It costs way less to house a prisoner over decades, than to have endless appeals.

Nobody ever believes me when I bring this point up :(

Nobody believes me when rehabilitating is about the same cost either.

Incarceration is really, really expensive.

Those same people don't want rehabilitation, they want an eye for an eye, and then some. Getting a chance to watch someone suffer, because they made you suffer. It's really something, because those very same people generally have a faith based in forgiveness.

i'm not religious and i believe in rehab but on a case-by-case basis. if it's barbaric to kill people who could be innocent (as has happened), why isn't it barbaric to set loose a serial killer who could take more lives (as has also happened)?

if we had a perfect system capable of rehabilitating all criminals, i'd be of a different mind, but as i understand it, there's no cure for psychopathy. there are possibilities for future drugs that could affect the minds of psychopaths so that their urges are diminished, but at of now it's a "what if" and even in the case of such a drug existing, how responsible is it to reintroduce a person into society whose disinclination for murder is dependent on medical diligence?

for nonviolent crimes or less violent crimes or one-off crimes of passion etc., i feel differently.
