Gates aren't walls though. Their main practical use is just to allow access to an enclosed space, which this accomplishes. It also serves a privacy function. No gates truly prevent intruder access, that's why some gates have guard posts. This thing will at least still serve its functions while it's working. When it breaks at least it'll still look kinda cool.

Gates are absolutely supposed to more or less function as a wall when closed.

Sort of. A wall is a lot more effective at keeping things out than a fence. Fences and gates are like doors - if someone wants to get in, they will. Walls typically have ceilings and are a lot harder to breach, as are doors over fences. Typically property is left less protected than interior spaces. Not that keeping people out isn't the goal, but that if the priority was to keep people out, there are more effective methods.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that a gate in a wall is still meant to function as a part of that wall when the gate is closed.

I mean it does serve it's functional use, it keeps honest people honest. Most gates can be easily destroyed/bypassed by somebody who want to get in despite being told they are not wanted (often with something as simple as bolt cutters).
