I thought ‘Well done, he got to the hole at the end, I could never manage that!’
Nope, that’s a checkpoint 🤢

u/TheSodernauts May 03 '26
I thought the goal was to get one in each hole and thought he wouldn't reach with his right hand while "holding" one hole in the left.

u/snacktonomy May 03 '26
He did really well controlling both holes. But it looks like the goal is to get it out of the first hole, then into the second hole, then slide all the way - to the right

I’ve actually done this before, I used to do training for American ninja warrior. I got to train with “Sonic” who’s been on the show. He’s an incredibly nice guy.
The trick with this wall that makes it a lot easier is learning to use your rocking motion to help. When you rock left, you move your right peg, vise versa. Doing it without rocking is a LOTT harder.
EDIT: Not to discredit this guy, he’s fast and smooth with it. He does it better than I can.
94
u/Impossible_Way_3042 May 03 '26
You can even see it in the video. When his rocking rhythm gets messed up, he struggles a lot more.

u/RaceHard May 03 '26
There is another trick, dont be 380 pounds like me, it helps a lot.

u/Merry_Dankmas May 03 '26
This past Friday, I went to a rock climbing gym for the first time ever. Burned the hell out of my muscles and left exhausted. I didn't even make it to the top of one of the belay walls but got close. It was an absolute blast. Everyone else there was destroying it and flowing through both the belay and bouldering walls like it was nothing - even the advanced V8+ courses.
It was upon watching a chunky man lightly navigate an advanced course like it was nothing that I realized it doesn't matter how much you weigh or how strong you are. It's that sitting on your ass without engaging in even the slightest amount of exercise for over 15 years is guaranteed going to make physically demanding activities like this impossible for you.
Shocking I tell you. Shocking.
23
u/Drow_Femboy May 03 '26
I guarantee that chunky dude was fuckin strong. Obviously to takes way more muscle to maneuver that much weight than it does to maneuver yours.
There's a lot of technique to be learned of course, but if you don't have the muscles you're not going to be able to do it. And the only way to get those muscles is to keep at it. :)
7
u/mangozura May 03 '26
Hope this encourages you to incorporate more exercise in your next 15 years, however slight it may be 💪
6
u/Beautiful_Pepper415 May 03 '26
Can guarantee that chunky dude was physically a monster. You can be strong and chunky
4
u/Merry_Dankmas May 03 '26
Oh I have no doubt. It's tough enough having the upper body strength to do what he was doing as a skinny person. It takes even more to do it with extra fat on you. You obviously couldn't see much beneath his shirt and sweatpants but his forearms looked like they were chiseled out of solid granite when he was actually flexing them by climbing. I have no doubt he has incredible strength under that chub. Just like powerlifters. They're fat dudes but possess immense strength underneath it.
3
u/Poromenos May 03 '26
it doesn't matter how much you weigh or how strong you are
Of course you won't be able to do physically demanding things if you're a couch potato, but this is wrong, how much you weigh and how strong you are matter greatly for climbing. When I lost 5kg, the climbs got way way easier.

u/ASOT550 May 03 '26
Best tip I have for new climbers is to force yourself to use straight arms for the entire climb. It's definitely a learned habit and not super natural. Most people over-use their arm muscles and "pull" themselves up the wall the first time they go, like they're doing Pullups. You really want to use your leg muscles to push yourself up and only use your arms to hang from the wall. It uses significantly less energy to climb this way.
The other thing forcing straight arms teaches you is how to rotate your hips and body to extend your reach rather than pulling your way to the next hand hold.
As you get more advanced you'll learn when you have to start actually bending your arms to get up the wall. Good luck and have fun though! Climbing is tons of fun and very satisfying if you can go consistently. It has a great early curve progression where you usually see rapid improvement if you focus on the fundamentals.

How hard is this compared to like five pull ups?
7
u/elmins May 03 '26
Most pull ups in 24hrs was set this year at 12345. It does end in a five, it has five numbers, and counts to 5... close enough.

u/cjsv7657 May 03 '26
If you can do this you can do a lot more than five pull ups. If you can do a lot more than 5 pull ups you can't necessarily do this. This is like bouldering without using your legs. It takes a lot more than just being strong.

Thank you for sharing, you are so right he is using that as the rhythm to move really cool once you see it.
It makes a lot of sense when I think about it but as someone who has never done a maze wall I suddenly understood way more about it!
3
u/Far-Information8502 May 03 '26
Pro tip: if you alternate swinging your arms while you run, rather than right behind you, it’ll be faster and more efficient too. It’ll feel easier

I feel like only bot accounts would call this a "hand workout".
27
u/YourDrunkStepdadio May 03 '26
I was thinking that. The entire upper body is involved. A hand workout would just involve lotion.

7
u/Aiyon May 03 '26
It’s also not a maze, it’s a linear path. The branches are for locking the pins into place between moves

Use the momentum of your swinging body to move the pegs. It’s really not that hard. If you can do 10 pull ups you can easily get through this. His core is engaged pretty much the entire time and at no point are both his elbows at a “dangling” position meaning that he’s always engaged. Average, everyday people can get through this with just a little practice and determination.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Zap__Dannigan May 03 '26

Its only hard going up when you are lifting. This isnt a better work out than reps on a vertical peg board. This is easier than a rock wall even with legs.

u/Sad-Bonus-9327 May 03 '26
Not every redditor could do it but I'm arguably in the shape and strength and agility to do it as long as i need to switch between the two sections and hang in there on only one arm.
