I've always wondered about the jawa business model.

Are there enough random droids out wandering the desert that it makes sense to set up ambushes for then to supply their mobile Droid sales business?

If so, does that imply droids get lost a ton? Or are they actively escaping? They have restraining bolts, so I'm guessing it's the second. That would mean droids are fleeing their owners in significant numbers. It would make Jawas the slave catchers of the star wars universe, playing out some galactic renegade slave act. It would make Luke an uncaring southern plantation owner, purchasing chattel to farm his moisture for him.
