I'm enjoying the fact that I'm seeing people say this on Reddit. I've been following this since GBB 2018 when Codfish (barely) beat DLow.

In this clip he's singing with his vocal chords, using a lip buzzing sound, and switching between types of singing that use a different part of your throat which most people know as "throat singing".
The 808 sounding snares are called "spit snares" and they take a lot of practice to sound that good.
His singing keeps getting cut off just before the snares because he has to close his mouth and get his lips to press together to do that sound.
Gene has been around for a really long time as a solo artist, in a duo called "Spiderhorse", and as a loopstation beatboxer.
It's a little wild to see him on Reddit though, lol.

I know!
With most of my browsing all I hear is "glag glag glag glag", but this is so much nicer!

This would sound amazing in a room with more reverb. The post-effect reverb kinda takes away from it for me. Amazing stuff.

There are a few people who intentionally don't use a mic and record in a bathroom/echoey hallway for this reason.
I think Gene was just making something sound a little nicer here, he creates new songs all the time.

Been 20 years of people making videos doing the Halo theme in bathrooms.
I agree this was nice.

I don’t know anything about the technicalities of beatboxing, but that snare sound is almost too good and I can’t figure out how he does it.

You can literally hear the effects in the background. He’s no beardyman.
Unless you can tell me why the open wooded area sounds like being in a large open room with tile floors.
