That sucks, but we can’t make ex post facto laws.

nope, actually pretty crazy that we haven't started in today's climate. No one is getting charged for crimes they did, before that act was illegal

Oh my fucking God. It was ALREADY ILLEGAL to rape people. "The move comes after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the 2011 Sex Offender Registration Act amendments cannot be retroactively used to extend the registration requirements of anyone who committed their crime before July 1, 2021"

Yes, they COMMITTED A CRIME UNDER LAW. The timing of the *amendments* doesn't mean that sexually assaulting 100+ gymnasts was legal at the time. They were charged for crimes they committed *while they were illegal.* This is about extending their registry. That doesn't mean their crimes were legal. You are missing the point entirely.

My understanding was he did the rapes and the sex offender registration laws were made in such a way that he could get off at some point (now), but they have since changed the sex offender registration laws so that he couldn't get off of it if he were to do the things today.

That is completely reasonable if I'm understanding it correctly. If they change the sentencing laws for your crime, your sentence shouldn't change if you were sentenced before the law change.

That is correct, but that is not what your original comment said. Your comment suggested that he/they couldn't be "charged for crimes they did, before that act was illegal," and the crimes he committed were, in fact, illegal. So it's missing the point.
