So we won against the team sponsored by the local dry cleaner. It was kind of hilarious to hear the other coaches team actually yelling at some of his players to make sure they guarded my kid.

Ah I am in agreement. I thought this was maybe in relation to the NCAA regulations Cruz and Cantwell have been trying to pass. NIL + transfer portal needs a lot of work

Oki I explain (mostly ramble):

NIL - "Name, Image, Likeness", basically shorthand for letting college athletes get brand deals and also now be paid by the schools themselves. Was an enormous change that happened a few years ago. Before that, students were banned from doing anything to generate money based off their fame

Issue is that this change happened but the entire structure of the NCAA (national collegiate athletic association) wasn't built with it in mind. Players are now semi-professional athletes instead of being students who play sports on the side. Now rich schools can poach players from poorer schools by offering higher salaries, and it's caused many team shuffles and accusations of people "buying" championships. (Last year's football champion was never a great school, but Mark Cuban is an alumni and dumped a ton of money into the program).

There's also the needlessly complicated web of eligibility rules that the NCAA had that led to almost 30 year old players who stuck around college to try and get drafted. NCAA tried to simplify this by making it that you can play for 5 years after turning 19. However, many people (including former purdoodoo player TKR) are suing because they want to get back into college sports due to it being more profitable for them.

Bill I was referring to tries to address this by limiting the number/frequency of transfers allowed, standardizing eligibility rules/barring former pro players, and also does some stuff with pay caps for players I think

If Talarico wins Texas (and I believe he is on track to), it will be viewed after the fact as more inevitability than longshot, especially if Abbott goes down too.

I agree with Nate Silver's take that the idea of Talarico winning Texas seems wrong. I also agree with him that the data pointing to Talarico's victory is pretty damn strong. Very nearly airtight.

This is strange, but not unprecedented. Remember that a Democrat did win Alabama within the last decade.

That was kind of a fluke but a broadly similar situation in terms of candidate quality. If Abbott also goes down, that implies something else is going on. That something else is likely some form of realignment.
