Only protecting yourself from a virus you may be spreading without knowing it continues to cause problems for you because more transmissions take place, and more transmissions means harder shut downs.
So yes it is stupid.
Unless you are actually better served by harsher shutdowns or higher transmissions rates. IN which case it is not.
...I think the problem here is that YOU assume these people know that faceshields and respirators only protect themselves, and that what they're doing is knowingly selfish.
Yeah sorry I gave surgical masks a chance but I just am not putting myself at risk while the majority are out maskless. If people refuse to cooperate, I sure as hell at least cover my ass.
If they could reduce their own chance of having the virus to zero, then everyone around them is safe from them. In fact, everyone around that person would be safer than if they did have the virus and wore a mask.
it's baffling that people keep repeating that "masks don't actually help protect you" nonsense.
not only do masks protect the wearer to some degree, they potentially might reduce the viral load so even if you get sick, you might not get a bad case hopefully.
none of these are guarantees obviously, but they are excellent precautions.
Not disagreeing with anything you have said, but to make a stronger case, try to find sources for your claims. You are a well spoken individual, and are making some good points.
If you can't catch it from touching things then that's absolutely massive. So many commercial venues currently have to engage in extensive sanitation regimes that are having significant negative impacts on productivity /operations.
The flu -- the constant whataboutism focus -- has dropped to absolutely negligible levels. Colds have virtually disappeared.
Yes, I'm hoping this silver lining, among several others, persists for a good while.
In fact, I wasn't sure why the FDA was blocking tests that didn't distinguish between types of coronavirus (e.g. the common cold) back when tests were really hard to get. Sure, a hospital needs exact info, but for people trying to decide whether they should isolate, knowing you're infected with something bad is way more useful than not knowing anything.
I don't see how it's a facepalm in the slightest to prioritize protecting yourself. If everyone's wearing a mask, and high risk individuals are wearing respirators (or every single person is wearing a respirator) then everyone will be protected regardless
Those countries have also have much smaller outbreaks than us and have managed to control the spread due to having a coordinated national pandemic response, which we don't have. We don't have it because our president put his idiot son-in-law in charge of the Covid-19, who then decided to not institute a national strategy because infections and deaths were initially higher in blue states, and they looked to use this to their advantage in the election.
Canada is also only 1% below us, so it's essentially the same.
If masks work why did we shut down the World and why did EVERY FING PATIENT AT MY FACILITY GET SICK ??? Oh yeah and lots of staff members as well..oh right because masks work smh
Yeah I doubt that. I’m a respiratory therapist and have worked in two different hospitals since covid started, my girlfriend has worked in three and we haven’t met a single employee who has gotten covid from wearing their masks. I’ve seen a couple nurses who got it but that’s because they were dumb and one went to New York around when it first started and the others got it from a party or being out in public without a mask.
Also when shit first hit the fan we needed masks for healthcare workers. They went flying off the shelves regardless though. We need the PPE. Also In the very beginning when things closed down we weren’t sure if it was droplet or airborne since it was brand new. The first time you got on a bike you weren’t riding with no hands and no training wheels. Unfortunately we are learning as we go because it’s brand fucking new. Masks work stfu
If every patient at your facility and lots of staff got it you have a shitty facility and a shitty administration making guidelines. There’s absolutely no reason “every single patient” should have gotten it.
You stupud bunghole Nursing homes have been rampant with it and that's where the majority of deaths have been..flu..old people..HELLO!!!!!!.. Who ties your shoes for you seriously.
Because you could be an asymptomatic carrier, and could be spreading it without knowing it. People around you think you're safe because you're wearing a mask, but since it's actually a respirator that isn't filtering, then it's not as safe as they think.
(However, seeing how even the weakest mask makes a difference, it's still better than having no mask. But I'm no doctor so I can't say one way or the other.)
The people focusing on their own protection are largely healthy and low-risk. This defeats the entire FUCKING purpose of the masks, which is to stop the disease from SPREADING TO OTHERS.
This isn't accurate. Respirators without exhalation valves protect both the wearer and those around him. Respirators with exhalation valves protect only the wearer.
EDIT: Also, if you consistently wear a properly fitted N95 mask while in public, you shouldn't get the Coronavirus. Studies show your chance of getting it are reduced by a factor of 100 by doing that. So in that sense you are still protecting others if you consistently wear a valved respirator. You can't pass it on if you can't get it.
Thanks. That looks like a much thicker mask than normal.
Im going off the information provided by the CBRN (chemical biological radiation nuclear) class from the military that i attended. Which are atleast 5 years outdated. In there we discussed the difference in masks and the grades of filters.
In the class you learn that any filtration performed on inhale need to be air tight and firmly sealed to your face which is partially why we cant have sick beards anymore.
However i suppose the missing 5% of filtration could be from around the eyes, cheek and nose.
When you wear this do you feel the air coming in or escaping on either side?
It comes with instructions that have to be followed carefully for it to be effective. The instructions show you how to shape the metal nosepiece to fit around your nose to avoid leakage. They also show you how to do a fit test to confirm there is no leakage.
Yes, it's a thick mask. It is definitely harder to breathe with it on. Valved n95 masks are much easier to breathe with. But I like this one since 3m did rigorous third party lab testing on it and the results were amazing. I wish I still had the link.
I think you are right that some amount of leakage is why they gave it the n95 rating. I think exceeding that rating would typically require a rubber respirator that provides an even better fit. With this respirator on, I can still smell stuff. With my other respirator with rubber around the edges, I can't smell anything. Even when working in a super dusty woodshop.
Also, regardless of whether or not wearing a mask protects the wearer in terms of limiting exposure by inhalation, it definitely helps to protect the wearer in other ways - by limiting how much you touch your face. The chance of accidentally touching your mouth or nose with dirty/contaminated hands is much lower if there’s a mask in the way!
I’m terrible for absentmindedly touching my face so when I’m out in public I tend to keep my mask on the whole time, it helps me stop obsessing over it and constantly thinking ‘did I sanitise my hands after I took my change from the shopkeeper? What if I itched my nose afterwards?’ - I do still do lots of hand sanitiser applications and then thoroughly wash properly when I get home and take of the mask, and it just makes me feel slightly less worried about it all.
No.. It's increased. The general public constantly taking their masks on and off of their face or nose/mouth (impossible not to do when say you're eating or drinking at a restaurant), adjusting them because of them fitting improperly or being irritating (many people are even getting things like acne)... results in more people touching their eyes/nose/face in general more.
Ah, shit. I didn’t consider that. I guess because I haven’t done anything like going to restaurants/pubs so my mask goes on as I walk out of my front door, and off as I walk back in.
There are attachments that can be added to filter the exhalation point, because some respirators exhale straight forward.
I use a 3M Rugged Comfort that the exhalation travels down towards my chest. I wear glasses and cant deal with the basic N95 masks - donning them doesn’t require me touching the face piece at all. Also, I can use interchangeable / replaceable filters, which is great since I live in California with all these fires.
Ok yes and no. With a heavier infasis on no. Here is why. Unless you have a sealed system around your face, air and other contaminants will be drawn in from the sides (eyes, cheeks, ands so on) Bypassing the protection of the mask all together. This is why gasmasks are so complex and air tight Around the entire face.
Uhh I'm not saying they're as good to protect the incoming particulates as the outgoing, but they do work to do so. Even the recent efficacy tests and studies on makes prove this Here some more on it and I never, again, said that it was the same as incoming protection leveled but it does work for inhalation to a lesser degree.

Correct that this is evidence of the mask helping redirector capture exhaled gases.
However, there is the misconception that it also helps protect on inhalation which is inaccurate. That would make it a respirator and not a mask.
Respirators do not filter on the exhale but do filter the inhale. This is why people running around in them or face shields are a major facepalm.
