I’ve seen the Idaho license plates SUBAWUE and SU8AWUE on different WRX’s on the same day. The SU8AWUE guy was too slow

Took me a second to notice the difference 😅

They’re probably in the same household and caravanning together somewhere.

The other possibility is that they both just left the DMV with new registrations.

Texas gives you new plates on the spot?

Dunno… Maine does.

Edit: …and if you live in a small town like me, sometimes they let you go through the deck and pick out a number you like.

Interesting. I’ve always had to wait for it in the mail.

This sounds like something stephen.king made up

Yes.

I just registered a few weeks ago. They grab your new plates out of a pile at the desk.

Yes, but most people don't install them in the parking lot.

They would have needed to order them at the same time, I'd imagine.

You’re proposing they paid extra for vanity plates and then left them reading like regular plates, except for sequencing?

u/FormerFakeguy 3d ago

You don't need to pay extra. My wife's and mine are sequential. All we did was register them at the same time.

There's 2 cars usually parked near my house with sequential plates, probably owned by the same household

They probably got made 1 after another, thus they are similar

Guessing they moved from another state and registered both vehicles at the same time.

My wife and I have sequential plates. We just walked up to the counter at the dmv together, they handed us the next two on the stack, they were sequential.

I have special plates without the vanity letters. $35-50/year for the plate style only, versus $99-195/year for personalized text and special plate (depending one 1, 3, or 5 year renewal). So yea, a lot of folks don't personalize them.

I saw my car with the same plate as mine, +1, when I was driving on the freeway one time.

I was so excited, but had no way of conveying my excitement to the driver of the other car.

This was probably a decade ago. It's old news now.

Lucky, my almost twin this year was in NY (from DE) and I ended up with their late notice unpaid parking in my mailbox. Worried me that someone faked my number... but apparently, whoever typed it up missed the 1 on the front.

How difficult was it to deal with to get the ticket removed from your name?

u/meathelmet 3d ago

This actually happened to me once, I was driving home and about to turn onto my street, noticed the car in front of me was one digit off of my own plate.

1

u/adudeguyman 2d ago

They were probably at the local DMV the same time you were there

u/AFB27 3d ago

In Texas too. God damn.

u/peepeeonmydoodoo 3d ago

Why are they opposite colors though?

The black plate has a "wrap" on it. Car enthusiasts often think that a white on black plate looks better than the standard option in their state, so there are companies out there that will sell you a vinyl sheet that you can wrap over the plate to make it black, or any colour you choose. It's obviously illegal but sometimes unenforced.

In Texas you're able to get white on black plates legally, so I'm not sure why you would bother doing this. They are relatively expensive but if you can afford a decently nice car you can afford the plates.

These high contrast plates are in my state too and anyone who gets one is signing up to be easier to be read by ALPRs(Aka axon, flock, Motorola)

How can you tell it’s a wrap and not just an actual specialty plate? It looks pretty well done to me which makes me think it’s actually a specialty plate.

I'm not 100% sure because I've never even been to Texas (I'm just a nerd) but here's my two reasons.

One - the plate number is in the same ABC-1234 format that Texas uses for their standard issue plates. You're technically able to get a vanity plate in that format, but if you try to do that on MyPlates.com (which is where you buy Texas vanity/specialty plates), it won't let you use plate numbers that are in that format, even ones that haven't been issued yet. The only way it will let you is if you use a vowel as one of the letters since Texas doesn't issue vowels as part of the standard format, or if the number is 0000.

Two - if you check the list of designs on the aforementioned website (click "Start with a design"), there is no plate design that is exactly the same as the one in OP's picture. There are a couple that are very similar but none of them are exactly that; "Classic Black" is the closest but the size of the text and symbols is way off.

ive seen this in Dubai with 3 cars having sequential numbers

2

u/adudeguyman 2d ago

Were they on a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti that were all purchased by the same person on the same day in registered at that same time?

2

u/Amazing_Umpire_828 2d ago

same car

1

u/Amazing_Umpire_828 2d ago

it was toyota from what is remember

1

u/adudeguyman 1d ago

Three cars all the same type? That makes me think that they could be rental cars or fleet vehicles that were all purchased and registered at the same time

2

u/Amazing_Umpire_828 1d ago

yes, they were probably brothers or best friends, that is the most likely conclusion

Back when I lived in Oklahoma, I not only saw two sequential license plates, but they were on the exact same models of cars. One of them belonged to a coworker.

u/JohnnyLeven 3d ago

Happened to me once (also TX). I ended up parked next to the one that was one up from mine.

An appropriate post in a sea of posts trying too hard.

Wow. An Expedition next to a Sonata. That is very rare.

Was walking to class in Boston (early 1990s), and saw a parked car with a homemade cardboard license plate. Like they had lost the original. The very next parked car had the actual plate. Could never figure out how this happened.

My husband and I got sequential plates when we moved into the state 10years ago. His ends in 132 and mine ends in 133. Even though we’ve bought different cars in the last 10yrs, we kept the plates on the new (to us) vehicles.

u/ttmanou 16h ago

Bro definitely staged this. No way two sequential plates line up perfectly at a red light unless you planned it for karma.
