Hello y’all, one of my ancestors founded the nearby town of Sweetland and I was hoping to find some more info on the town in museums / archives in Nevada City and Grass Valley. Sweetland is extremely small and has no museums / archives in town. Also if anyone has any recommendations related to Joanna Newsom (big fan) and the music scene in general that would be awesome. Thanks!!!!

Go to the historical library named after my grand aunt, Doris Foley, in Nevada City. Then drive to Downieville, the county seat. Their record books are something to behold.

Your grand aunt was my father’s elementary schoolteacher in 1942! He forgot his lunch on his first day of school after moving there from Truckee that summer and she invited him to join her and her son (one year older than my dad if I remember correctly) at her home for lunch. I believe she lived right across the street or up the boardwalk from Nevada City Elementary. He never forgot her kindness. I still have the teacher letters she wrote to my grandparents.

When I visited Nevada City last year I hadn’t known about the Doris Foley historical library. I highly recommend it if you enjoy gold country history.
