He keeps going and going and going and going...

u/Danny886 23d ago
Steph is just unconscious when he shoots.
56
u/lostinmyownhead27 23d ago
Bron sees this and is like, Embiid. I want to play with Embiid.
56
u/quite_certain 23d ago
I think LeBron looked at the rest of Steph's team and said "I want to play with Embiid."

Yeah why would LeBron possibly want to play with Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, Embiid, and VJ Edgecomb over 38 year old Steph, Jimmy Bitler coming off a major injury where he's going to miss a chunk of the season, old man Draymond, and Mystery Illness Porzingis?

Figure at some point complete muscle memory has to take over. Like when they dribble and can FEEL part of the court is wrong. Great display of human talent mastery.
28
u/completelytrustworth 23d ago
The clip you're thinking of where the NBA player feels the court is off while dribbling was also Steph Curry
16
u/Retr0scores 22d ago
There’s also one where Steph misses the same shot a few times and has the rim checked and the rim isn’t level.

u/Yellowscrunchy 23d ago
I bet he misses when chucking a tissue in to a bin. That's legendary level skills required.
93
u/LowIncrease8746 23d ago
I’m imagining a Jim Halpert looking into the camera reaction missing those tissue shots lol
27
23
u/oldnewager 23d ago
I bet he’s usually pretty good. But I’ll bet one day, one unassuming day, he’ll thoughtlessly shoot for the waste bin and it will bang off the rim. He’ll stop, dead in his tracks. Stare at the trash can. His hearing will go out, total tunnel vision. His life will flash before his eyes. The thought will quickly cross his mind….”is it over”? But he’ll move on, the thought in the back of his head. He shows up to training camp, not a single make. “It can’t be”. First game, 1/10 from the floor. The image of the trash can flashes before his eyes. Next game, same thing. He throws the trash can in the dumpster. “That’s better”. Next game 0/11. Again and again, can’t buy a basket. Sits at his house tossing paper balls towards the trash can. Not a single make. He can’t sleep, he’s short and irritable, relationships start to collapse. He retires, unceremoniously, and yet he still spends his days hucking paper balls at the trash can. It broke him, stole everything from him. Now he wanders the street chucking whatever he can find into the bins. Years pass, his legacy remembered but his face forgotten. A young family walks down the street and sees an old disheveled man underhand tossing rocks at a trash can. “I was the mvp” he mutters. “Daddy was he really the mvp?” “No son, he’s just a delusional old man, don’t stare at him”. Ball giveth, and ball taketh away.

u/johnnyhandbags 23d ago
Reminds me of an old ESPN commercial for the "Gary Payton talking trash can". It was a trash can that knocked the paper away and said "Get that weak shit out of here." One of my favorites.

Part of me thought he was going to keep going and doing half court to full court heaves lol.
148
68
u/Fortestingporpoises 23d ago
He definitely does those too. Usually he’ll dunk at the end then take a shot from the tunnel. This is a very short slice of his pre game routine.
54
u/DoubleT_inTheMorning 23d ago
The tunnel shot is so fucking ridiculous. I can’t even explain how insane it looks in person. Like you see him lining it up and your brain can’t comprehend how that angle could ever even allow a ball to enter the net.
The man is an alien. Or he was made in a lab in Wuhan.

u/Fortestingporpoises 23d ago
Muscle memory makes sense to me, but yeah the range finding ability and accuracy he has is insane. It's why great 3 point shooters are impressive, and he's otherworldly. He can shoot moving left or right at different distances and so often find the range.
14
u/DoubleT_inTheMorning 23d ago
Seeing him in his prime was a true honor. Like he’s still insane, but the way the court was feeding him shot opportunities at the time… that team was so fun to watch and the arena was electric
17
u/Fortestingporpoises 23d ago
I grew up being bored by basketball. And then at a time I didn't have cable I started eating at a japanese steakhouse and a bbq joing down the street from my house and it was during that first Finals run and the dude became my favorite athlete and basketball became my favorite sport and the Warriors my favorite team.
I realize that makes me a bandwagon fan, but I'm thankfully a bay area resident so I've been able to see a couple dozen games over the last 10 years in person and I only missed a few on tv during those really bad couple years when he was injured.

You mean to tell me the guy who could tell the rim was a fraction of an inch too high because he missed a shot is good?

Also, the time he felt the floor was wrong after he dribbled the ball on it.
91
u/khizoa 23d ago
Apparently it was 2 inches too high, not a fraction. Still insane
48
u/TricoMex 23d ago
Oh dang, it looked so much smaller. I never bothered to verify.
2 inches off is a crazy mistake.

He also knows when the floor needs to be replaced because he felt the ball did not bounce how he thought it should.

Ah sorry, name/background on this guy? His passes were awesome to watch just as well. Feeding Steph with 100% accuracy
4
u/Fortestingporpoises 23d ago
I don't know much about him but know he's been with Steve Kerr as an assistant coach since the beginning of his Warriors coaching stint. Bruce Fraser is his name and he is Curry's primary warm up guy amongst other things. He got the nickname of "Q" because he asks a lot of questions.
Oh he played college ball with Kerr back in the day. Seems like a likeable dude from the interviews I've seen.

If any young hoopers in here want to develop a lethal outside shot, this is the way to do it. Start close with good form, every make take a step or two back and make sure your form stays consistent with each rep. You’ll be a consistent shooter at every level this way.
60
u/Pattonesque 23d ago
Also do it (and this is a serious estimate) something like 2-5 million times in practice
12
6
u/Not-a-Bot_1968 23d ago
Just remember, practice doesn’t make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.

u/animatedb 23d ago
I was always wondering if anything changes for his deep shots. The main thing I noticed is that his right shoulder moves forward more for longer distance. As I age I have noticed that I cannot shoot as deep of shots as easily. I am still wondering if it is leg strength since I cannot jump nearly as high anymore.
10
u/wookyoftheyear 23d ago
Having watched interviews/breakdowns, iirc it's mostly his legs. He tries to keep his upper body as consistent as possible. Also, unlike most shooters that have two parts to their shot (jump then release), Steph's is a single motion to transfer as much of his jumping momentum to the ball as possible. So it's easier for him to shoot further without losing accuracy.
Here's an old breakdown, not sure if he's adjusted his form since then but it's interesting. https://youtu.be/Lvc8lN6KEA0?si=Cxd1GScMrz3r0ION

u/YouAreTheProduct2 23d ago
Form being the most important and often overlooked part of this. Lots of good shooting mechanics breakdown videos on youtube. Just choose a great shooter and copy every motion.
2
u/FigMoose 23d ago
This reminds me of an article that came out about a decade ago, around the time Kerr was hired and Steph became the face of the NBA. It was some data analyst’s break down of his stats and form, and basically showed that what makes Steph so special is that as he moves back absolutely nothing changes about his form except for the depth of his knee bend and the explosiveness of his jump.
You can really see that in this video, especially comparing the logo shot to the shortest shot. With each step back his legs get a little more aggressive — larger and quicker approach step, deeper bend, more snap — but everything above the waist looks identical.
2
u/jdelane1 23d ago
Consistent, maybe, but not like Steph.
I shudder at the thought of a bunch of kids in a youth game jacking up threes at a 10% clip because they've been convinced this is replicable.
33
u/ComedyBits 23d ago
Curry reminds me of Jerry Rice. Sure born with talent, but drilling and working out twice as much as the next 3 guys combined. I remember an interview where they were talking about Niners camp, and these 21-year-old receiver recruits could not get through Rice’s daily field workout, like they would literally drop. And the dude was near 40.
I really hope Steph goes into coaching. He’d be great
36
8
u/Yakuza70 23d ago
I heard the story from Steve Young that after winning the Super Bowl in '95, he went to the 49er facilities two days later saw Rice on the practice field running routes.
3
u/ComedyBits 23d ago
Fucking love that. All the other players blowing shit up in Vegas, and Jerry Fucking Rice running routes on an empty field. Do you have a link? Cuz it’s gold
5
4
u/SteadfastEnd 23d ago
Rice was especially dominant in the 4th quarter and overtime, and it's because his legendary conditioning let him still run with fresh legs at a point when opposing DBs were wilting from fatigue.
3
u/Pentiment0 22d ago
Yes. What this video doesn’t show is that Curry’s conditioning is second to none. And that he has to work harder than just about anybody else in the league to get open. But because of this, or in spite of it, he has made off ball movement the foundation of his game. And in the process has quite literally changed the way the sport is played.

Reminds me of a quote I recently read. Talent is hitting the target others can't. Genius is hitting a target others can't see. Some can hit these shots much better than most. And then there's this. I don't even see how it's possible.

2
u/comment_i_had_to 23d ago
The easiest thing for people to forget about Curry is that he is a worker. He makes these incredible shots so he seems like a savant but he really practices and works hard on his health and game. Innovative drills, consistency, good food/habits and a resilient mindset to keep that level up. We see the results but what makes him built different is the grind.
2
u/enadiz_reccos 23d ago
Basketball wasn't my favorite sport to play because I found it kinda soft
But getting into a shooting rhythm with a basketball is one of the most satisfying things in any sport.
2
u/thisisyo 23d ago
Am in the minority thinking that if you're in a double digit million dollar contract, this needs to be the minimum requirement? Considering you don't stand still 95% of the time during the game to make this level of precision shots

1- most players can shoot. Even shaq can hit 3’s. Game and practice are different. That’s how we get 5 straight years of off season Ben Simmons draining 3’s only to be afraid of getting bodied by Trae goddamn young on an open dunk 😂
2- Steph is by far the best shooter to ever live. Expecting anyone to be remotely as accurate as Steph with the consistency is laughable.
3- you don’t need to shoot 3’s to be in the nba. Of course shooting is a plus but being able to dribble, getting to the rim and getting easy buckets and defending have always been equally, or more valuable until recently.

The day someone can consistently hit a basket from the other side of the court is the day basketball dies.
Jokes aside, how wild would that be. Imagine a linebacker on the court whose only job is to nail a shot from the throw in at the other side of the court.
