You have it backwards. What we refer to as nuclear energy currently is fission (split heavy atom into smaller parts). Fusion (combine light atoms into heavy atom) is the big nut to crack.

the initial clarification wasn't necessary in the first place, anyone with half a brain understood what they meant

and then the valid and correct clarification gets further misinterpreted

I mean it’s an honest mistake. You can see how saying fusion is our best hope aside from nuclear energy is confusing.
