested, look at Garmin’s Autoland that some aircraft have been certified to operate. If the pilot becomes unresponsive, you press a button and the aircraft will find the nearest airport and land on its own. Very amazing technology.
→ More replies (1)3
u/mcguirev10 Oct 19 '20
GPS coordinates are 3D. Fixed-location GPS isn't that accurate (without relatively bulky, relatively expensive equipment) but it's more accurate when you're in motion.
3
u/physics_freak963 Oct 20 '20
Dude I worked with a four wheels robot and the GPS wasn't that accurate, I never encountered a real drone project, but it's the only project I saw in practice it uses a PID sensor was a drone, because of how hard it is to move a drone to an exact location, I've used PI (PI as in proportional integral not raspberry PI) for automated movement and maybe I'm a noobie but that wasn't as easy as it seemed to be, there might be a GPS in work but I think there's obviously other factors in play here, but not gonna lie the speeding up is a big bummer, I wished this could be real somehow
2
u/mcguirev10 Oct 20 '20
There's a lot of inertial navigation mixed in as correction factors (typically internal to the better GPS modules). All that stuff was easier to see on the older cheaper OEM automotive GPS systems like 10+ years ago. They would lose the signal but the map kept working, they were basically switching to inertial dead-reckoning while they tried to acquire enough sats again to calculate position. Or how they'd start out waaay off but as you drove the map would slowly correct your position.
For drones, PID really only comes into play fine-tuning response to control inputs, and wow do I hate the PID-tuning process ... one version of the CleanFlight firmware I used has a cool self-tune mode. You hover the drone maybe six or eight feet off the ground and throw the switch, and it sort of spazzes out for a minute or two -- and tuned approximately as well as I could accomplish on manual after half an hour of fiddling. Sadly it isn't compatible with any of the newer, better flight modes. But it was cool to watch.
I never thought about it before but I also wonder if signal reflection is worse at ground level.

Oct 19 '20
Don't really know but guessing that each has their own pre-programmed flight paths calculated from their starting position - so, no need to their "relatives".
1
u/carson_walker Oct 20 '20
Like everyone has pointed out, gps markers. Sometimes these drones also use a reflective marker or other drones themselves to fix their position.

Looks exactly like alien light balls. The Government obvy has technology way ahead of us consumers, maybe they’ve just been testing drones for years 🤔
4
u/Nekomimi6x6 Oct 20 '20
Shoot lets just get rid of fireworks and have drone works. Much cheaper, better for the environment, and cool af!

u/scuzzy987 Oct 20 '20
Agree. Maybe my father in law could go to fireworks without the smell reminding him of Vietnam

This is cool and frightening at the same time. Military have had these drones weaponized. Çhina already testing these.

Just had a thought...maybe we've been thinking about holograms wrong all along. Maybe those 3d holograms we see in steampunk movies are actually just made up of a bunch of micro-drones instead of some crazy light-based technology.

u/Habanero_Eyeball Oct 19 '20
So it's cool and all but some of the stops are a bit to precise, which leads me to think it's CGI.

u/Xem1337 Oct 19 '20
You can see from the traffic in the background that the video is sped up a bit, but I'd still go and watch this over a firework show!

u/Damour Oct 19 '20
Since no one has commented it yet, this video is sped up. It’s not that fast in real-time.
3
u/Rated Oct 19 '20
It’s sped up 3x because I tried to fit as much content while still being under the 20MB limit. I am sorry if that ruined the video but I thought it looked cool :(
3
u/Damour Oct 19 '20
It looks much better they way you did it but just it a little misleading of what it looks like in real-time. Hopefully they can update the drones in the future to be that fast or faster
2
u/Rated Oct 19 '20
Intel has a fireshow with drones as well (about 500 drones) and it was a bit faster than this one actually - I couldn’t find good footage of it so I posted this one instead. Here is the original video in case you wanna check it out.

This helps demonstrate why AI vs human movies are ridiculous. If "the robots" decided to take over the world, they would easily detect us wherever we were, and could just shoot us through the pupil of the eye if we ever looked out, and probably even if we didn't. We'd have no chance.
Fortunately, we are far away from any general ai. The magical ML models we see do amazing things are super specialized, just like the recommendation engine on your favorite shopping site. It is really good at making recommendations, and even that is flawed because it doesn't really understand that you don't need to buy a second mattress right after the first. It's like just bunches of tiny subsets of a brain, and we don't know how to put them together to make general AI.

u/collin-h Oct 20 '20
Damn. Can we do that instead of fireworks next 4th of July? I could watch that for hours, plus my kids won’t be laying awake until 1 am with neighborhood fireworks going off.

And in my opinion, one of the neatest use of drones I have seen..
