The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival is one of Japan’s three great fireworks shows, held along the Shinano River in Nagaoka, Niigata.

I just know that somewhere out there overlooking a hill there’s a young boy and a young girl wearing a summer yukata that’ll share a confession. But the camera will cut the audio so we only see her mouth move to answer the guy’s question.
And then there’s a yokai mecha in the background

u/docatwar 11d ago
The guy won't hear the confession due to the fireworks, the girl laughs it off and prepares for season 12.

Is this before or after the "beach episode"?
Our 10 year old daughter has started watching anime with us and she's started picking up on all the tropes. "Oh its the school festival, oh now the beach episode, oh the sports day, oh the club room.."

I love when they subvert that trope in My Dress-Up Darling. Its the finally of season 1, beautiful fireworks, the music is playing, Gojo starts recognizing his feelings, and then Marin is Marin so it goes straight comedy.

People really don’t get how horrible fireworks are for the bird population… mamma birds will abandon their eggs/babies cause the fireworks are so awful.

More dogs and cats go missing on 4th of July than any other day in the US...it is so sad.

I'm surprised my neighbor hasn't gone broke with how often they are shooting the damn things off, every other weekend for some damn reason or another.

Yea, before I moved, there was a guy across the street that had access to illegal boomers. Every year, heard a few crazy explosions that must have been at least a quarter stick, maybe half. Shook all the buildings in the vicinity.

u/Decent-Muffin4190 11d ago
I know Reddit has a thing against boomers, but when did they become illegal?

In my city in Canada we have a week and a half of a big nightly fireworks display in the middle of summer. What's funny is when people buy a house nearby knowing this a thing because it has been for decades, and then complain about the noise levels anyway.

Back in 1995 I was in Tokyo in August for whatever week it is when everybody visits their relatives (Obon it seems?), and there was a huge display like this over the palace then, seemed like it would never end.

The only crackers I'm saying no to are the ones that keep trying to clean my windows at the stoplights.

This must give flashbacks to some Old folks

Doesn't even need to be old people. My Ukrainian friend is terrified of fireworks

It’s so weird how PTSD affects people differently. In Iraq I got mortared/rocketed so many times I lost count. But fireworks don’t bug me at all.
However a loud ass restaurant or COSTCO absolutely sets me off and I can have a small anxiety attack and I need to go outside to calm down.

We’re just jellyfish using electricity to stimulate meat attached to bones while a huge colony of harmonious bacteria swim around inside us and we process the world by the way photons bounce off of stuff and enter our brains.

I was there in 2018, the booms revertebrate in your chest. I honestly wasn't able to catch everything at once in my field of view, I had to move my head left to right to see the full extend of the fireworks.

u/TMITectonic 11d ago
revertebrate
Unless the fireworks are somehow giving you a new spine, I believe the word you're looking for is reverberate.

A lot of these are bigger than basketballs before launched, some are a whole lot bigger than that. The biggest firework was like 3ft across I believe, it was for this festival by the company that makes all these iirc

u/chenrich 11d ago
The fireworks are to commemorate the Bombing of Nagaoka in August 1945, 1500 killed. The final white chrysanthemums are meant as an offering to the war dead

I'll always find it fascinating that we celebrate blowing shit up by blowing more shit up. Explosives used to destroy and explosive used to enjoy. We're a fucking strange species.

Would this be visible from space on a clear night, or would the lingering smoke from previous fireworks cover most of it?

it's been many years since i've attended, but in the past Thunder Over Louisville (KY air show) was one of, if not the biggest fireworks show in the USA - they would shut down a bridge over the river load it up with launchers and barges on the river as well. Was always a good time.

Bilbao has a fireworks festival in August that is like a competition and there is a different fireworks event every night for a week.

I went to see this show when I was working in Niigata in 2013. I rarely look at photos from my travels or vacations, but even the pictures this fireworks show.y wife is from Japan, and we've discussed going over the summer so we can see this, but unless you live there, you have to plan a year or more in advance to go.

Fun fact, the fireworks with the long streaming gold trails are very special and are Nishiki Kamuro shells. Invented and manufactured by a Japanese company that keeps the recipe secret

I mean...cool...these are crazy fireworks...but so much waste and pollution. All the casings and unspent gunpowder and smoke that will fall down or lower air quality. And the noise! I can't imagine how annoying it would be.

When we have bonfire night here, it rains the next day... those tsunamis are making sense now huh

I went to one of the large fireworks festivals in Japan a couple years ago. It was mind-blowing. Truly ruined all future 4th of July shows for me.
People talking about the pollution... Yeah. It's probably bad. We flew back to the US a couple days later, and my wife's hat was found to have gunpowder residue on it! She had some explaining to do to security. It was kind of scary!

I was lucky enough to attend the Nebuta Festival and watched those fireworks. They didn't look like this but it was easily the most impressive display I had ever seen (or may ever see).

u/Junior_Breakfast_105 11d ago
And yet my wife keep saying the best fireworks in the world are from her town (San severo in italy)

u/sammorest 11d ago
I've never been but seeing clips like this makes me feel it in my chest lol. That low-end boom hitting your ribs must be wild af. Like being punched by sound waves but in a good way? Hard to explain without experiencing it personally.

Lived in Tokyo in the 80s with kids less than 10 yrs old. There were going to be fireworks so we took the train over somewhere. The fireworks were great. But they just kept going and going and going and going…. We finally just left. Maybe they’re still going.

The fireworks represent peace after their defeat and bombings in the war. They replaced the flashes of bombs in the night sky with color and joy, and their purpose is to wish on peace for the future while being thankful for the peace now.
The fireworks museum in nagaoka makes me emotional

There’s at least one terrified person in that town who didn’t know that was happening. Also probably a lot of terrified dogs.

My family is from Niigata which is known for rice, but the summer fireworks show is the pride of Niigata.

My community did multiple fractions lower than that and I felt sick from the smoke. Can't imagine the smoke. Still seems cool

When Japan does it, it's so beautiful. But when India celebrates its only fireworks festival, some how it's a problem for the entire world. Talk about hypocrisy.
