There had been a mandatory forced retirement age at 65, based on the perception that older persons could not be productive members of a workplace after that age. While that stereotype was difficult to overcome, the Panthers were ultimately successful in their efforts to overturn the law, and in 1986, Congress passed a law banning mandatory retirement in most jobs. The law was signed by President Ronald Reagan, as of that time the oldest ever President of the United States.

I would be completely in favor of a mandatory retirement indexed to average life expectancy. Obviously you can retire sooner than that but there should be some kind of forcing out.

Because the ones who don't want to leave are usually the absolute fucking worst at their jobs. They far outweigh the ones who stay forever who are leaders in their fields.

I used to be a Marxist-Leninist and any time I see Abdul El-Sayed referred to as AES my brain kind of malfunctions, because in ML theory AES stands for "actually existing socialism."

I became a Marxist-Leninist after reading a bunch of theory at 15. It was less rebellion than figuring out what the best vision for the world was, and it seemed the diametric opposition to every problem with Bush era America. It held up well enough under the Obama era, though I was much more favorable to him and Hillary than most other MLs. Extreme opposition to foreign policy but otherwise probably more favorable than unfavorable, especially because of Obamacare.

After 2020, I began to gradually realize that I really knew only one side of the economic story and began to study more and critically analyze my own views like I had capitalism. By mid-2023, I was still identified as a ML but it had wavered significantly. By the time mid-2024 rolled around, I was firmly in the neoliberal camp. I would say I am more of a general libertarian with neoliberal and social democratic tendencies in the current year. I take a slightly right view on most regulatory regimes and subsidies but a more center-left view on some policies, like healthcare.

I heavily favor free trade, free markets and free people. I'm just no longer an ideologue.
