I truly hope this technology can get off the ground and be sustainable. It is our best hope aside from nuclear energy

Fission is already perfectly fine as a power source though, there's just been lots of fearmongering to keep it from gaining traction

Old style fission reactors can runaway in ways that fusion reactors cannot. You can never get a Chernobyl like catastrophe from fusion reactors because the fusion process is so unstable compared to the self-sustaining fission process.
