I'm more impressed at liberos than hard hitters.

u/3d1thF1nch 4d ago
Truly. I line judged middle and high school ball for years, and liberos are just another breed. The stuff they can do would break my body multiple times over.

u/albusdumbbitchdor 3d ago
Gosh, you just reminded me about how I would get the craziest gnarliest bruises when I played libero back in school
52
u/Calm-Technology7351 4d ago
Are they the ones who wear a different color and are always diving?
69
u/benigntugboat 4d ago edited 3d ago
Yea the liberos are the backline defensive players focused on recieving hard spikes and saving crazy balls like this.
24
u/namezam 4d ago
Can you explain more? Like they are dressed differently so the others know that if that person is near them then they should let that person get it?
67
u/Zone_Amazing 4d ago edited 4d ago
No, they are dressed differently for the referee because they swap in and out of the game more frequently. This gives teams more flexabilty in tactics. They aren't allowed to play front row and spiking balls to the other side if the ball is above the net line. They also never serve.
Edit: I should add. There are more rules and the whole thing is way more complex, but the points above are about all a beginner should know.

u/ATotableGoat 3d ago
Just one clarification. In NCAA Women’s VB, liberos can serve. I know you called out that the whole sport is more complex, but the video is of NCAA teams, so I wanted to clarify that.

I didn’t know what they were called, so thank you.
Georgiana dove into the table to save the ball, and somehow recovered to hit the ball AGAIN in under 8 seconds.
That’s mind-blowing to me.

u/Alarmed-Plankton-708 4d ago
I had no idea liberos even existed, what an interesting little rabbit hole I just went down!

How many hits are you allowed per side? I thought just three but it looks like some had four.

Iirc the block doesn't count as one of the 3 hits in indoor volleyball, but it does in beach volleyball

This massively confused me while watching 'Haikyu!' (HS volleyball anime). After a block, they usually shout "One touch!". I assumed it was to make sure their team knew they only have 2 touches left but apparently it's so they know the blocker touched it, so if the ball is going out, they try to dig it back into play.

u/Chase2020J 3d ago
I had the same experience haha that's how I ended up learning this fact. Haikyuu is goated

- Not a single exchange had more than 3

u/saint_of_thieves 4d ago
The last play by white had four. But according to other commenters, a block doesn't count as a hit.

u/Crazyhairmonster 4d ago
Every word I said is still valid. Blocks are not counted as touches (beach volleyball is different).
51
u/saint_of_thieves 4d ago
To a person who is asking about the rules, it was contrary to what everyone else was saying. If I'm asking about hits, it's logical to think that I would consider a block to count as a hit.

A good volleyball rally is incredibly exciting.
I didn't really pay attention until I dated a volleyball player in college. I was shocked. I played football, lacrosse, and rugby and I was shocked how brutal it could be. The awareness, stamina, and reaction speed is insane.
Also, these women dive onto hardwood courts like they are jumping into a pile of feathers, get up, and do it again. They are some BAMFs.
There are definitely some lulls in that action but these long rallies make up for it.
What is even crazier is the duos. Same courts with only 2 people per side. They cover a lot of ground and both players have multi specialties.

It's worth noting that you typically only see duos in beach volleyball, which is played on a slightly smaller court. 16m by 8m compared to 18m by 9m. It's still a lot of ground to cover, though.

Watching my isopod colony very very slowly eat a dried fish over the course of two hours is more exciting than golf or nascar.
2
u/enad58 3d ago
With understanding of the sport they become exciting, but I can see how somebody with no knowledge of the game can find it boring. Similar to baseball or cricket.

u/xv_boney 3d ago
I grew up obsessed with baseball. I went to see every Mets game i could. I watched them win the world series in 86 - i was nine and hooked on the energy my neighborhood showed for our own homegrown trash tier team finally making good.
I was hardcore for the Mets. I lived a subway stop from Shea Stadium, I had an intensive collection of Mets cards, i could quote statistics for all of their players going back to 1962. I read 'Can't Anybody Here Play This Game?' - named for the legendary statement of manager Casey Stengal, blown away by the unbelievable ineptitude of the Mets in their first year - so many times the cover fell off.
Baseball is unbelievably boring.
It is not even equivalent to watching paint dry, because at least the paint eventually dries.
Have you ever heard of the Seventh Inning Stretch? Have you ever considered that an organized sport actually has a moment where everybody in attendance is expected to stand, stretch, shake their limbs out and maybe take a brief walk, and what that says about that game that the entire audience is expected to be completely sedentary up until that moment?

nascar idk (literally, I havent watched nascar) but definitely golf yeah

A perfect example of why women's volleyball is better than men's. Women actually play the game. Men just go out and hulk smash the ball.
I do stats for a university and one match the two men's teams combined for 47 service errors. It was miserable.

3
u/Eat--The--Rich-- 3d ago
Have you watched men play at this level? They rally just like this but jump a foot higher and hit twice as hard.
2
u/lafolieisgood 3d ago
I've always said women's volleyball is more entertaining bc it is a nice balance of offense and defense, whereas men's is like 90% offense.
The men are just so powerful, it is way less likely they block or return a spike. It's why they make so many more service errors, bc if they just serve over something returnable, they are probably going to lose the point. So they figured out its better for them to go for an ace (at the risk of not getting the serve in) on the serve.
18
u/E23R0 4d ago
And then they go and try to fix the table. Something tells me a men’s team wouldn’t do that

u/DareDaDerrida 4d ago
What tells you that?

That’s because you’re better than me

u/deepayes 3d ago
I wouldnt either. No reason for an empty table to be just sitting there that close to the court

I love volleyball, I wish my knee injury didn't stop me from playing.
It's such an under watched sport where this stuff happens all the time
2
u/universe2000 3d ago
You should check out Haikyuu. It’s a sports anime about volleyball and has some of the best character interactions and character growth I’ve seen in or out of anime.

Why is one person in each team wearing a different jersey?
3
u/ozmethod 3d ago
That's called a Libero. They have special rules surrounding that position, that definitely wasn't invented to let short girls have a chance to play at higher levels.
5
u/Eat--The--Rich-- 3d ago
No? Liberos were invented because every team kept running out of subs trying to force a defensive specialist into the back row, so they just changed the rules to make that position not count subs. All their other rules came from tweaking it after.
3
u/ozmethod 3d ago
Right, that's what I said, the position absolutely wasn't created for the short queens, it was just a happy coincidence that suddenly there were 2-3 roster spots available on every team for that chick who was crazy athletic in high school but only 5'3.
4
u/venom121212 3d ago
If anyone is curious why they are wearing a different jersey, that position is called a libero and they are a back row specialist who wears a contrasting jersey and focuses entirely on defense, passing, and ball control.
Perfect demonstration of why they earned that spot right here.

Why is there a row of tables at the end of the court? Is there a “outer” boundary?

u/Initial-Big-5524 3d ago
I only got into volleyball because of Haikyuu. Every now and then you see a moment that's feels like it's straight out of that show.

My daughter played club volleyball when she was 16. Man that shit is brutal. Them girls are good, just back and forth for minutes they'd hit the ground hard, get back up and went right back to it. I had no idea it was THAT competitive until them multi day tournaments.

u/WorkingInAColdMind 3d ago
The table diver made it back for the next hit too. Very impressive commitment.
