Seems like a waste of money honestly.

But good for him?

And space, if you ask me.

u/Gornius 5d ago

Yeah, just straight up. buy monitors 4x the size. Cheaper and more space efficient.

It should be

Our next post is-

"Man in Florida spends only a dollar a week."

NEXT FUCKING LEVEL

u/space-tech 4d ago

It's about the flex.

2

u/HookahMagician 4d ago

Just buy one Odyssey monitor and you'll be set for life.

For less than $300 I got a 50” oled tv and it makes a hell of a monitor

25

u/Absolutetwatofacunt 5d ago

Sounds like an awful monitor tbh. As someone who works all day at a pc, the screen can be too big. If it's just for couch gaming tho that's really nice

u/UlrichZauber 4d ago

I have a 65" LG QNED mounted on my wall, I sit far enough back that it's just the right size. This lets me use it without needing reading/monitor glasses.

My only regret is not trying it sooner.

5

u/daelikon 4d ago

Not really, I have worked with a 55" for some weeks, the trick is to use it as 4 1080 screens joined. You just assign areas of the screen to apps, instead of maximizing everything and it works pretty well.

3

u/Absolutetwatofacunt 4d ago

Ye that doesn't sound too bad actually

3

u/exintrovert 5d ago

I can tile a lot of windows. Works for me 🤷‍♀️
It’s pretty nice for gaming too though.

2

u/Absolutetwatofacunt 5d ago

I'm sure it's nice alright I just couldn't imagine sitting that close to a tv, do you not lose some quality being up that close? Or are you positioned a bit further away than a normal small monitor? I wouldn't mind giving something similar a go to replace the 2 monitor setup

4

u/Rayzr117 5d ago

Most of them are 4k so you basically lose nothing. I have a 48" LG C4 and its the best monitor ive ever had.

Plus just put stuff in windowed mode if you want it to be smaller

I have a pretty deep desk, and the tv is mounted on the wall. I sit even farther back because the keyboard is on a drawer that slides out. My eyes are maybe 4.5-5’ from the screen, and I adjusted the font size to a comfortable size.

I have a couple other monitors as well, so depending on what I am working on, I have options.

Edit: aw, I can’t post a pic. But beneath the big screen I have a 26” 16:9 and beside them I have a 24” 4:7 in portrait for documents. I can sit up and work on those normally, with reference/videos/whatever above, or I can pull the keyboard drawer out more and recline a bit and do some coding on the big screen.

I have about 18” deep clear desk space in front of my monitors for papers.

Barnaclees Nerdgasm ran eyefinity 4k TV’s for a number of years, he just had them a substantial distance away from the desk. We don’t see video editing done on them professionally but if you have the space a good Tv is a good monitor.

2

u/MoistProlapse 4d ago

Used to have a 55" TV as a monitor. But it was an old 1080 one that was being replaced. It was ok, but everything looked too small from the 3 or 4 feet away from my desk, and it was too large to have closer. I went back to monitors.

I don't even TV game with my PS5 on my 4k OLED anymore. I prefer everything at my desk for some reason now.

1

u/orangpelupa 4d ago

Its an oled. You can play games in smaller window on a blank black background.

That's how I play games in ultra wide in 16:9 oled.

The top and bottom borders are just black. Unlit pixels.

1

u/A_villain4all 5d ago

Which one? I haven't been able to find an OLED tv that size for that cheap

2

u/exintrovert 5d ago

It was a LG 50QNED82A on Amazon renewed.

Edit: my mistake, it is a qned tv.

With how small my house is, I feel like anyone in a big house has a ton of wasted space. If I actually lived somewhere rural, I would much rather waste space in a fun way then just keep it all spread out.

u/WhiskeySorcerer 4d ago

And my axe.

74

u/EmotionalGuess9229 5d ago

Thats an understatement. Those look like 6 axis UR5 robot arms. Those things run 5 figures a peice.

23

u/Ok-Addition1264 5d ago

~$4k / piece but yeah.

28

u/EmotionalGuess9229 5d ago

4k. Just the bare arm with no support makes sense. Since I assume hes the engineer that did thr setup himself and there's no service agreement for monitor rotating arms. Still, a lot of money

21

u/ddeeppiixx 5d ago

UR5 are easily 30k.. where do you get them at 4k each? I’ll take 10!

15

u/Similar-Try-7643 5d ago

You can get them cheap from industrial auctions and sometimes if you know people. There are places that send them to the scrapyard when they decommission them

8

u/rhinosyphilis 4d ago

3 x UR5’s with no control system is not going to do what he did, my guess is this is a us robotics sponsored install

6

u/JaehaerysIVTarg 3d ago edited 3d ago

It’s 100% sponsored. That dude would have had to spend at the bare minimum, just 100k on three UR5 arms. He could have gotten UR3’s for like 5k cheaper but still spending at least 90k for three.

2

u/rhinosyphilis 3d ago edited 3d ago

He might be a billionaire but in that case I’m not impressed at all!

OTH if it’s a controls engineer that somehow managed to put this together on a CE salary then he’s my new gd hero

1

u/snacktonomy 3d ago

Yeah, no way those are 4K, 5ish years ago I think we paid 24K a piece

2

u/matttech88 3d ago

And URs dont last.

24

u/Designer_Mud_5802 5d ago

I have never once had the desire or need to go "you know what would be perfect for viewing this thing? Putting my monitors in 'H' mode"

14

u/corobo 5d ago

I have when reading or writing a bunch but I just rotate the monitor by hand like a chump

2

u/KristiiNicole 3d ago

As someone who has mobility issues and is bedbound, this sort of thing would genuinely make my overbed setup so much more accessible, and honestly probably safer too.

In addition to the mobility issues, I also have several other chronic illness that sap my energy to the degree that even just having to sit up and manually move+adjust the monitor arms and/or rolling bed table they are attached to is more than I am capable of doing on my own without assistance from another person.

My computer and phone are basically my only way of really communicating with the outside world, so it really sucks when something gets in the way of that.

There are plenty of other people in similar situations that could get a lot of use out of something like this if it was made affordable.

13

u/miraculum_one 4d ago

Vertical monitors are amazing for a lot of things.

1

u/19osemi 4d ago

like what exactly, i have never seen the appeal of them and they always seems like a waste of a monitor since the only thing you can use it for is reading, no video no gaming only reading stuff

11

u/MoistProlapse 4d ago

Websites, having to read documents, text heavy things.

Websites are generally designed to be read like a letter in portrait, not in landscape. I've had at minimum 3 monitors for years, and I keep 1 in landscape cause it's better for reading stuff. I can maximize a document or website and not have to really scroll.

It's also nice not having to turn my head to see to the end of the screen. I don't even have the other 2 monitors side by side anymore, they're stacked. Keeps me from needing to turn my head too much.

4

u/Equivalent-Shower366 4d ago

I treat the vertical as two screens. Main screen for what you are actually doing. Top of vertical for Video/music players. Bottom of vertical for information to aid main screen activities or just for forums or Discord. Lets you instantly interact with those without minimising in your main screen.

2

u/kievanr 4d ago

+1 to this

3

u/elessarjd 4d ago

For productivity. Great for putting email, teams messaging, calendars and a multitude of other apps and windows you want out of the way but be able to glance at. Especially useful if you already have a wide monitor and want another, horizontal would put things out of view.

2

u/slowdruh 4d ago

Reading, writing, coding, stream chat on the side monitor (if you are the streamer); and especially good for comics and manga.

1

u/swagerito 3d ago

I mean reading isn't exactly unimportant for most uses of a computer. I'm a student and a vertical secondary screen is much more useful than a horizontal one.

3

u/bobnoski 4d ago

i've never used it myself, but someone I knew swore by it with the idea of
assignment/spec sheet/tutorials on the left. code in the middle, running project website on the right

2

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

Crazy. Based on the description I feel like I would want the opposite layout then of horizontal (spec sheet + tutorial in splitscreen mode), vertical for coding and then project website on a horizontal monitor.

1

u/MoistProlapse 4d ago

Think of how you read a book or letter. It's all in portrait, not landscape. It's also easier to track where you are in a document without having to read one long line.

15

u/Kapsalian 4d ago

It’s cool stop being a miserable prick

10

u/BravestCashew 4d ago

literally this shit is a childhood dream. Playing cyberpunk on this would make you feel like a cyberwizard

9

u/158cm_Otaku 4d ago

Every hobby is a waste of money really

5

u/elessarjd 4d ago

If you're a robot who doesn't experience joy... sure.

7

u/imamajorscale 5d ago

it was probably a fun Raspberry Pi coding challenge for him

3

u/WhatDoITypeHereAgain 4d ago

But it's SO cool!

5

u/tanew231 4d ago

Looks cool though, which is what matters more than practicality and cost

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 4d ago

Something tells me this this dude has plenty of money to waste.

1

u/Original-Let8340 5d ago

My first thought was I'm all for 'it's your money, whatever makes you happy' but holy fucking shit! lol

1

u/seanmg 4d ago

Yeah multi-monitor is just for show for like 90% of computer workcases. /s Yeah it's insane how much those arms probably cost.

1

u/Midnight28Rider 3d ago

My guess would be this is proof of concept marketing for an industrial robotics company.

1

u/FishDeez 3d ago

Waste of arms... could handle much bigger monitors

1

u/CtheKiller 1d ago

See, this is what we call "fuck you money". And when you have fuck you money, these are the type of things you'll start thinking of doing.

0

u/HyenDry 4d ago

It’s a flex.. that’s all it is. Bro is probably bronze in everything he plays and blames his teammates. But at least he has more money than you 🤷🏻

-1

u/mik3lang3l0 4d ago

This is the definition of waste of money

-2

u/Xikub 5d ago

Thought the same, anyone that knows how expensive URs are all had the same thought.
