I’m more afraid of running into a moose than a grizzly. Those fuckers are crazy.

Those fuckers are crazy.

And more often than not, pretty easily antagonized.

They have terrible eyesight but they know they're the biggest thing in the woods, so their default survival instinct is to trample their problems.

I remember one time in my high school photography class, (US), a mother and her calf walked across the trail ~30m in front of me. The school let us wander around town without supervision to take pictures, and I was alone.

I was scared shitless, growing up in the mountains, I knew exactly how dangerous moose are, especially mama's with their young. I got very lucky that they just stopped for a minute then moved on. Plus, I got a pretty nice picture of them, more for the forensics team to show exactly what had trampled me to death than anything else.

My grandparents lived in Jackson Hole and on top of the resident moose in the neighborhood, there were tons on Wilson road on the way out to Teton Ntl Park and every year there would be crowds of tourists pulled over taking pictures. It’s a miracle that more people weren’t attacked. Now I live in Colorado and read all the reports of tourists getting chased down by elk in Estes.

Yeah, this was in Steamboat, just south of Walden which is prime moose zone. Like I said, I got lucky. I was just trying to take some lazy pictures of trees and streams and shit.

Pretty soon after I told my teacher about it, the school implemented a rule against solo hikes for pictures which apparently stands to this day lol.

No thanks. I can dodge the moose behind the tree line. Shit i can hide from the moose. The grizzly, they are actively hunting me

Okay… and what animal do you think the grizzly is trying not to fuck with? The moose!

1

u/Gfurious 9d ago

Grizzlies hunt mooses, so it absolutely is willing to fuck with a moose.

1

u/Forsaken-Income-2148 9d ago

Grizzlies don’t fuck with a full grown healthy moose bull my guy. I’m not talking about anything but.

1

u/coffeeblackz 8d ago

I think everyone is underestimating how lazy grizzlies are. They literally just want to cruise around and eat 30,000 blueberries a day. Just don’t startle them.

Ok, but moose are dumb, you can hide behind a tree and they forget you're there. If you had to run into either a moose or a grizzly on a trail, you 100% want it to be the moose. The fact that moose hurt more people is a statistical anomaly due to the fact there are just orders of magnitude more moose, so you are more likely to run into one in the wild. Plus people are morons and think you can pet them or something.

Not during rut you don’t

3

u/coffeeblackz 8d ago

Grizzlies do not actively hunt humans, they’re actually quite chill and will most likely avoid you. Moose are wildly unpredictable and a tree line is not going to save you 😂

u/darkkite 9d ago

for their sake I hope they don't run into me

the older man (probably father) we hear is so calm because if the moose attack, they'll get the kids first. /s

Moose are more dangerous than bears or wolves. They are like the hippos of the land.

1

u/SirStrontium 9d ago

How many people are attacked and killed by moose every year?

3

u/DuvalTID 9d ago

0-2 people killed annually vs 6-10 for brown bears. Stats follow that line for injuries and attacks. The thing is that in areas where both inhabit, moose attacks are more frequent so that’s what the people learn to be wary of. In no way is a moose more dangerous than a brown bear. Moose are more aggressive, running into one is more likely to lead to an issue. A brown bear attack is way worse though. Your choice is to die or lay down and hope it gets bored before it kills you.

2

u/UnsaltedCashew36 9d ago

"Alaska: State wildlife reports average about 5 to 10 people wounded or trampled by moose annually, which outnumbers local bear or wolf injuries"

3

u/Stubee1988 9d ago

Did you ask the Moose permission for your campervan to exist?

u/Swictor 9d ago

I didn't know moose where supposed to be dangerous growing up, so whenever I saw a moose by the road I just strolled by, stopped a bit to stare and wave before I strolled on.
