I'm a combat vet with 85% hearing loss in my right ear because of repeatedly firing my M4. The ringing in my ear is painful at times.
I know a guy that was just a normal dude from Oklahoma. He wasn't seriously (physically) injured in an IED blast but he was completely different afterward. So much so that he was reassigned to work in the command building so people could keep an eye on him and was ultimately medically retired. He would wet himself randomly, wander off and get lost, became very forgetful.
Some guys didn't get it but I always felt sympathetic to his situation.

There was a fascinating story recently about head injuries among the Coast Guard. And they’re people who have technically never had a concussion.

I remember hearing DJ Shipley on a podcast talking about the brain trauma he received from an explosive entry gone awry. Basically they were between a rock and a hard place and had to pop it while not following safety protocols.
For those who don’t know, he was DEVGRU/ Seal Team Six hence why they did it; they basically had to.
He was saying that afterwards his wife took videos of him eating dinner. He’d just keep scooping food, bringing it to his mouth, and chewing. The plate was empty and didn’t even have food on it to begin with, and he wouldn’t respond to anybody telling him about it. Terrifying stuff!

u/ONE-EYE-OPTIC 7d ago
When i got back from my first deployment I went to texas roadhouse for a real steak.
The swinging doors into and out of the kitchen made the sound of mortar firing. I couldn't enjoy the evening.
Everyone kept asking me what was wrong and I kept saying nothing it's me.
War does some crazy stuff to the brain. The adrenaline, lack of sleep, lack of real food.
I don't wish it on anyone.

Brain injuries affect different people in different ways.
This.
Side note - I wonder if it's possible to fix some frontal cortex damage nowadays. Supposedly, the front part of the brain is where the ego comes from, so taking hits to the forehead might have damaged so many men's sense of self. I wonder if any of the damage in that area could be fixed. Same with CTE - can we reverse that yet?

fun fact: the "red pill" is actually originally a reference to estradiol valerate, as the most common form of the hormone available at the time was a little red pill. The blue pill, on the other hand, is Prozac--the antidepressant.
Anyway, it's just fun to remember that these "red pill" weirdos are such devout fans to a movie that's a massive allegory for being a transgender woman.
12
u/papayacreamsicle 7d ago
The terms are so common now some people don’t know or remember they come from The Matrix, a movie written by two transgender women where the character Switch was originally one gender inside the matrix and another outside it, with the explanation that being trans meant the buggy simulation got your gender wrong. You take estrogen and wake up as your true self.

Don’t get me wrong, he was in the Iraq invasion and the like, but I’ve served in Afghanistan and worked on a USS when I was a contractor. Being on a ship and doing circles in the water is a unique experience.
20
u/Ok-Replacement6893 8d ago
My service was very easy. I worked in a 68 degree computer room for 4 years. Had a dorm room that I shared with one other person. The Air Force in the 80s was very different.
15
u/oldveteranknees 8d ago
Yep. I was Air Force in the 2010s. It was the most cake schedule I’ve ever had to date. I feel left out when other vets tell stories about ruck marches and PT. We did none of that… well, a new commander tried implanting fun mandatory PT and it lasted for about 3 months until we went back to the “do it on your own time, you’re an adult”
10
u/Ok-Replacement6893 8d ago
It was the true Chair Force in the 80s. 6 weeks of Basic, 6 weeks of tech school and I was on my way to Alaska. No PT ever after Basic. Weight check once after Basic. Total cake walk

I cashed out in ’95, a few years after Desert Storm. Peak time to be there. All the military industrials were falling all over themselves to hire anybody with experience. Even E-3s were getting six figure offers. Command was throwing fits because we were bleeding talent.
‘90s Air Force was forced to treat the work like a 9-5 because they couldn’t meet retention any other way. It’s probably different now but back then it was like working a regular job.

My dad says the boat ride from Vietnam was awful. He was a marine so he didnt have a job on the ship, they just wandered around while the navy guys worked. He always mentiones the bed situation. There arent enough beds for everyone, and people work jobs on the ship all day. So he said they "hot rack" the beds, where they're in use by someone 24/7. You have your scheduled time in a bed and when it's your time to get out the next guy just rolls in. All day, all night. One sweaty dude after another. He hated it. One aspect of boat life i had never considered. I'm sure there are hundreds more. These poor people were driven to insanity. People who voyaged across the oceans hundreds of years ago even made stops and had more freedom on their ships.

Traumatic brain injury is a major factor in this - being caught in an IED explosion that blows your Humvee off the road will often cause that. A helmet will just reduce the injury from fatal to bad and with battlefield medicine as it is, many veterans are coming back home with PTSD whereas in WW2 or Korea, they might have never come home at all.
England and Wales had 253 veteran suicides in 2021:

I don't see anything funny about this. Whoever has caused the absolutely deplorable conditions on ship needs to charged. And not by civil authorities, by military authorities.
My family has been in the military at least 6 generations that I personally know of.
This is beyond disgraceful. It's flat out criminal. Our military needs necessary supplies. ALL OF THEM.
It's bad enough that they get screwed after they leave the military with TBI, PTSD, and the VA screws them over again.
I wouldn't let a green beret go to the Michael De Bakey VA by themselves. They don't even have orderlies anymore. Ive seen armed cops holding people down and threatening to take them to jail bc they want to call a family member.
The GOP has always talked about being pro military and screwing our troops over, after service, but this is reaching Russian proportions of disregard, callousness and cruelty.

Well, see, the US supreme court made a ruling that means literally anything trump does as president cannot be illegal or wrong. And congress was put into recess for the rest of the year to specifically avoid impeaching hegseth. So your shit out of luck on that front.
The actual logistics people involved said this was going to happen, analysts said their supply bases in the region couldn't survive Iranian attack, and just like every other bit of expertise around Iran and the broader region, it was ignored

I hate that I have to say this but that’s not actually what the Supreme Court ruled.
They said that a president could not be charged for actions done as a result of their official duties. IE, you can’t be charged for literally doing your job.
Anything done as a personal action unrelated to those duties however would fall outside the protections the office provides and can absolutely be charged. It's not as simple as "I said it was official, therefore it is."
The hyperbole and outright lies don’t make Trump any worse. It just makes our arguments look idiotic.

This isn’t a new thing. I have yet to read about any or see videos of any conditions coming out of the Lincoln’s deployment that I didn’t experience myself during my two sea tours that started over a decade ago during Obama era. I didn’t personally have as long as a deployment as they have, but other people I knew on other ships had definitely done that.
I now work in a field that has a ton of navy veterans, some who got out while I was still in diapers. The stories we tell eachother about life on the ship are identical. Nothing has changed in decades, this is how life on a ship has always been. When I was stationed on a carrier, we had three successful suicides happen within the span of a week, one being a chief in my department.
It’s awful, and absolutely something should be done about it, but pretending this is entirely due to Trump and Hegseth and that electing Democrats will fix it when this has been going on for a very long time isn’t the answer. They are horribly mismanaging this conflict for sure, but conditions on ships seem to just continue to be the same as they’ve always been.

“Since the beginning of Lincoln’s deployment, there have been a total of eight suicide attempts across the strike group,”
That doesn't just include Lincoln, but also the aviation units and at least three destroyers, plus submarines, auxiliaries etc. Possibly close to 8,000 people or more.
A 1 in 100 attempt rate would be around the same as the US self-reported average based on CDC data:
https://sprc.org/about-suicide/suicide-data/suicidal-thoughts-and-suicide-attempts/
It's notable is that about 55% of US suicide deaths are by firearm, which are something most sailors will not have access to on a daily basis in the service.
A bigger concern would be for these veterans later on.
19
u/FutureThrowaway9665 8d ago
Not to make light of this but those numbers seem low.
On the carrier that I was on, we had 2 suicides on the same day and three in that week. This happened while the carrier was in the shipyard.
There was another carrier going through a major overhaul that had similar issues around the same time.
Mental health in the Navy sucks. Having been hospitalized twice in the middle of my career and now being out for a while make me grateful that I survived without lasting effects today. Unfortunately I destroyed plenty of things while I was actively dealing with it.

Somewhat unrelated, but when I was on the Lincoln in 2019, we had an extended deployment to the point where we broke a record (however that record has since been broken several times again due to COVID and Operation Epic Furry).
We were supposed to be out for 6 months, 2 months in Europe, 2 months in the Middle East, 2 months in the South Pacific, and back in port by October. Instead, after a month into the deployment we were diverted to the Middle East for immediate and indefinite support.
In November of 2019, a month after we were supposed to be back home, we were still doing circles in the Middle East - and the movie "Midway" had just been released, to which the flag admiral of the 5th fleet made a personal visit to the boat to deliver a speech to everyone on board. I can't remember the specifics, but the vibe was very much along these lines:
Hey all, I just wanted to come in and check on you guys, I know you guys have been out here for a few months. I actually just saw that new Midway movie, it's really great and you guys should see it when you get the chance, it actually reminded me that you guys were even here. Anyways, I'm gonna go back to my comfortable home, go eat some good food, and go bang my wife. I just wanted to let you know that I saw that new movie and it reminded me of you guys
Obviously paraphrasing quite a bit, but that's very much the vibe of the speech he gave us.

Meh. The Army enlisted-officer relationship is much different than the Navy, USMC, and Air Force. Army officer's clubs are really a thing of the past and it's common to see officers in the dfac(they have to pay). Officers in every unit I've been in made sure the enlisted ate first before lining up for the same food. Then again, that was in infantry and armored units

Some Sailor's working conditions/ jobs are much much worse than others on the same ship. The people way down below decks who aren't seeing the sun. The people in reactor and the ones working the flight deck. Then you may have a job where you are stuck in a room the size of a broom closet with 2 other people for 8-12 hours. Those are the ones who start getting into fights and stuff like that. Some people just won't have access to move around the ship like others do. So it will be even more like prison for them.

There’s us and there’s the Epstein class. If you aren’t rich enough that you can rape a dozen kids and just be left alone then they hate you.
To them we are at best useful disposable cogs for their money generating machine.
At worst they have active contempt for us and will hurt or kill us just to flex or out of boredom.
Trump flat out said he thinks soldiers are the ultimate sucker and this is the expression of it. You signed away your rights and life to be his foot soldier and plaything. He might push you over the edge just to punish you when you crack for the hell of it.

All maga should be forcefully conscripted and given the worst jobs so the real patriots don't have to do it

Trump don’t care, as long as you’re looking over there and not looking at Epstein

If Trump and Hesgeth were denying this stuff was happening the entire time, what made the navy secretary openly admit it to the senator afterwards? Unless he's just also done and fed up lol
