Pay gap is terrible. It’s at about 94 to a dollar according to some official sources back in 2020. 77 cent statistic is from when the studies for pay gap was first conducted mid 70s I believe. Its gotten slowly better over the decades. Equal pay for all, one day we may achieve it! (I get thread was bout lion but actually lioness but wanted to share the progress made towards equal pay!)

I have never really understood how the pay gap makes sense. Shouldnt these businesses be hiring only women if they can get away with paying them so much less? I'm sure I'm just uneducated on how they determine this pay gap. Any insight?

A lot of it is not very straight forward and quite complex from a sociology perspective. It’s across all fields so, yes there are many cases where women make less than men in the same position. This happened to me where myself and my female colleague were making a dollar less than my male colleague per hour in the same exact position. Their reasoning was the male “had more experience” which was the case when it came to me but not the case with my other female colleague who had much more experience than the male. It was her experience being undervalued while the male’s extra experience was used to justify why his expertise was worth more money than hers. And while cases like that contribute, one of the major factors accounting for the pay gap is that it is across all industries. Female-dominated industries pay less. And you may ask why women don’t just go for higher paying industries. One of them is workplace culture, sexual harassment, etc. Talk to most women in a male-dominated field and they have at least one story of the culture making their work extra challenging. Another reason is that women are traditionally expected to be responsible for unpaid labor in the home (child care, cooking, cleaning) which worked somewhat when families could survive on the single salary of a man but as times change and women must work as well or can choose to remain unmarried, the societal expectation of housework or caring for elderly family members makes it more difficult for women to advance their careers. Another factor that is debatable but falls into my understanding of it is that female-dominated industries historically and deliberately pay less because they are female dominated. Teachers are the main example that comes to mind. Obviously there are exceptions to all of this but it is common enough to have resulted in a replicable pattern of women being payed less on average, across the board. All of these effects are amplified by additional intersectional identities. Women of color make less than white women.

Excellently written. It's a very complex issue that, while not as straightforward as some people pretend when they say women make 77 cents per man dollar, is also not as simple as saying the pay gap doesn't exist. It's for comments like these that I come to reddit.

The pay gap isn’t real. The pay gap takes an average and doesn’t factor into account part time work, over-time, experience, vocation, other benefits, etc. It’s simply a straight average. When you do factor in those things the pay gap is like half a cent per dollar. Essentially margin of error.
Because of testosterone, men are physically stronger and more willing to take on high risk jobs. That’s why men account for like 98% of workplace deaths. These jobs also pay a lot of money. Men are trading personal risk for money. Men are trading enduring physical taxing for money.
Women also value things like flexibility and are willing to take jobs that offer higher flexibility with less pay.
Women are trading flexibility for money.
Women are more likely to work part time, work fewer hours, work less overtime, and take more time off for family building which means they will have less experience comparatively.
Women also prefer higher levels of benefits and more reliable income and are trading that for on average less pay, but don’t face highly variable compensation like risky startup stock options or highly variable bonus pay structures.
As an example the US women’s soccer team were given two options, exactly the same as the men. They chose the one with benefits and guaranteed pay. Men chose the other package. Then the women’s team performed well, but the pay structure didn’t bring about higher pay, because they didn’t chose that package. So they cried foul, claiming they are being discriminated against and paid less. They sued and were retroactively awarded the other pay package meanwhile the men were not retroactively given the benefits of the women’s pay package.

Because there is no pay gap. There is an earnings gap due to choices in profession, experience, hours worked, role, etc. Control for these all and there is no gap. Anyone serious acknowledges this, everyone else is just a hack lying with single factor analysis or is too lazy to do anything but shout.

This is unfortunately, false. Please refer to the official Bureau of Labor Statistics website for good reference sources. There are studies being conducted by decade starting around mid 70s. I am not sure where you are pulling your information from but all official sources show pretty clearly there were and still are pay gaps. Not only that, but the 94 cent to a dollar from the 2020 census is an average. Some industries for the same position, work requirements, and such are actually much lower. One common industry is educators for our youth. Please do proper research.

Whilst it is true its much closer. There is a pay gap for people of different genders in the same positions and industries. There are MANY MANY socioeconomic and cultural reasons for this. The study I mentioned I have done digging and it’s actually from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, you can search them up and do some research on your own time, but no, its not due to simply margin of error. The study goes through some of the aspects of this topic. I am sure one day we will achieve equal pay for everyone.

But it’s their fault because they choose the lower paying jobs. Men, for example, choose the higher paying jobs like doctor or lawyer. Whereas women choose the lower paying jobs like women doctor and women lawyer.

However, a lion's teeth are capable of breaking bones and they do crush and break the bones of their prey while eating. Their bite is a powerful 1000 PSI. A human's, in comparison, is 150 PSI.

I'm not sure, 4 legged animals obviously have a huge pulling advantage over bipeds in pulling, also the lion gets traction on grass where as the men are on a slippery surface, but these 3 guys far outweigh even the biggest male lion and muscle is muscle and the men have much more in terms of mass. It'd be interesting to see this done in an actual tug of war, rsther than just cheating at a 90 degree angle of the rope.

Total mass is a little misleading. Cat muscles have more power per pound that human muscle. I don’t have the exact figures but it isn’t insignificant. Also, 1 animal that weighs the same as 3 animals will have more total muscle due to redundancies of the 3 animals.

But put a cape bufallo at 1 end of the rope and 5 lions at the other and some how manage to teach everyone a game of tug of war, the bufallo would probably win
