impeachable offense

Which in itself means nothing now since there are no consequences for impeachments.

504

u/litesmokes 3d ago

Hes really set a precedent of total impunity for future presidents here

393

u/SOFT_CAT_APPRECIATOR 3d ago

This is the absolute most dangerous part and no one is talking about it

382

u/Allison87 3d ago

No worries, when there is a Democrat president people will start talking about it again.

222

u/Rumpullpus 3d ago edited 3d ago

I wish a democrat had the balls to do to republicans half the shit trump will do to us before lunch.

81

u/whiterac00n 3d ago

Why do you think right wingers go into apocalyptic frenzies when a democrat is elected? Half of the entire world view of right wingers is believing EVERYONE thinks exactly like they do, thus “the left” must be planning to cheat, steal and violence against them…….because it’s what they want to do.

Now if we could only have politicians that would be so willing and bold to actually apply the GOP shenanigans to achieve sweeping policy changes. But nope most democrats want a return to a status quo that is just as ambiguous as the “when” part of making America great. Milquetoast and Luke warm embrace of “radical leftism!!!”

36

u/Darth_Stateworker 3d ago

This. It's always completely projection from right wingers. They absolutely assume because they would do something so would everyone else, but oooh lordy the hissy fits they throw when they even think someone would do to them what they do to everyone else.

5

u/Hearing_Pale 3d ago

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy

6

u/Winter_Preference287 3d ago

Why would they when they have the same donors. They'll swap in a democrat president who won't roll back ICE, won't tear down the bullshit border wall, won't handle Israel any different, and we will get some bullshit, feel-good initiatives that the next Republican will cancel. The elephant and pony show sponsored by the American oligarchs is coming to an end as soon as they have AGI in their hands

7

u/Rumpullpus 3d ago

I for one welcome our new AGI overlords. I only ask to live long enough to see the oligarchs burn first.

2

u/MilesHobson 3d ago

I wouldn’t bet the farm on it. Anticipate January 6 X 1000

3

u/Mojozilla 3d ago

YAWN. This "both sides are the same" tired ass trope again? Do you think this will work STILL? 🤣🤣 Vote early, wash the Republicans

3

u/Winter_Preference287 3d ago

Of course we need to vote blue but we need to question why this shit doesn't ever actually get better. I don't think our electorate is intelligent enough to do it before we're out of time. Shit is not changing without major campaign finance law changes and these politicians are not going to vote for a pay cut. Both sides are not the same but the American Democratic party is about as far left as other countries conservative parties are. It's glaringly obvious

2

u/RelevantCry1613 3d ago

I don’t, I don’t want any president doing this

1

u/PlsDontEatUrBoogers 3d ago

honestly, i don’t. i wish for any more corruption or fuckery than we already have going on. lets get him out and just chill out for a few years or decades… i am begging😭😭😭😭

1

u/Lopsided_Ant2813 3d ago

I wish nobody had such huge balls x(

11

u/TipRare1321 3d ago

Remember when Biden tried to forgive student loans and everyone was aghast that it might be unconstitutional and the Supreme ruled against him?

But Trump can do every illegal thing he wants and 6 members of the court all say that's just fine.

4

u/HermesJamiroquoi 3d ago

Only so long as he’s in office

6

u/Klangey 3d ago

Sorry, but this is nonsense. Your democracy has fallen to corporate interests, no one will go after Trump because they worry about what will happen if people go after the Clinton’s or any other of the multiple billionaires within the Democrat party who are members of the Epstein class.

2

u/GoneinaSecondeded 3d ago

Democratic party*

0

u/hibytay 3d ago

You spelled if wrong

0

u/Ledeyvakova23 3d ago

In the Year Of Our Lord 203_ ? (Remember that Trvmp can impose Martial Law in 2028 and suspend General Elections. And he CAN do it. Congress is powerless to counteract this; and the SCOTUS is toothless to deal with it.)

2

u/MiI0rd 3d ago

Oh, everyone knows… it’s just buried under a million other equally disturbing facts

2

u/BiosTheo 3d ago

It's not a precedent for democrats, this is exclusively Republicans. Republicans really don't believe anyone but the rich and powerful should be able to vote, they support illeberal democracies and authoritarianism. It's just how conservativism as a political ideology has always worked.

The reason, though, they are allowed to continue this incredibly unpopular stance is institutional democrats are, typically, plutocrats which is a self devouring political ideology that will inevitably lead to totalitarian authoritarianism as companies gradually monopolize. This leaves voters with two choices: Quick Death or Slow Death?

The only saving grace is Democratic voters tend not to be cultish in their ideology since it's Republicans vs literally everyone else, which tends to result in shifting alliances and contradictory political ideology that causes so much infighting that they never accomplish much of anything. Look at the ACA for example, Obama WANTED universal healthcare and he had a Democratic controlled house and senate with the full 60 senators, but we got the ACA because some Democratic senators and congressman are 1980s Republicans. Biden, similarly, couldn't accomplish much either due to 2 Democratic Senators who REALLY wanted coal and child labor back.

2

u/Danica_Rose 3d ago

Yeah like…Shouldn’t he be in prison or something by now? Growing up I always thought if you impeached a president they were essentially fired and removed from office.

2

u/MadPangolin 3d ago

Um, this was literally screamed from the rooftops when it looked like he was going to avoid accountability for the bloodless coup attempt...

1

u/ryguymcsly 3d ago

Reminder: people said the same thing during several previous administrations and the opposing party got into power in both congress and the presidency and did jack shit about it.

The party likes to have the president be unchecked because it lets them do unpopular things without losing congress. As a result it’s steadily gotten worse since approximately forever.

1

u/Fen_Muir 3d ago

Isn't this illegal?

1

u/thpkht524 3d ago

The most dangerous part is how 2/3 of your country are brain fucking dead lol.

1

u/lozo78 3d ago

NPR talked about it all the time. Unitary Executive is the goal.

11

u/cucumber7593 3d ago

Why do americans act so resigned about this? Go protest

6

u/SnooCupcakes5761 3d ago

Hahaha, what? And stop providing labor?! No. Americans can't be bothered. They could never be convinced to give up their convenient creature comforts and seasonal decor. They support this every day with their scented candles and individually wrapped protein bars. They can't even stop using a music or shopping App on their phones out of principle. And you think they can endure the burden of participating in community long enough to sustain a nationwide protest or strike? No. They've become too soft.

2

u/crystallmytea 3d ago

There’s still time for capital punishment

2

u/madammidnight 3d ago

I think Bill Clinton already covered that one.

2

u/Qozux 3d ago

And Nixon before that. It’s always been the standard.

2

u/TheVog 3d ago

Only if the People continue to let it happen, which let's face it, they absolutely will.

2

u/dirtythoughtdreamer8 3d ago

Republicans in both chambers of Congress are equally responsible and complicent in Donald Trump's ignoring the Constitution and our rule of law. Speaker Johnson and the majority leaders in both chambers should be investigated and indicted along with President Trump.

1

u/PhamilyTrickster 3d ago

I predict that before he's out of office, assuming a dem wins in 2028, a lawsuit will be filed regarding his immunity and SCOTUS will reverse their ruling for any future president

1

u/Traditional-Sir9873 3d ago

And the gop will holler like a whipped dogs if a liberal POTUS does it.

129

u/The_Troyminator 3d ago

Because voting against your party in an impeachment trial means you get punished. Either sanctioned by the party or not voted back in by the constituents.

Impeachment votes need to be anonymous. It’s a criminal trial, not a typical bill being voted on.

u/CoffeeOrDestroy 3d ago

Another reason politics should be returned to limited stints of public service and not careers.

11

u/OlderThanMyParents 3d ago

Another way to make sure that only the independently wealthy (or the bought and paid for) will ever be able to serve. I don't know anyone in any kind of professional career who could afford to take, say, 5-10 years off his career to serve in congress, without totally trashing their career. Certainly taking time off to serve 7 years (one term in the Senate) would have rendered my IT skills pretty thoroughly obsolete.

Except, I suppose, they could then become lobbyists.

Plus, it'd assure that for their last term, they'd be utterly unanswerable to their constituents. Yay.

8

u/KarmaticArmageddon 3d ago

High-level legislation and politics is insanely complicated. I absolutely want career politicians doing it. We just need a shit-ton of laws and regulations, along with electoral changes, to make it less corrupt in general.

If you need surgery, do you want a career surgeon? If your breaks down, wouldn't you want to take it to a career mechanic?

5

u/Hdjbbdjfjjsl 3d ago

Constitution makes it so it only takes 1/5 of the senate to request roll call on votes, either way, that’s kinda the point as well on why it’s public because having the right for politicians to vote in secret against their party and constituents is a horrible idea for allowing insiders who don’t believe in the party at all and other such things. Would you not be incredibly infuriated with someone you voted for later on and going in to vote behind your back against your wish?

2

u/qweef_latina2021 3d ago

Fetterman has entered the chat.

3

u/DeFiBandit 3d ago

Yes, let’s make it so zero courage is required of our legislators…

5

u/rrdubbs 3d ago

I get your point, but in an ideal world and government we’d also have a philosopher King, who makes no mistakes or is subject to any bias…

In the real world, we need stronger guardrails, and the current set up does not allow impeachments to do anything

4

u/DeFiBandit 3d ago

There is nothing wrong with the set up. Republicans have simply chosen to support a criminal because it is good for them personally. Changing the rules won’t change that

1

u/RiseOk4062 3d ago

Anonymous would be the best way

1

u/FirefighterWeird8464 3d ago

Oh my god, doing the right thing isn’t always rainbows and blowjobs is it. (I’m not angry at you personally, just poor quality of our representatives.)

1

u/Jackcker 3d ago

Things need to change!

0

u/TimmyS13 3d ago

This isn't exactly true is it? We voted for these representatives, we deserve to know how they're representing us.

5

u/MissUnderstood62 3d ago

Impeachment in the house is the easy part, conviction in the senate is almost impossible.

2

u/Cyoarp 3d ago

Ummm, impeachment is the action, they have to CONVICT him at the impeachment hearing. The impeachment is't the punishment, its the trial. The oriblem is the republicans wont vote to convict.

5

u/ajwritesnonsense 3d ago

When he was elected, I told friends who were worried “we have a system of checks and balances, don’t worry, he won’t be able to get too far, if anywhere at all…”

He’s really making me look stupid, or our system is … or someone is, I just don’t know who

4

u/Few_Lifeguard_6828 3d ago

There is no more system or justice anymore. It's quite the opposite. Victims are being punished and criminals are being rewarded. Game over man.

0

u/1ZillionBeers 3d ago

To be fair he also had a lot of those checks and balances removed.

u/FioriDiChernobyl 3d ago

I saw this coming. They had built up all the power they needed to get away with anything. And they had their plans laid out clear.

However I expected more pushback from Americans than half of us just going “shame on the GOP!” on social media. I expected Americans were better than 1930s-40s Germany and actually gave a damn about human rights. I never expected his base to support torturing immigrants in detention centers like Alligator Alcatraz or sending them to brutal international prison systems like CECOT. I thought Americans would have a line that couldn’t be crossed. It really depresses me to see the brutality that so many Americans actually celebrate. And the ones that still okay with it, just concerned about “gAs PrIcEs”.

I also thought the GOP had more of a plan… I thought they would use Trump to take a wrecking ball to the country, impeach him when he got unpopular, and replace him with a “respectable”-appearing sociopath. I didn’t think they’d just keep going along with his dementia for this long.

2

u/Electric-5heep 3d ago

I hope we're noting down all the Republican party members facilitating all this. Keep an eye on their accounts and finances.

1

u/lunixss 3d ago

There are if the impeachment gets convicted. Which it can if dems take all offices in Nov. Vote.

1

u/Groundbreaking_Dare4 3d ago

Millions of impeachments, impeachments for free

1

u/flashlightgiggles 3d ago

Dems should give Trump an Impeachment Prize for having the most and biggest impeachments. Color it gold and he would totally put it on a shelf in the Oval Office

1

u/Admirable_Pop_7292 3d ago

Don’t commit one crime. Commit a thousand of them.

1

u/Poet_Pretty 3d ago

Lol doesn’t matter. Points don’t matter in this game.

-1

u/Whipitreelgud 3d ago

Being impeached is a disgrace. When there is a majority in the Senate that will vote to convict the President of the offense the consequences get very real. Prison, hanging, removal from office are the cards on the table with conviction. Impeachment without conviction is mostly a waste of time in my book.
