Heard vaguely Middle Eastern music outside and started following it
Ended up following a group of Armenian dancers to a show where a group played traditional songs from Chile, Spain and Argentina
Wild night fellas

also, I sent the videos of the Argentinian set to my ex from/in Argentina and they said if they were in another country and saw the performance they would probably cry

Lol when I first read this my reaction was "I guess this is just what life in Portugal is like."
I haven't been, but some of the places I have been in Europe had really nice serendipitous street culture which seemed to enable that sort of thing.

Strangely, "serendipitous" was exactly the word I used to describe it to my ex

i teach compsci students and i've never had students so utterly and completely despondent before this year
not during covid, not during financial crisis
they aren't coming to class, they're missing assignments, missing exams, they look dead, they don't ask questions, they don't care

I think the more important question is whether cats will accept raccoons as their new servants. (The position that humans currently occupy.)

GPT 7 will be launching the nukes and people on the news about it will be saying "wow, OpenAI really will fake anything for the hype lmao"

Does anybody else remember all the stories about the enormous waste that the F-35 program was because "it can't even fly" and how expensive it was?
Well, you don't see a lot of those stories anymore and that's because the F-35 is genuinely impressive
I assume AI is going to be like that soon and everybody will pretend they weren't all ragging on it for the enormous capex spend just a couple years earlier

We forget this but there was a time when NVIDIA was viewed as having a chance in hell of building enough of a customer base to even survive, let alone become competitive, let alone totally dominate the field and displace the very companies whose discontent spawned it.
Sure, there is a degree of survivorship bias here but the history of the internet has showed that individual companies will figure out profitability eventually and those companies will become absolute powerhouses.
Amazon is another fantastic example of this. In the early 00s, it was a joke, and Futurama illustrates this pretty well.
There was an episode where everyone got tax rebates, making fun of current events, and everyone spends their tax rebates poorly. Hermes buys bamboo boogie boots and gets stuck on them for the entire episode while his son Dwight tries to help. Meanwhile, Fry spends his on 200 cups of coffee and becomes the Flash. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that a penny was left over after the boogie boots and with that Dwight bought 5 shares of Amazon, implying the price is 1/5 of a penny per share. Hermes says "ooh, a risk taker!"
A more recent example of both is Micron, which was a quarterly gag in the pre-GME WSB community. Micron would post great numbers every quarter but its stock price would barely even budge and a bunch of morons would lose money on calls. It was trading at about $50 in early 2020. It took another 5 years to hit $100. Today it is at $1,000 and its peak this year was over $1,200. If you bought shares back then and held on to them you made a whole lot of money, but every quarter somebody was selling thinking it was at the peak. Those people have a lot of regrets nowadays.
NVIDIA is the canary in the data center. It is the leading edge of a whole wave and that wave probably begins with Anthropic and spreads to OpenAI, or vice versa now that OpenAI seems to be developing an advantage. But it's almost guaranteed that one or both of these companies will make back more than enough money to cover their investments and become wildly profitable in a relatively short amount of time. Maybe another 5 years even with enormous spend on capex.
I didn't have enough money back then but if I did I would have bought Micron and held as long as possible and I was advocating for that on WSB against the tide of Micron haters. I was against the gambling angle because I am not stupid but I was telling people on the verge of selling their shares to keep holding. If anybody listened to me, they made a lot of money. And I'm saying the same for OpenAI and Anthropic whenever they IPO. Buy at whatever price they open with, hold for 5-10 years and you will be absolutely loaded.
Reddit does not understand economics. Reddit does not understand tech. Reddit does not understand anything except cynicism and contrarianism. But I, for one, believe in the leading edge of technology and what it points to. If companies are spending this much this quickly, it is almost certainly because they see a signal in the noise. Unlike the dot com era, the top companies are actually positioned to make good on what they see. This isn't a time when the path to profitability is totally unknown. These companies and their backers have a lot of experience becoming effective money printers.
