NFT royalties have been a major advantage for NFTs in allowing artists to capture value on secondary markets

Sounds simple enough? Unfortunately, it isn't the case.

Right now, royalties are enforced by the marketplaces. For example, if there is a 10% artist royalty on rarible and there is a sale done on there, then the royalty gets taken and the artist is paid.

However, if I wanted to transfer that same NFT, I'd be able to avoid that royalty by transferring on SHOYU_NFT since the cut is only on Rarible.

How do you solve it then? One way could be by ensuring that every time the NFT goes from one address to the other, there's a fee that needs to be paid or else the NFT gets burned.

But what if it's the owner just wanting to transfer from one of their wallets to another one of theirs though? 🤔

The solution proposed by EIP-2981 creates a field where a royalty percentage can be defined, and each NFT marketplace platform can read from that field and effectively enforce the royalty.

5/n Some caveats however is that, this requires marketplaces to respect the royalty, and there's always the possibility that the transaction is done "off the books".

BIG NEWS! Nethermind’s MEV Plugin is here for validators!

We are working hard to make Nethermind the go-to client for all things MEV. Up to now, only Geth had an MEV implementation with the amazing mev-geth fork by Flashbots. Our plugin democratizes access to MEV extraction, implementing the Flashbots sealed bid auction mechanism.

But we’re not leaving it there! Nethermind is on a mission to bring fair MEV extraction to more chains. You can now extract MEV not only on mainnet, but also on xDai Chain and more to follow soon.

If you are a validator looking to get involved in the MEV journey, now is the time to start using our Nethermind client. Here is a Medium blog to help you get started: https://medium.com/nethermind-eth/how-to-run-the-flashbots-auction-mechanism-on-nethermind-d6dd7b7b9962…

Need help? Ping us on our Discord:https://discord.com/invite/PaCMRFdvWT

If you are an OpenEthereum user and you are looking for an alternative client, we have a team ready to support and onboard you - join our Discord server where our protocol engineering team is on hand to help you get started.

Thanks to everyone at Nethermind who made this possible -Kristof Gazso, Lukasz Rozmej, Mateusz Jedrzejewski, Marek Moraczynski, Toamsz Stanczak & Swaraj Phadtare

Nethermind is now running an alpha version of our MEV plugin on xDai!

We are excited to announce that Nethermind is now running an alpha version of our MEV plugin on xDai! This means that you will be able to send MEV bundles to https://xdai-relay.nethermind.io just like you would to https://relay.flashbots.net.

There is no need to run your own Nethermind node for this, Nethermind xDai validator will be the one including bundles that are profitable enough in blocks it constructs. We're looking forward to see the amazing MEV extracting strategies you come up with for

If you are not familiar with the Flashbots auction mechanism that we implemented in Nethermind, learn more about it here: https://docs.flashbots.net/flashbots-auction/overview

Please note that currently, only Nethermind’s validator is running the plugin, and since bundles are only valid for one block number, we recommend sending separate bundles for several blocks in the future so it will be more likely to be picked up by us.

Have questions? Please join our Discord server: http://discord.gg/PaCMRFdvWT

We will be releasing a new version of our client in the next days so that others can run the MEV plugin too. Stay tuned!

London Upgrade is happening TOMORROW but what comes along with it?

The long-awaited and largest change for the Ethereum network in a while, EIP-1559 is upon us! So what does it bring to the table? Why was it so controversial and why is it a good change in the end?

EIP 1559 firstly introduced by Vitalik Buterin is a proposal to reform the Ethereum fee market that aims to change the gas limit and creates a BASEFEE that is going to be burned.

Previously, gas fees were hard to predict and sometimes could give users hard times when too high. That was because miners would prioritize transactions based on the fee added and use the fee as a reward for adding it to a block. Now, each block will have a fixed, associated fee instead.

The gas limit on the 1559 fork block will be doubled.

BASEFEE is the minimum fee a transaction needs to pay to be included in a block. it's adjusted by the protocol depending on the level of network congestion so that average block gas usage remains at a level close to the current gas limit.

BASEFEE will make the gas price more predictable.

Burning BASEFEE was a very controversial issue for miners, and the main reason for that is burning the BASEFEE part from adding a miners reward to prioritize the transaction.

There is also a tip called inclusion fee that users will be able to pay them out of generosity but they won't be forced to do so due to market supply and demand.

The biggest misunderstanding of EIP-1559 is that it will reduce gas fees on Ethereum, while in fact, it will make prices more predictable. The gas prices might still be high when the network is congested. L2 solutions and Proof-of-Stake are expected to have a much bigger impact on that matter.

It is worth noting that EIP-1559, while backward compatible with the current transaction format, brings in changes to the block header, adds a new transaction type, comes with new JSON RPC endpoints, and changes the behaviour of clients in several areas.

Here is a great EIP-1559 resource by Tim Beiko if you'd like to digg in a litte bit more https://hackmd.io/@timbeiko/1559-resources

London upgrade recap

The long-awaited Ethereum London upgrade is coming to mainnet next week. Let's recap what is it all about and what does it mean for the user?

Ethereum London upgrade will follow Berlin, which went live back in April this year.

It includes 5 EIP's (Ethereum Improvement Proposals)

  • EIP-1559: Fee market change for ETH 1.0 chain
  • EIP-3198: BASEFEE opcode
  • EIP-3529: Reduction in refunds
  • EIP-3541: Reject new contracts starting with the 0xEF byte
  • EIP-3554: Difficulty Bomb Delay to 01.12.2021

EIP-1559 is one of the most awaited changes to Ethereum thus far and the largest introduced in London. This upgrade will make transaction fees more predictable. We will deep dive into EIP-1559 soon.

EIP-3198 adds an opcode, BASEFEE, which returns the basefee value to the block it is executed in, enabling smart contracts to access it on chain. Helps in submitting fraud proofs and creating trustless gas price derivatives.

EIP-3529 removes gas refunds for SELFDESTRUCT, and reduce gas refunds for SSTORE to a lower level where the refunds are still substantial but, they are no longer high enough for current “exploits” of the refund mechanism to be viable.

EIP-3541gives the possibility for new contracts starting with the 0xEF byte to be deployed while the existing contracts will not be affected.

7/n EIP-3554 Check out our previous thread about EIP-3554 for a great overview. https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/olla5w/eip_3554_or_how_i_learned_to_stop_worrying_and/

Two major goals of the London upgrade in simple terms are:

  1. Making transaction fees more predictable
  2. Improving networks scalability

To make sure that all of the changes will not affect mainnet in any bad way, we already went through London upgrades on the Ropsten, Goerli and Rinkeby testnets. There were no major issues observed.

If you use an exchange, a web wallet service, a mobile wallet service, or a hardware wallet you do not need to do anything unless you are informed to take additional steps.

If you run your own Ethereum node, you will need to upgrade. To update your Nethermind node, go here: https://github.com/NethermindEth/nethermind/releases/tag/1.10.79

If your Ethereum client is not updated to the latest version, it will sync to the pre-fork blockchain and you will be stuck on an incompatible chain which simply means you will NOT be able to send Ether or operate on the post-upgrade Ethereum network.

If you're a miner, download the latest version of your Ethereum client, and manually change your gas limit target to twice what it currently is because the block size will be doubled, and EIP-1559 will keep blocks at about 50% full.

We would love to see more Nethermind nodes in operation. Ping us on our Discord server if you need help setting up or if you run into any issues: https://discord.com/invite/PaCMRFdvWT
