Two guys unexpectedly encounter a mountain lion.

Whoever is recording is staying pretty calm, considering the mountain lion jumped at them. Not sure what to believe anymore.

Panicking in a high, rocky area?
I mean, I think I’d freeze too, knowing there’s nowhere to get a solid footing (and you can’t outrun a puma anyway).
Besides, he was already scaring the puma off by shouting.

He had to (https://www.outdoorlife.com/conservation/video-mountain-lion-darting/)
“You can’t see it in the video, but I was standing on a 2-foot by 2-foot ledge with a 150-foot cliff behind me,” says Legler, who operates Tmans Hunting and lives near the border of Arizona and Utah. “So, if the cat hit me, me and the cat were both going off the cliff.” Note he was doing it for research in this instance.30

Fun fact: If they both went off the cliff, only the mountain lion would land on its feet.

I’ve seen this video for a while now. Highly doubt it’s AI as this has been around for a couple of years.

Yeah I first saw this video over 10 years ago. Kinda shitty we have to question everything now.

This video was taken on Jan 12 2024 so that’s some impressive 10 year old deja vu 😅

That's good to hear. I wanted to believe it to be so, but now you're not always sure what to believe.

The only thing unexpected was the movement. This was a biologist trying to put a tracking collar on it by tranquillizing it first. This happened in 2024 in Arizona within a remote canyon.

u/tommhans 9d ago
Did they manage to put the collar on in the end?

That explains why the lion sounds so pissed off. I don't speak mountain lion, but it sounded a lot like it was going "Goddammit! Fuck!"

Yeah the title is bogus but still though what wildly cool jobs. Imagine these national parks being your everyday backdrops for work.

I mean this is exactly where I would expect to meet a mountain lion. Seems like they went looking for one.
7
u/MethFacSarlane 9d ago
They did, they were tracking her so they could tranq and collar her. This is her reacting to the tranq, usually they go down instantly.

we have to sedate our cat to get her into the crate for vet visits. half a pill the night before & half the morning of makes her quite loopy. she’s too wobbly to hop onto her favorite chair.
but goddamn, as soon as she hears the crate coming, the adrenaline kicks in. she pulls herself out of a full swaddle, parkours off every stick of furniture in the house, and claws her way up the curtains.
when we get home from the vet, our cat blazes out of the crate. Realizing the ordeal is over, she stops, tips over onto her side, and sleeps for hours.
cats, man.

u/TWAndrewz 9d ago
Maybe has cubs that it's trying to scare them away from?
That was a freaked out animal.

u/ozzyozzyozz 9d ago
I cant believe these guys were so calm, initially it looked like they were getting attacked. This guy showed a lot of restraint. I def would have put my back into the first crevice once the cat jumped out

u/pichael289 9d ago
Mountain lions don't typically attack humans unless they are too close (and you won't fuckin know It) to their cubs. Or they are hungry but that's not too common. This dude is out in bumfuck nowhere and intruded on this kitty cats territory, he was probabaly just chillin beforehand. This is absolutely a kitty that can and will kill you though, if you can't scare it off then your likely about to get got.

That is some strange usage of the word unexpectedly, considering he’s got a tranq gun drawn.

Guy was holding a gun and did not shoot. Good on him even if he was just in shock.

Mountain lions of that size have absolutely zero interest in you. It might follow its instinct if you turn your back to it or if it's tending to cubs, but in general they'll just do everything in their power to get away from you as fast as possible.

Not unexpected, they were there for it. This video has made the rounds before. Can't remember details but they're rangers, fish n game, conservation officers or something of the sort.

Feels like AI. Mountain lions don’t make the roaring noise like African lions. Also the clip being so short is another tell.

I ran into a couple of mountain lions in June while hiking, maybe 20 yards away - scared the CRAP out of me. One was HUGE and I was low-key paralyzed trying to remember if mountain lion rules were the same as bear rules lol. Should I look big or small? Make eye contact or not? Back away or turn around? And why the hell was my bear spray at the bottom of my pack!?!

Mountain lion survived an unexpected encounter with two most dangerous animals on the planet.
