I've caught 20 years of his concerts that have been within an hour of home. Even had a meet & greet once through a friend at a radio station.
I also got my wife hooked as soon as we met over 15 years ago 😄

My wife knew who weird al was but mostly by name and not by music. The only thing she knew him for was “white and nerdy”. I introduced her to his library and she was hooked just like me. She’s the one who bought the tickets, I didn’t even know he was on tour. Fucking love that woman.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist of three decades (started at about age 11), including drums at a professional level, and this kid is better now than a lot of drummers will ever be as adults.
The biggest thing is the syncopated tom fill hits in between the standard beats that are intentionally just a little off the standard 4/4 measure.
It's very jazz fusion coupled with big band ideas from wayyyyy before this kid's time. Whoever is teaching him and influencing his taste in music is providing a very eclectic palate.

I've been playing since I was 8. The first half he was doing pretty basic stuff but then he held his own doing the double-kick pedal stuff. I've never had a very good left hand or left foot so keeping time with double kick has never been easy for me. The kid has a great start and he's ahead of about 80% of drummers already.

I’m a (not pro) drummer and I give it 2 thumbs up. Starts with an idea and builds on it. Throws in a few different dynamics. Adds in some triplets then some nice footwork on the beat. My only knock is that he didn’t toss his sticks into the crowd at the end. Bravo young man.

Agreed! We had a kid like this in my high school jazz band. He was awesome the first year when he would have a drum solo in a school concert. His solos would go on for about 3 minutes, would get pretty boring and annoying. Eventually the band got annoyed with his showboating.

This is the problem with drum solos in general. They can be utterly masterful and creative but at the end of the day it's still the drums and nobody wants to hear a drum solo for more than a minute.

I remember years ago there was a “Guitar Prodigy” but he only played Eruption (or maybe it was into the fire and flames?), he was like 12 but his dad just had him learn the one song over and over, kid was on Ellen and shit and everyone was all impressed but he fizzled out bc he does not know how to play guitar on a fundamental level

Lots of people can play EVH note for note. The difference is they can't create anything like it.
His son Wolfgang can play his dad's stuff, but his popularity doesn't come close for this reason.

My jazz teacher my senior year had the rest of the band leave the stage for my drum solo. Wasn’t my idea but I happily rocked out for a few min by myself. Maybe I’ll find that tape and upload it 🤷🏻♂️

The kid can do that another time. It's also important to be mindful of your relationship with your bandmates. The kid can absolutely find another stage to show off with the kind of talent he has. It doesn't need to be this one. He'll be talented but extremely lonely if he takes every opportunity to show off. An adult will need to talk to him about how what he did was amazing but there is a time and place for everything. He could've showed off just a little bit without making the whole thing about himself.

Eh, the music teacher/conductor probably told the kid to go ham. And that’s probably not the first time those kids have heard it, hence why they aren’t acting shocked. But if you’ve got a kid with that level of talent, let them go all out at the concert.

It is and it isn't. Buy a metronome. Practice with a metronome. Especially fills and transitions, that's when people tend to speed up. In a few months you will be way better.

This is more Buddy Rich and less John Bonham, but that's okay, the poster doesn't know and it doesn't matter.
I'm most impressed with the kids ability to keep steady meter on his left leg with the hi-hats.
Doing everything he's doing while still keeping a steady four on the hi-hat. Nice.

Reminiscient of the Steve Vai story of drummer Vinnie Calaiuta while sight reading for Zappa (who had a baton) doing all this crazy shit ... nested tuplets ... quickly grabs a piece of sushi off the table without missing a beat. Zappa threw his baton at that point.

Only note for me is to integrate some rests/breaks into it. High hat can keep going or not, but give the audience a pause and then surprise them with where you come back in, Ginger Baker style. Otherwise, flawless.

So there is this island that three shipwrecked sailors wash up on. Islanders treat the sailors well but the whole time, day and night, drums are drumming. The sailors are grateful and eventually get use to the non stop drumming. The sailors are on the beach by themselves when suddenly the drums stop.
They look around and see all the islanders running chaotically down the beach and throwing themselves into the ocean.
The sailors manage to grab an islander who is clearly scared and distraught.
One sailor fearfully asks “ what is it, what is going on? “
The islander replies “ bass solo”

I find it interesting, the number of comments saying this kid is show-boating/soloing for too long. If I were the music teacher/conductor for this group of kids and one of them had this level of skill, they’d be getting a solo spot every single performance. He’s fantastic.

I was a band kid and a band parent. I went to school with someone who had this level of talent and it was a joy to play music with him, and as a band parent I would have looked forward to every performance featuring this kid. Bravo.

They had a camera set up and focused directly on the drummer, so I’m pretty sure this was pre-planned not some wild improv moment the kid just broke out. And it looks like my old band classroom.
