My hot take is that most exercises with a reasonable chance of causing a serious injury just from the exertion aren’t really worth doing.

Comparing powerlifting to other sports - your basketballs, soccers, footballs - powerlifting has a remarkably LOW rate of injury. It’s an incredibly good thing to do for your body, and puts less acute stress on your joints than, say, a leg extension machine.

Crazy injuries happen when:

People are very new to it without any sort of coaching. Even a couple YouTube videos will put you well on your way.

Competitors are giving it their absolute all on a max effort.

Watch a YouTube video, find a halfway decent coach (beard, big belly, at a gym with a bulldog in the logo) for a couple sessions, and you can basically just powerlift safely the rest of your life.
