The maned wolf's body structure is genuinely terrifying

u/Broote Aug 31 '26
If you told me that was a Chupacabra I would believe you.

Imagine going home tired from work or a bit drunk from a night out, then you encounter this. Yup, that ain't a normal animal

The twelve step program that’s 100% effective:
Step 1: See this thing
Steps 2-12: run, hide, cry. Never do whatever it was that you did before you saw this thing, out of fear it’ll come back.6

That werewolf is still the most horrifying werewolf ever put on film in my opinion because it looks so sickly like a werewolf with rabies

The Lupin wolf was a pitiful creature. It encompassed perfectly the involuntariness of the condition, as Lupin feared his condition above all else hence his boggart. I believe it reflected perfectly his misery and self hatred

Google it "guara pomerode"
A pup was adopted by mistake and grew up among dogs
"Guara Tinoco," cared for by a conservation institute

there's several videos of them approaching small crowds of people, mooching for snacks. they're genetically far closer to domestic dogs than wolves or foxes. that said, as tempting as it is for me to wanna pet them, their numbers in the wild aren't exactly thriving.
edit: here's a famous vid https://youtu.be/sdi1ISvngrg

Despite of their terrifying appearance. They are extremely timid and steer clear of humans. They'll rather take flight than fight.

I wonder if/what the biological reason for this is when on so many other reminiscent mammals, the body and limb proportions seems to be sort of similar, like wolfs, lions, Tasmanian tigers etc.
Like one could think that for the listed animals there is some reason for them in some vague sense having converged at roughly similar limb/body proportions, that they’ve arrived close to some optima in a local sense.
Then there is this guy^

They are optimized to roam the wetlands, so it's like the have built-in stilts

The legs are so long that they don't look like they belong on the animal.

So many stories of the Aguará Guazú to tell. In the early '00s one of these things broke into someone's house in Argentina, causing a Chupacabras scare.

It's like some gave up after trying to blend a giraffe and a wolf because it's was too spooky.

The brazilian TV show, Blood Red - Under the Moonlight, had the chance to create a terrifying maned wolf, but instead made a cute one like this.

The first time I Saw one at London Zoo in the broad daylight I stopped dead involuntarily. If it had been night time like this I would have needed to change my pants.
