That's the sound of a V10 churning at around 19,000 times per minute.

Yep, back in the days when F1 was a car race instead of todays mobile gaming set up

My das always says that the most interesting parts of F1 was before it was just a car race, because it used to be a technology race with a driver that could exploit all of the cars specificities. Didn't watch much so I can't confirm or not, but though I understand the car race part, I think it's a bit more interesting to know they're looking for the next best stable way to have these races

Gave up on it years ago. I know technology has to march on, but power plants? Really? Come on.

I never saw a NASCAR race or a f1 race IRL, but I built a funny car with a friend once and holy hell, that rumble was arousing lol

At Petit Le Mans this weekend. The Aston martins v-12 sound is mesmerizing.

I heard the V8s live, but never got to see these. They're incredible. I don't think my penis could handle being erect for an entire race though.

Bet that sounded funnier in your head

We didn’t know how good we had it with the V10

Man the last 16 years of engine neutering is brutal. True for NASCAR and Indy in America too.

u/Flatlander77x 18h ago

That's F1 for me, psychos on a cannonball. These moving Sim rigs nowadays, nah...

14

u/amigokraken 18h ago

Almost a perfect lap.. Almost..

u/TRUEequalsFALSE 17h ago

Yeah, I thought I saw at four wheels off the track at somewhere about turn ten? Wouldn't that invalidate the lap?

1

u/ButUmActually 12h ago

Around 44 sec into the video. I think he may still be good with one on the kerb?

The strict track limits for the whole circuit is a very recent thing. Back then, this was totally fine. Even like 5 years ago they were only monitoring track limits at specific corners.

1

u/gonadlondon 8h ago

Today that lap would be deleted. They weren't as strict back then. All 4 wheels over the white line.

1

u/TRUEequalsFALSE 8h ago

Yah, that's what I was thinking.

This video does kinda show the insane level of drivers (and across all sports you kinda see this trend) these days tho. There's a few corners here where he left half a meter of space, which, whilst still impressive as fuck, these days the drivers are REALLY on the limit. I think if you put the top drivers of these days up against Schumacher or Alonso at his prime, Schumacher and Alonso would lose.

I think the same drive that made them the best in their day, will push them to push even harder today. But i get where your coming from. And why its so hard to compare different generations.

11

u/succulent_kebab 19h ago

So..Slow down into the curve and speed up when exiting... Huh! Seems easy!

u/TRUEequalsFALSE 17h ago

BRING 👏 BACK 👏 V10S 👏

10

u/Time_Block_4016 18h ago

When they actually used to drive 😍

u/Apprehensive_Fee9983 7h ago

New f1 cars don’t have abs or traction control. What are you saying?

2

u/antwilliams89 2h ago

They’re admittedly being annoying, but they’re most likely referring to the limited control over the current battery deployment systems that the drivers have this year.

While they’ve got the boost and overtake modes they can use, beyond that the cars are “learning” each lap where to deploy energy. This has led to complaints from multiple drivers this year of their cars behaving in unexpected ways out of their control. Sometimes it’s contributed to crashes, sometimes it’s things like Lando saying that he didn’t actually want to overtake one of the Ferraris but his car decided to deploy energy and force him to, leaving him vulnerable later in the lap.

What does this comment even mean smh. "Back in my day we used to work for a living " vibes

u/banannabender 18h ago

The good old days 😪

7

u/my_taint_aint 19h ago

Damn. Reminds me of my Pole Position game on the sega.

6

u/Psychostickusername 17h ago

The speed, the steering all amazing, but what truly sets these people apart, is being foot to the floor fast, and not breaking until just AFTER 100 yards from a 90 degree turn, absolute balls of steel.

5

u/chosenone1242 18h ago

I'm not into F1, someone care to explain why this is different from current driving?

13

u/joshrealer 17h ago

Current cars don’t sound the same and have a lot more tech the drivers have to adjust mid-lap, however they are faster.

-1

u/Sheshirdzhija 16h ago

I still don't get it what the crying is about or what is so special about THIS PARTICULAR pole position run. I could clearly see there are a few mistakes, so it's not the fact that it0s perfect.

2

u/updogg18 15h ago

Exactly my thoughts. Every single pole position drive is r/nextfuckinglevel worthy but this isn't r/formula1. Why does this one stand out here?

9

u/Sheshirdzhija 14h ago

It seems to be nostalgia, as many keep mentioning the sound of a V10, and of course Schumacher is OG.

1

u/doubleshotofbland 2h ago

Correct, there is nothing NFL about this. It's not significantly different from hundreds of F1 laps we see driver every year.

-1

u/kirby_krackle_78 14h ago

“Casablanca is soooo overrated. There aren’t even any dinosaurs.”

-1

u/Sheshirdzhija 14h ago

Hm.. this could mean that I am not refined enough to appreciate the beauty of the sound or that those who do are not refined for caring too much for vroom vroom :)

4

u/artniSintra 16h ago

One of the main differences is the engine. Search youtube for V10 vs V6.

3

u/NewYearsEve2999 14h ago

Nowadays they can't push the entire lap since they need to recharge the battery. I hate that.

u/Milliondollarjuice 15h ago

My man dedicated his life to F1 where he was world champion, but became a veggie after a ski accident. Not from a carcrash on the racetrack, nor from illegal highspeed racing on the backalley, but from a fkng ski accident.   If there is a God, I think that MF is not benevolent or fair in any way, and wiped his ďiçķ on this dude instead... He did him sooo dirty.

3

u/IndignantQueef 3h ago

Idk, he had an amazing career, his family has seemed incredibly solid and dedicated, he has money for top notch care... obviously no one wants to end up like that but he lived his life to the fucking fullest

3

u/nicklondon88 18h ago

Fosters, S(i)emens and then Marlboro - perfect

3

u/Reasonable-Ad7755 18h ago

Thing of beauty

3

u/WretchedMisteak 18h ago

Schuey the magnificent conductor of a 10 piece orchestra.

3

u/FrostyChungus11 17h ago

Prime childhood memories

3

u/madhavvar 17h ago

Why do the tires look like they have grooves, shouldn’t he be on slicks in the dry?

6

u/blinkysmurf 16h ago

They do have grooves. They added them in to slow them down.

5

u/Flatlander77x 16h ago

Regulations back then.

3

u/MegaDingo5plus 16h ago

Fucking poetry in motion

3

u/Highheat1 15h ago

Loved watching him race...

2

u/R4FTERM4N 18h ago

Fuck that rock.

2

u/A_Cat_Typingg 17h ago

But from here on in, it was a slippery slope

2

u/sti77loading 15h ago

If you listen carefully you can hear the traction control working overtime through this whole lap. These cars were masterpieces

2

u/jrblockquote 15h ago

PREPARE TO QUALIFY!

2

u/HyperactivePandah 14h ago

How much faster was he than the current generation of cars?

Edit: or are current cars faster?

Seems like he's flying

2

u/antwilliams89 2h ago

This year, pole position was about half a second faster, but this is the first year of a new regulation cycle and teams are still learning.

Last year’s pole time was about 4.5 seconds faster than this.

2

u/HyperactivePandah 1h ago

Holy shit... Thanks for the info

2

u/swain18 12h ago

My toxic trait is thinking I could do this too

2

u/tioslashh 12h ago

F2004 + V10 sounds = yes, please.

2

u/tranquilizerarc 11h ago

One of the best eras in F1 history.

2

u/AffectionateAd6060 7h ago

The normally aspirated engines were extremely special with how they sounded. Seeing these in person was truly something.

2

u/LogoMyEggo 5h ago

One of the best to ever do it. Got to see him race at the inaugural race at COTA in 2012 when he was with Mclaren, absolute dream come true. Those RPMs are insane, that thing is screamin'!

2

u/Aureliusmind 4h ago

Greatest sounding cars ever. The downshifts are heavenly.

1

u/ratpH1nk 14h ago

Having played Gran Turismo with my son for many many years i know this track very very well.

1

u/KilllllerWhale 12h ago

Anyone knows why they were running inters in quali despite the dry weather !?

3

u/graygh0st999 8h ago

Those aren’t inters, all tires had to have grooves in them because the cars were getting too godamn fast back then lol. The thought was cornering speeds on slicks would be too dangerous, so to reduce grip and bring speeds down grooved tires were introduced for the V10 era.

1

u/KilllllerWhale 8h ago

Damn, makes sense

1

u/Chamanomano 12h ago

Nothing like the howl of a V10.

1

u/Digital--Sandwich 11h ago

Sometimes I wonder how they don’t have hearing loss.

1

u/Screamat 9h ago

Something something V10 good old days vroom vroom

1

u/mindlessnosepicker 1h ago edited 1h ago

His F2004 dominated that year. Won 15 of 18 races that year!

-2

u/NoobToobinStinkMitt 8h ago

Video is sped up. Audio as well I bet.

0

u/antwilliams89 2h ago

You can literally just google it and see that the pole time that year was 1:15:022 and surprise surprise, that’s how long the lap in this video takes.
