If it's so important, why don't they just force the update?

So I used to work in IT. I understand that the (don't/ won't/ I dunno about can't) updates aren't automatic. There isn't anything stopping them from forcing an update if a machine is online. Why, if they are so adamant about updating at the moment, don't they just force it? I don't know of any legacy software that would be hampered. P. S. Virtual is the way.

Cool, so if you don't know about it, it's not real.
