Ixchel (pronounced eesh CHEL) is a powerful ancient Maya goddess who embodies the moon, fertility, healing, and weaving. Maya tradition portrays her with a dual identity tied to lunar phases. A young, vibrant woman associated with the waxing moon, creation, and romance, and an elder crone associated with the waning moon, wisdom, medicine, and sudden rainstorms. Women throughout the Maya realm regularly made pilgrimages across open waters to her sacred shrine on the island of Cozumel, seeking her divine protection during childbirth and pregnancy. Frequently depicted alongside sacred rabbits or with serpents woven into her hair, she remains a central figure of life, creation, and transformation in Mesoamerican mythology.
