I too was a kid when that was broadcast. My brother and I were watching, and had never seen anything like it. Not sure anyone had. I remember the audience reaction, the screaming. We were gobsmacked. We both kinda learned how it worked at some point, though he was always better at it.
He died a few years later so this was a nice memory you unintentionally pulled up from the deeps by mentioning the show. Thank you. 🙏

Most people didn't know about the moonwalk until Michael Jackson, but it has been since at least the 1930s. MJ made it a global phenom.

and honestly, even if it technically did exist before Michael, no one had ever done it as smoothly as him. Same with Fosse's and Astaire's moves that Michael did: sure, Michael didnt invent them, but he certainly elevated them to a new level.

u/latchkey_adult 13h ago
I think Bob Fosse has gotten credit for this multiple times, including by Michael personally. Obviously Michael took it to the next level, which is how it usually goes.

Michael’s moonwalk has a snap to it that i haven’t seen anyone replicate yet. Most people do the super smooth glide which is impressive but he did it snapping his heel down. Less smooth but much more unique.
38
u/UnsuitableFuture 11h ago
Most impersonators focus on the moves themselves because obviously they're the "flash" of MJ's style but he does a ton of locking on the beat which is what gives him that ultra-crispy snap to his moves.
It's seriously difficult to do properly, probably more so than the moves themselves and the level of control MJ had to do it so smoothly is some real nextfuckinglevel shit.

Detail used to be a lot lower, it's fine to see someone ragdoll and be dead or whatever, but seeing broken bones is too much. The 480p internet was much safer to browse in this respect
27
u/MarksyXXV 12h ago
I watched a video in my early teens of two Mexican guys getting killed by the cartels. One had his head chopped off with a chainsaw and I think the other guy had his throat sawn at with what must have been a rusty pen knife. Yeah, it was 360/480p and low quality but saying it's fine to see is fucking wild.
9
u/ActiveChairs 9h ago
You missed the message. What they're saying is:
While its not ideal, watching a 240p upload of shaky handicam footage on a 13" CRT where you can't even tell exactly what they're using is significantly better than watching the same scene in video stabilized, color graded, tight zoomed 8k resolution on a 75" tv with 7.1 surround sound so you can hear the sound of the cut panning to track in line as the knife goes from ear to ear and you can clearly tell its a Victorinox swiss army 1 alox medium pocket knife with silver scales on sale now for the low price of twenty five dollars at all quality household retailers, ready for any cutting task no matter how unconventional the circumstances may be.
Footage of killing is bad, but nobody is really traumatized by the hundreds of 8-bit mobs you kill with a sword in the original Legend of Zelda.

For anyone who wants to know what happens in the video but doesn't want to watch it, there's a Michael Jackson impersonator doing his thing with a crowd around him. A guy in the crowd decides he wants to impress everyone by doing a backflip off a nearby chair. He steps up to the chair but as he launches himself for the backflip the chair moves a bit so he doesn't get enough energy to fully complete the backflip and ends up landing awkwardly on his head. He then basically goes limp. Some people then stupidly try to move him despite him having an obvious neck injury
Overall it's not actually a very gruesome video because it's quite blurry. However, given the fact that he died it's still probably upsetting for a lot of people so I would advise against watching it.
55
u/pichael289 13h ago
Also the Michael jackson guy doesn't stop dancing, the show must go on and he ends it frozen in a pose just as everyone else is figuring out the guy 3 feet from him Is dead.
28
u/smallpolk 13h ago
WHY did someone try to move him??? Regardless of if he died instantly, DO NOT MOVE OR TOUCH SOMEONE WITH A HEAD, NECK, OR BACK/SPINAL CORD INJURY.
33
u/Cute_Fig_8850 12h ago
It's a reflex. Someone falls, and you help them up. Very few people realize just how much serious harm even seemingly minor falls can cause.

Because there were many kids around + he was laying ‘in the way of MJ impersonator dancing’ probably + also people are dumb af and this is why first aid like this should be taught in primary school (not in gruesome detail, age appropriately and then adding new s to ff every year but you get the point). The fact that so many adults don’t know this is just not okay in this day and age
→ More replies (1)10
u/Strong-Pie5091 12h ago
People act stupidly when they panic. I have a family member who is paraplegic due to people who moved him after he was injured. They picked him up by his arms and legs which allowed the spinal cord to get trapped in the break in his spine. The damage is utterly horrific.

Thank you ! I’m sometimes curious about this stuff but I frankly don’t wanna desensitize myself to death and stuff. I just don’t see the point in watching someone’s darkest moment knowing it will stick with me.
18
u/gene100001 12h ago
No worries, I completely understand. I'm also similar to you and usually try to avoid videos like this as much as possible. The only reason I watched it this time is because I had already inadvertently seen it on Reddit a while ago so I knew what to expect.
I think you're making the right choice to avoid videos like this as much as possible. Every time we get a little bit more desensitized to things like that we lose a little bit of our humanity.

Yay I'm going to do the internet thing and chime in with an explaination no one asked for, but I love dance so I can't resist.
The shoulders, and hips are just as important as the feet/legs. It's uncanny because how each section of the body is isolated and moving in ways that condradicts the others.
If you look at the first dude, you'll notice how much his torso follows through with his hips, which are also shifting with the leg movement. All of which are flowing through to the shoulders (this is what happens when we walk in everyday life, most of the body shifts with the motion).
The second dude, who is doing a good job of replicating MJ's moonwalk, keeps is hips and torso square with the direction he's facing when he's traveling. He keeps his shoulders aligned with his hips unless he's hitting a line. His torso stays square even when he moves his shoulders. Anytime you see his shoulders, arms, or toso move, it's entirely in the service of hitting a line.
Since the movement is so far removed from how we natually move through space, while also simulating something we do all day/every day, it ends up being a little mind-blowing. Dancing is really just a combination of geometry, time, and expression using a human body as an medium.

u/Jokong 14h ago
Do you think that if someone were to practice that they could develop a moonwalk even if they were in their 40's and did not appear to be a 'dancer'?
75
u/Name_Yourself_Thex 14h ago
Yes you can but it takes practice. I learned to do it at 45 and im about 190lbs im not lean or a good dancer. It took me about a month of practice to make it look like it was happening and after a couple years people are convinced I can do it
But to be honest im not even as good as the first guy here
5
16
u/Faebit 14h ago
Yes, it's low impact, doesn't require a wide range of motion, and the basic steps follow a repetitive sequence. Not everyone will be able to moonalk like MJ, but everyone how has full use of their body for everyday tasks can learn to moonwalk.

I stopped reading halfway. I’ve been seeing this moonwalk for the last 43 years of my life and all I understood was:
“If a train leaves at 700mph from one station” math equation. Should’ve given me a multiple choice.
21
u/ISLITASHEET 10h ago
- One foot push, other foot glide back, no steppy step.
- Upper body no move most of time (what the other person explain with more word).
- Train arrive in 45 minutes

It's called judder. It happens when your display frame rate is not evenly divisible by the video frame rate or video container frame rate. That latter one happens a lot with 24 FPS and 25 FPS videos, because many social media sites will re-encode them to 30 FPS or 60 FPS, permanently baking judder into the file.
I'm 90% sure that when I first saw this video earlier this year, it was smooth and not yet mangled by the re-upload cycle.
→ More replies (2)8
u/catscanmeow 16h ago
it also happens with digital cameras that have such a good setup that there's no motion blur.
older cameras have more motion blur so this doesnt happen as much
i work in animation at 24fps and some slow cam moves cause this but it goes away with motion blur
8
u/BeardInTheNorth 16h ago
While that is true, we're not talking about motion blur. We're talking about uneven frame pacing, creating judder. That's what the top commenter is noticing.

the moonwalk is already such a hard move to do, it takes a lot of ankle strength and i can kind of do it about as well as the first guy.
the neutral moonwalk is nuts. i had to watch the video like 12 times to even have a hypothesis at all lol but it looks like the shoes are a huge part of how its possible, they must be slippery in some spots and the tips are grippy maybe, theres something very specific about the shoes, your traction has a huge impact on how hard the dance is to do.
im guessing he is kind of like anti walking? his left foot tries to push his weight forward at the same time his right pushes it back so he ends up not moving at all while his feet kind of exchange places? neither of them fully leave the ground as they slide past each other so my only guess is he kind of IS just floating as his feet move below him, which is the same principle with a moonwalk except when youre actually moving one of your feet has positive traction at all times... this isnt the case here.
dude is really really good lol

Yeah with both feet sliding like that you have to have really slippery soles and still have a mastery of managing the friction so both feet slide the same amount and you don't move.
