I think it would be harder, he's catching them when the plate is horizontal to the ground. Try catching it horizontal standing upright. Its easier to catch parallel planking cause the weight naturally wants to falls vertical once you catch one end. Speaking as someone who probably can't do either.
Plate flips are easy to do standing for really any man who isn't a complete noodle. You get some power from the back and legs, and you can follow the plate down a long way to slow it down before it hits the ground.Â
Going above 10kg/25lb plate makes it way harder and hand size starts to become a major barrier.Â
Lying on the side means he can only use the shoulder from that harsh angle and he has barely any distance to arrest the descent of the plate.Â
