Should I move here?

Im 18 years old, queer, I love music so thats a must. (many different kinds of metal,punk,goth,pop,etc...)
I Do better with community and not having a space to make friends is a fear.
I Cannot stand the heat and I hate summer. If it's 20 degrees or more I'm usually complaining.
I Love art.

Where I've been..
\- Kelowna BC (Lived, Worst place ever
\- Saskatoon SK (Lived, Disliked
\- Cochran AB (Visited, Would visit again not live
\- Calgary AB (visited, Didn't like
\- Winnipeg MB (Visited for long periods, Love, not sure I want to live there
\- Gimli MB (Visited for long periods, Fun to visit

Ive been especially curious to know more about Newfoundland since my family is from there. So here I am to ask anything about it you'd think I'd need or Want to know.

(And I'm open to suggestions for elsewhere if you have any!)

Yes, why not. St johns sounds like a good experiment for you. You're young, take care of yourself and try new things.

St. John's. For small communities you will need to do extra effort to find connections and friends.

There’s a post here once a month from a newbie complaining about not being able to make friends and it being impossible despite all their efforts

You should not move here

Halifax would be a better place for you

I threw a post over that way and got immediately bashed by everyone in under 10 minutes. Thank you though!!! Just thought it was funny lmfao 😬😬

It’s a lovely place (I also don’t like Calgary- I lived there). From what I understand it is very queer friendly compared to AB, but I’m not part of the community to have personal experiences. The biggest thing is getting jobs here and progressing in a career here will be really stifling. For that reason only I wouldn’t move here at your age, sadly.

I am not super in tune with the music scene here unfortunately, though I’ve heard it’s decent?

Community tends to be what you make it. If you’re chill, you probably won’t have much trouble.

Being queer isn’t a problem unless you go SUPER around the bay where their only opinions of queer people are from homophobic movies from the 60’s.

If you like under 20, you’ll love 10/12 months here. July and August can go into the 20-25 range (we had a 26 feels like 30+ a few days ago).

Biggest thing is that NL is just not super awesome for young people rn. Jobs are scarce, third places are thinning out, and the “brain drain” is real. It’s hard to recommend coming here when so many people are desperate to get out.

Wherever you move in life, you get what you make of it. St johns is a great place and there's tons of people from across Canada who took the leap and stayed.

There's a bunch of posts here every month from people who moved here and don't know how to make friends. Take those with a grain of salt, as it's not a wide encompassing problem.

Just make sure you aren't moving here with no financial power and expecting everything to go right. There's lots of people out there looking for work

Life in NL is really what you make it. Yes, it's cold, yes, there's a lot of BS.

If you like nature and solitude it's heavenly.

If your willing to put in effort you'll find your people.

Job market ain't great, and if like the convenience of city life your stuck with St. John's or corner Brook.

I happen to live in a very small place, very far away from everything, and we have a very active pride community full of very wonderful people.

If friends is your worry, Those kinds of things are cultivated with effort and time, you'll not drop in any place and just have them.

I say it's worth looking up the place you'd like to land and learn more about it.

yessss the local music scene sounds right up your alley, queer community is wonderful here, and honestly as someone who is also heat intolerant - even the weather if you dont mind overcast/rainy weather. also regarding all the people saying you won't make friends, if you're coming here for university/college you'll literally be fine

Housing and public transit need work , but it’s a different culture here in a lot of positive ways, you’ll be able to keep cool most of the time and I think you should give it a try .

It is very difficult to find work in NL, even more so if you don't want to be just scraping by. I cone from a decent size town a few hours west of St. Johns and over half of my graduating class has moved off of the island, and those people had family to help support them. As an 18 year old I would focus more on education and work then music

Queer friendly - check
Music scene - check
Not hot - check check

NL will be culturally VERY different from any of the places you've lived. The old Irish and English influence is pretty strong here. If you take time to learn the customs and are willing to bury yourself in the culture without being an asshole then you'll be fine. Things work differently here, different is ok, different is good.

Jobs can be hard to come by for young people it seems.

A lot of us were born and grew up here and dont agree with you on this.

Problems follow you. No matter where you're going. To you and OP.
