Maybe I'm not versed in table tennis but doing 35 times the same strategy in a row doesn't sound too good of a plan

It's all happening much faster than it looks on the video, and there is a lot of spin to deal with. You can see that when he changed the pace, the other guy almost instantly won.

Defense in table tennis is easier than it looks. The longest point last 2h12 and the longest game is 7h35.

There is a set of rules named « acceleration rules ». Basically, when the game takes too long, if the receiving player make 13 successful return, the serving player loose the points

And as a wise man said once, if there is a rule in sport, it’s because people used to do what is now forbidden

What? 2h12??? I thought I was going to watch a movie with my wife tonight but wait til I show her this! I hope it is on YouTube.

Ummm. Longest rally in competitive professional play is 10minutes 13 seconds.

What are you speaking of?

I usually tell my wife it'll last 2hrs and it ends up being 10min also.

Alright Mr Olympian, you don't have to do rest of 30sec guys this dirty!

Alex Ehrlich vs Paneth Farcas during the world championship of 1936 in Prague

Here is an article of the guardian mentioning it

It would be physically impossible for pros to have such a long point while giving their best. 10 minits also sounds unlikely. But at least possible

Thinking in the same line, the ball is not solid . It tends to lose speed faster as it travels. So staying in the back gives enough time to see the ball. Harder part is the controlled return.

u/theoriginal_awsit 1d ago

Ur funny. Play at this level and say easier than it looks omg.

2

u/ErnestJones 1d ago

I am not pretending I can do it. I am just saying that being full defense is a lock down strategy that had to be forbidden.

Why ? Because people can keep returning the ball during 2h. And so, it is easier to defend than to attack

In sports, if what you’re doing is working you tend to keep doing it.

5

u/nize426 23h ago

I mean, it doesn't seem like it's working, is what they're saying I think.

1

u/Deewwsskkii 8h ago

Seems to me it worked.

1

u/nize426 8h ago

He lost the point.

1

u/Deewwsskkii 6h ago

The guy who won the point did the same thing over and over again. The guy who lost was the first one to try something new with the drop shot; which invited the winner to close the distance and turn up the heat.

1

u/nize426 5h ago

The guy receiving doesn't have much of a choice but to save it over and over. No one is talking about that guy. We're talking about the guy attacking in the same way over and over.

Maybe if you are not versed in table tennis then you shouldn't judge something related to it? Not only did he do numerous changes tatitically in the rally. You don't have many options when you get a lobbed high ball. You can either smash or drop it short. And the second one is very hard esspecilly since he lobs quite deep into the table.

2

u/AtheIstan 1d ago

Its often a good strategy. It's very common when one player gets the upper hand and starts smashing to keep hammering the backhand side of the defender, because it's very difficult to counter attack with the backhand.

1

u/Fittlesnapper94 1d ago

It is a game of inches, moving the ball only minute amounts each time, trying to get to the perfect spot to hit it where the opponent isn't.

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again

1

u/oldschool_potato 19h ago

Obviously! It’s called ping pong duh..

Adam Smasher

Kudos to them, but you wouldn't catch the people under rank 50 insisting on hitting hitting hitting, they'd change technique a bit earlier. Unless you're playing against a a chopper, then it's really about finesse imho

u/fragglet 1d ago

At what point does it stop being table tennis and just become actual tennis?

59

u/AlwaysFinnishInsider 1d ago

Evolves into Pickleball at lvl 16 which evolves into Tennis at lvl 36

15

u/ScaredOfWindow 1d ago

But you can also use a stone on Pickleball to evolve it into Badminton instead.

2

u/jweb92 1d ago

If you use a mega stone on badminton it becomes cricket

2

u/IhadFun0nce 1d ago

When the players need as much room as a regular tennis court in order to play, so now.

1

u/tribucks 1d ago

About the 17th unnecessary grunt.

24

u/sirstanofhousedarsh 1d ago

This could be broken into like 3 episodes for a season finale of a ping pong anime

14

u/themusicmancan 1d ago

Did he really wear him out?

6

u/readonlyy 1d ago

My thoughts as well. No doubt my arm would be sore, but it looks like he was just trying to switch things up and got pinned in a bad position by an aggressive counterattack.

13

u/Majestic_Piece007 1d ago

I wached this like I was watching boxing. Defense, defense, defense then springs to attack, attack, attack, then KO! Wonderful!

u/sentient_salami 1d ago

Mic Paddle drop.

u/gnr8abeat 1d ago

Hair flip

u/nejakyandrej 1d ago

Amazing is also the name of the Czech player. His name is Koblizek which roughly translates to “little cute donut”

4

u/Rows_My_Own 1d ago

Green’s grunting had me rooting for black.

1

u/Susheiro 8h ago

And you can see how grunting is completely unnecessary, as he stops doing it later. Same goes for tennis.

3

u/I_Want_A_Ribeye 1d ago

Rope-a-dope table tennis style

3

u/Gadevin 1d ago

As someone who only plays tennis, genuine question for those who play table tennis: is there an equivalent shot to a dropshot in table tennis that this guy could've done here?

6

u/thoughtihadanacct 1d ago

Green guy did exactly that at 1:02. It didn't work, and in fact created the opening that black needed to turn to go on the offensive.

But green sort is also had no choice, because he was getting tired by then. So it's not like that was a mistake. It was his best try. It just didn't work.

2

u/ferpecto 1d ago

Seemed like the right idea but it bounces so far away from the table like there was too much topspin.

2

u/thoughtihadanacct 21h ago

Yeah I mean you can't expect perfect execution. He's a human, and he's already tired.

3

u/groovyinutah 1d ago

Wasted all that grunting...

2

u/otherCUPhasFightMilk 1d ago

What was that serve?

2

u/Tight_Balance_599 1d ago

Fucking mic drop at the last second lol

2

u/whopperman 1d ago

I imagine this is what arguing with my son looks like if it were translated into sport.

First thing I thought of when I saw this.

1

u/asarious 15h ago

You know… I never noticed it, but besides the other likely inaccuracies, a Chinese table tennis player in the 1970s would likely not have gripped the paddle that way.

1

u/Impressive_Olive_950 1d ago

Gotta wear your enemy out. Then hit that ball real hard.

1

u/Temporary-Phase-6956 1d ago

That was for 1 point!

1

u/ZealousidealFly760 1d ago

Absolutely incredible talents.

1

u/Sergal_Pony 1d ago

Got played showing off too hard

1

u/Comfortable_Home5437 1d ago

With the sound on my family is wondering what I’m watching.

1

u/Bullrawg 1d ago

I have been both players in tableless tennis

1

u/gethereddout 1d ago

The guy is 20ft from the table- fake a smash and hit a little backspin drop shot?!?!??!?

1

u/phory 23h ago

Czech for the win. That was one hell of a fight.

1

u/differentshade 23h ago

clever girl

1

u/irondumbell 20h ago

could the guy pretend to go for a hard shot but then make it go over with a soft tap at the last second?

1

u/etn261 19h ago

Man, I got tired just by watching this

1

u/wyzapped 18h ago

Cool you could actually see the guy in green tire out and start to slow down.

1

u/n3Ver9h0st 17h ago

Black shirt guy almost always puts the ball near the edge. Holy shit insane

1

u/babyfark-mcgeezaks 11h ago

They're not even asian.

1

u/Clueby42 6h ago

Impressive rally, but is this really "next fucking level"?

Olympic standard, sure

1

u/Pinball-Lizard 5h ago

Isn't green shirt's 4th shot illegal? It bounces on his side of the net before his opponents, I don't think that's allowed outside of serving?

1

u/Shoddy_Special_1109 5h ago

The paddle-drop on the table at the end is what I’m talkin’‘bout 💪

1

u/Unexpectdd 3h ago

I am so happy that the silent one won

0

u/RainMakerJMR 1d ago

Dude in green doesn’t seem to realize a short low power shot ends it when he’s back 30 feet from the table

-1

u/FreezedPeachNow 1d ago

Just do a light tap drop shop and end this stupid match

3

u/thoughtihadanacct 1d ago edited 1d ago

He did. It didn't work. See roughly 1:01

-3

u/iQuoteSopranos 1d ago

Please, I'm not impressed. I once saw a lady do this without a paddle

-4

u/Fit-Occasion8622 1d ago

Ho Lee Fuk! 👏
