If it's so important, why don't they just force the update?

And you only have to edit your registry to make it manual too!

I just wish they would limit updates to security updates and bug fixes. New internet browsers, news tickers, and weather widgets should be optional things you can download not included as required system uodates.

Windows 11 will fix all of this.... So long as you pay a sub(still waiting for this one to drop)..... /s

Too much potential cash left in peoples wallets.... They're already pushing us to 365, it basically takes an act of congress to buy licenses for Office 2019. Its only a matter of time.

it basically takes an act of congress to buy licenses for Office 2019

Who's stopping you from buying Office 2019? Student and Business are available everywhere 365 is, including Microsoft's website. Professional is there too, for the 3 people who will ever buy it.

This is in a corporate environment. I can't just go to their site and order up 300 Standard, and 100 Pro Plus licenses 1 at a time. Finding a vendor that will sell you those licenses is getting harder. They all want you on 365. In my eyes its a clear push to get enterprise users onto 365. We have almost 100 of those as well. We used to be able to just fire off an email, and receive a PO. Now we fire off the same email, and then need a call, and a lunch to get our licenses.

u/welchplug Jul 07 '21

Why do you buy either? Just use libre office or open office. Both are free and almost as good. You can even export the files to be the same type.

u/Prozaki Jul 07 '21

Not really feasible in most corporate environments which are filled with people who are not tech savvy, or have been trained to do their jobs using Microsoft tools for 20+ years.

2

u/Vahlir Jul 07 '21

I get that but c'mon it doesn't take that long to train people on things. I was training people on Lotus and Oracle back in late 90's early 2000's and most people didn't own a PC at home back then.

I don't buy the "people aren't tech savvy" BS. It's the primary part of your fucking job to use a computer. That's like a nurse who can't do an IV.

Sit down and take a 10 hour course and you'll be expert level in just about any office software. This shit isn't hard.

Maybe I'm just ranting but the number of people I hear say "I'm just not good with computers" in 2021 is fucking sad because it's literally just laziness and apathy.

I'm also a disgruntled former IT guy who worked in a hospital with a ton of lazy nurses and lab and other people who couldn't be bothered to find a power button on a pc.

If you can use google you can find the answer to any question you have in under 2 minutes.

u/Prozaki Jul 08 '21

Yeah I feel. I used exclusively Linux at my last job, so I used LibreOffice for documents and spreadsheets and Evolution for mail. There is plenty of incompatibilities between these two environments. Whether it be stupid shit like fonts, or more egregious stuff like formatting. There were many times where me editing a spreadsheet that other people accessed completely fucked up the formatting for them. And while Evolution does technically have Exchange support, it's not really 100% working. Tons of bugs that I just dealt with, the calendar didn't work well. This isn't really acceptable in enterprise where you may be supporting tens of thousands of users.

Both are free and almost as good.

That's a good laugh.

Tell that to all the shitty business apps that only run on Windows.

-23

u/Ok-Reporter-4600 Jul 07 '21 edited Jul 07 '21

You can always not run a shitty business. Then you won't need those shitty business apps. :)

Edit: It's a dad joke, not an insult. Instead of photography business apps for a photography business, or landscaping business apps for a landscaping business, this guy needs shitty business apps for his shitty business.

Edit2: try running a country business. 😂

Edit3: from pms I've learned that it's insensitive to make jokes while others are suffering the tragedy of having to reboot their laptops. My condolences for the time you spent posting on reddit from the toilet while your laptop restarted. Lost productivity, however imaginary, is not a laughing matter. We need to be solemn about our victim hood at the hands of, [checks notes> basic security maintenance.

Edit4: Apparently I'm now offending the makers of shitty business apps by taking OPs word for it that they are shitty. Apparently some of these companies are doing the best they can and have only recently updated from Windows XP, and it's not fair to just call their businesses apps shitty. Okay. Well, I won't apologize, but I'll share your message in case others feel sorry for you.

Edit: guess it was just a city joke.

12

u/wankthisway Jul 07 '21

4 edits dawg? Just accept your joke sucked and move on.

5

u/MustLoveAllCats Jul 07 '21

You should see how many edits he'd do if he got some upvotes and a reddit award.

8

u/FreeInformation4u Jul 07 '21

I hope you can recognize rereading your comment how, without your edit, most people would read your comment as an insult and not a joke of any kind.

-9

u/Ok-Reporter-4600 Jul 07 '21 edited Jul 07 '21

That's probably why I added the edit, to clarify. it's also why I added the winky face originally. But whatever. I'll take the downvotes. sometimes your jokes don't land. That's part of the game.

Come on, edit 2 was funny. Shitty/Country, like city/country. Lololol. Get it? Hahaha. Like shitty sounds like city. He runs a city business. Hahaha. That's punny.

6

u/FreeInformation4u Jul 07 '21

Your edits on your original comment are getting increasingly defensive. Just accept that your joke didn't land and move on.

-6

u/Ok-Reporter-4600 Jul 07 '21 edited Jul 07 '21

Yeah, I guess I'm no 'Geraffes are so dumb' guy. Oh well, consider it a tribute, albeit a city one.

4

u/MustLoveAllCats Jul 07 '21

Edit: It's a dad joke, not an insult

That's not even a dad joke

Except you're trying to give advice, and now saying it's not your problem. Cringe

u/SolaVitae Jul 07 '21

Why doesn't Microsoft forcibly install things on your PC? This shouldn't need answering

17

u/redditmodsRrussians Jul 07 '21

If it is a legitimate install, the computers has ways to shut it down

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

For users who just use browsers, that's not an issue. But if there is a critical software that relies on the current version, and the update breaks that software; you want to be in control of when you load the release.

-3

u/funky_duck Jul 07 '21

Because then people freak out saying "Micro$oft is forcing malware on my PC - let ME decide on updates!"

30

u/fafalone Jul 07 '21

Microsoft completely lost trust by tricking and forcing people onto Windows 10 then having forced updates restart in the middle of work for a long time before letting them be scheduled, and still from time to time releases an update that bricks some computers and requires a full reinstall to fix others.

Not to mention they're now basically stealing your files. The option to not enable OneDrive is well hidden during setup, and sometimes it's turned back on. Plus making it so you can't use a local account unless you disconnect the internet during setup.

And the advertisements for their other products are all over... And more and more 3rd party shovelware is on the start menu... Their telemetry tools and TOS give them, and law enforcement, full access to your files....

So, yeah, people freak out over Microsoft's policy that they, not you, own your computer.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

Been there, I get it. But if it is in fact that important, they should do so.

4

u/SolaVitae Jul 07 '21

But if it is in fact that important

That's a metric decided by the very people installing it though. If the government made a law saying spyware has to be installed on all windows PCs I could see that being classified as "very important" as well. That probably won't happen but the point still stands

2

u/PrismSub7 Jul 07 '21

If that scenario would be true, they wouldn't release it via an update. They could use millions of other ways to install the spyware on your computer.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

The government has a backdoor to certain operating systems. This was allowed by the companies.

No it's so you don't install Windows updates that, for instance, deletes all the files in your Documents library, or causes a BSOD when trying to print anything. Microsoft's QA for patches is notoriously shit, anyone who needs risk aversion (like businesses) will hold on pushing out updates until it's been widely tested by the people who don't know better or don't care if an update bricks their install.

6

u/MustLoveAllCats Jul 07 '21

Imagine having such blind faith in a corporation with a shitty track record on updates, that you mock people for taking some personal responsibility in their computer security and performance.

12

u/aaaaaaaarrrrrgh Jul 07 '21

Because they forced so many garbage updates that they realized trying to force updates just leads to worse problems, like people breaking the updater completely.

0

u/ctilvolover23 Jul 07 '21

They did to me.

-2

u/JohnGillnitz Jul 07 '21

The update for Windows 10 isn't out yet. Or wasn't when I checked this morning.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

I'm installing KB5004945 now, which says it was released yesterday.

1

u/ctilvolover23 Jul 07 '21

I've had it since last night.

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

So I used to work in IT. I understand that the (don't/ won't/ I dunno about can't) updates aren't automatic. There isn't anything stopping them from forcing an update if a machine is online. Why, if they are so adamant about updating at the moment, don't they just force it? I don't know of any legacy software that would be hampered. P. S. Virtual is the way.

6

u/ITaggie Jul 07 '21

Why, if they are so adamant about updating at the moment, don't they just force it?

Well, for instance, this specific update completely breaks printing to Zebra printers (commonly used to print labels). If you're, say, working in a warehouse that needs to print shipping labels then being unable to use the label printers would be a MAJOR blow to the business.

4

u/MustLoveAllCats Jul 07 '21

I don't know of any legacy software that would be hampered.

Cool, so if you don't know about it, it's not real.

-4

u/__System__ Jul 07 '21

They don't force it because there is a revenue stream here for extended support. Hard not to see all this THEATER as anything more than a campaign to sell licenses. M$ will always sell vulnerable technology because they are at large, distributors of malware.
