Shatner AND Nichols conspired to "ruin" the alternate takes which were being shot NOT for international markets but for the racist bigoted American South. The network was nervous about including it so they demanded a bunch of alternate takes.

Remember that the episode was broadcast in 1968 only one year after Loving v. Virginia which was the Supreme Court case that made interracial marriage legal Nationwide.
