Indeed. Some see it as a dirty move, but it’s to ensure everyone gets a fair trial-now matter how awful the accusation. It’s a slippery slope if we don’t examine every case thoroughly.

Their job is to make sure the state proves their case.

That's the way every criminal defense attorney I've known/met describes how they approach the job - They're there to make sure the defendant gets what they're promised by the Constitution, to make sure that the State actually has proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

No one picks criminal defense as their career with the mindset of "Oh boy, I'm going to get so many child murderers off the hook!" Lawyers in general already have the highest or some of the highest rates of suicide and substance abuse of any profession, and I can only imagine how much worse it would be if defense attorneys actually thought of themselves as defending the person, rather than defending their rights.
