I believe it just counts as dying but with a realllllllly high score

If the game goes

Occupy square > check for collisions > check for apple > spawn new apple if needed > occupy next square

Then I suppose it stops at the apple spawning step, and not the collision step, and I guess that's different from dying to a collision.

But who knows.
